Really is a 50/50, the same case in old SpongeBob. But the problem is in the middle seasons with episodes like "Smooth Jazz in Bikini Bottom", "Cepalophod Lodge", and more.

In the episode "Slide Whistle Stooges" if you pause at the right moment when SpongeBob and Patrick are about to rush into Squidward's house you can spot an evil expression on their faces. It happens very quickly so you normally wouldn't notice it.

5:49 The thing about the Not Normal episode is the reason it gets to Spongebob is because Spongebob wants to fit in, and otherwise, he's unaware, but when he's told he isn't normal, it gets to him because of the desire to fit in, as stated in the pitch bible as part of his tragedy, that no matter what he does, he will never be normal and fit in like all the others. This episode seems directly based on the original pitch bible for Spongeboy Ahoy because of the premise, he's not normal but he wants to be normal and fit in. Spongebob is also autistic as well, and has been shown to miss social cues like when Plankton was mad about what his secret was in the episode "Sheldon Squarepants" like he wasn't 100% sure if Plankton was angry. I think Spongebob being autistic and missing social cues adds up with how Spongebob often times is around Squidward, like he's unable to pick up on Squidward being mad at him or finding him annoying. The thing about the Not Normal episode is that it strikes a cord within him specifically that bugs him, so when he's told he's not normal, it bothers him and gets him to try to change himself so he can fit in like the rest. EDIT: I thought you were gonna say Spongebob was intentionally torturing Squidward because he was aware of when Squidward told him that he isn't normal, but the fact you said he can't help it is correct, I think that's a part of Spongebob's autism, really, he wants to be friends with everyone and believes that he is, he's unable to pick up on social cues that he's annoying or pushing boundaries, but being told he isn't normal bothers him as per the Spongeboy Ahoy pitch bible.
