1. Reasonable pace 2. Be careful of new terrain 3. Eating/drinking - wait at least 3 hours before heavy meal, 1 hour before of snacking, watch nutrition, wary of caffeine, dairy, and maybe gluten. 4. Running shoes - stick with comfortable pair, but necessarily newest

Great points!. Definitely guilty of running too fast on easy runs. It happens to me many times that I head out on an easy run and fall into a half marathon pace. I find it sometimes a struggle to run slow.

My problem is I think I run slow, I'm nowhere near an intermediate runner, and according to my NRC, my average pace for 2K run (it's what I can do now) is 6'35", I'm not sure if it's right or wrong and my mind starts to wander and convince me to stop running. I've started watching GTN since the beginning of the year, and I appreciate all of your tips, and every day I am inspired by you, guys. Hopefully, you can do a video about what's a proper mindset or what do you think about when running or racing and how do you condition your mind? Thank you so much!! Much love and support from the Philippines xx

Caffeine has also diuretic effect, so besides forcing the number two, it will make you pee about an hour after you drink it. It’s better to skip it before the run.

Running with barefoot shoes helps in uneven terrain, if your the adventurous type these shoes really help with stability, but it can be tiring to get use to as your feet can get a work out, not for everyone

dont start your watch recording device for the first 5-10 mins the best way to make sure you dont blast off to fast and get a decent warm up. and never ever try to keep up with a fit 7 year old welsh collie

I am a man in his early 60's doing sub 20:30 5k's, sub 1:35 half's and a 3:37 marathon. I run with my wife of 40 plus years at least 3 times a week at her pace of around 7 mins per K pace and have used these runs as a good proportion of my easy runs in a week. Do you or any others think that these are having a negative effect on my progress as a runner as my wife and I love the fact that we can go out running together even at our advanced age.

Not a doctor; get actual medical advice from your doctor. Regarding running shoes, be sure to go with *neutral* ones. If you need a pronation or supination correction, best to get it from bespoke *running* orthopedic soles. Running with an bad correction can cause injuries that are not fun, like a crippling TFL inflammation on your knee. I suffered from one of those and what worked for me (again, not a doctor, this isn't a one size fit-all situation) was a good physio and running regularly with neutral shoes (no correcting soles anymore!), building duration and distance *very* gradually. I have been running three times a week since June (with very few mishaps), beginning with slow 20 minutes (10x2 even) and achieving hour long runs after a few weeks. If you told me a year ago that I now would be running 42km per week since March with a semi-marathon every Sunday, I simply wouldn't have believed you. This isn't a brag (well, not "just" a brag), but a testimony directed at people who, like myself a short year ago, are discouraged by an seemingly unending injury. Consult a doctor, get multiple opinions if you're uncertain! There, off my chest :)

Sooo... don't take well researched advice from a respected training outlet because they're not a doctor, but DO take advice from a comment from an anonymous commenter on said channel?? The irony.

@@Kelly_Ben haha the actual advice is "ask your doctor", I thought that was quite clear ;-)

@@Kelly_Ben oh yes, absolutely, this was just a point supporting Mark's on shoes. And the personal history was just something I would have loved to read that a year and a half ago when I was contemplating whether or not running was ever going to be in the cards for me again. TFL is quite a common injury, so I wrote that. Anyway, enjoy your second coffee :-)

Hi GTN, although i know you are a triathlon community, I'm here mainly for the running advice. During lockdown I ran 4 times per week, but since some of the restrictions are gone I've picked up my main sport again: tennis. I really want to keep running, but I'm strugling with how to combine the two. Currently I play tennis 2/3 times per week, and I want to run at least 2 times. Should these runs be more like tempo-style workouts or is it better to only do some easy running and incorporate speedwork in the tennis sessions? Any thoughts on this would be great!
