Thank you Heather for asking the elephant in the room question RE women, periods, and training! He seemed a bit sheepish when asked, and he shouldn't! Hoping the taboo around women and their cycles will dissipate, and GTN is helping to dispel the discomfort around this topic.

Just wanted to add the same!!! There is such a taboo around this topic, but it affects 50% of the triathletes 💪🏼

Agreed. It’s so ridiculous. We’re half the population!

To me, he doesn't seem embarrassed at all by the question. He and Laura are among the few people who talk very openly about the subject. Laura has several videos on the topic on her KZbin channel. That's a great message.

I think Philipp just couldn't express himself very well in English on this topic. He and Laura started perioid-based training years ago and talked about it very openly when most people didn't even have it on their radar. At least in German-speaking countries, they are more or less pioneers in removing these taboos

Just checked out Laura's channel. So so grateful for her putting out content on menstruation and women in sport. Lots of active women have irregular or non existent cycles bur this is not healthy or normal, and adequate nutrition and recovery can usually correct this.

Heather was polite calling him out on the heel thing.

Great video! Really enjoyed it! I have a question for #gtncoachescorner I am training for Challenge Roth in July 2024. In January I will be abroad for 3 weeks and cannot take my bike with me or rent a bike. What can I do to maintain my bike fitness as much as possible? Bike specific strength workouts? More running? Spinning class? Or just continue my swimming and run training as planned and pick up cycling when I am back home?

#gtncoachescorner I'm curious about a running thing, how do you train when you're not training specifically for a race? What is your maintenance that you would suggest for mileage per week, and are you still doing consistent speed work in between race blocks? Approaching the winter now and I don't have any planned races until April (my 3rd half marathon) and I think I might do my first full marathon later next year. Thanks for all the wonderful information you provide!

On heel striking, I think what he’s getting at is longevity of performance.

#gtncoachescorner I have been finding that on my long runs afterwards my forearms ache as if I’ve done a gym grip workout. Is this normal? I don’t hold anything while I run.

I totally agree about the super shoes. I totally knackered my knees by running in them with weak hips. Lesson learned but too late for my knees. Boo.

Thank you- great coach, more inspiring than I thought it would be. And you know Heather- I am a heal striker, thought I washed it away but I checked the picture in FinisherPix from Kona , still heal striking. I believe him - it will be one of my goals, improve my running not just to be faster but not to hurt my body. Last season I got orthopedic insoles and it became better. At least I don’t destroy my shoes so quickly. But have to work on my technique. Best regards Marie-Louise

Brilliant! Thank you for asking about the menstrual cycle and it’s influence on training. Let’s talk about this more! So much to learn and gains to be made. 👍

The video of ryf on the heel is down hill on the flats she is not a heel striker and lastly it isn’t a photo of you heel angle as some pull there toes up it is more important of foot relation to knee position and hips a bent knee with a heel landing will not stay on that heel long , a locked knee with a heel landing will stay on that heel longer and that by definition is deceleration which is not good
