After this Video I bought my 3000GT (GTO) and don't regret it. The GTO is perfect and handels amazing well even with its heavy weight.

@Southern Fun As an owner of a VR4. You're mistaken and sound like 90% of people who have exposed to misinformation of the 3/S platform, Problem with buying used VR4's is most of the owners never took care of them. Most common issue is improper timing belt service, the 6G72 motor is an interference motor which means if you don't be a proper owner and properly do the 70k timing belt service you will have a destroyed motor. The non-turbo automatics had terrible transmissions and pitiful performance values and mainly meant to be a touring car not a sports car. Also the first year of these cars had 2 Bolt motors which in 1992 onward they switched to 4 bolt motors. They're strong, powerful, and reliable cars. Biggest issue is first time buyers not knowing the issues of buying a 100K+ miles one.

@Southern Fun Wrong information. I own the 3000GT since 2016 and only did maintenance. The engine is bulletproof. I bought a 2nd Gen 1997 with Getrag 6 Speed Gearbox. Gearbox is fine and better than the old 1st Gen 5 Speed Gearbox. Did a 3000km Roadtrip to italy and back without problems. Better buy a well maintained car and you will have fun. timing belt service and water pump is the most expensive maintenance and its still quite cheap compared to other cars. I use 10x18" wheels and 265 Federal RSR Tyres. Car handles really well and I outrun most sportscars on tight corners at the Track due to the All Wheel Steering. I loose in fast harpin corners due to the weight. but really tight corners the 3000GT is awesome. Breaks are too tiny in these cars so if you drive crazy you need to upgrade to K Sport Breaks or Brembos. You can use Porsche Cayenne Brembo Brakes at these cars or Evo X Brembos.
Under appreciated than underrated I would say. The GTO or 3000GT (depends on market places), are pretty capable cars, but kinda too much heavy. It's a GT car, not a sport car, this why the chassis is not made to take corner that fast.

The GTO TT / GTO MR / 3000GT VR-4 was an extremely fast car, even in 2018. I have a 1994 3000GT VR4, I ran a 13.08 @ 104.1mph. These cars do 0 to 60 in 4.5s to 4.7s and the 1/4m in 12.7s to 13.3s depending on trim level

Dude a R32 skyline need less than 13 sec in the same exercise. They were using reverse starting pole positions back then. Put the GTR and Supra in their legitimate pole positions, and the GTO would be far behind.

Without to forgot the reverse pole position, which means the Supra and GTR were faster than the GTO, and the TA and recorded best laps times belong to the Supra ! So what's your point about the GTO after that ? Everybody watching this show correctly, knows how to understand the rules of these battles ! The winner is by this fact, not always the one who truly deserve to win ! Ok ?! Got it now ?!

It has incredible grip. It wasn't made to drag or drift and was really engineered for cornering. All wheel drive and 4 wheel steering makes it an awesome track car.

Supra, GTO, Skylines are meant to be fast since they were at their design phase but notice the 1JZ-GTE Chaser guys, being a huge four door comfortable sedan and having all the amenities of a luxury vehicle, it can still keep up with these beasts. Toyota didn't have to cut holes in the carpets and other body panels to make that car go fast. Now thats amazing.

As much as I've always loved the supra's performance and incredibly buildable engine, I've never liked the looks of it. Reminds me of an upside down bathtub..too rounded. It wasn’t meant to be. So I’m sorry if it came off like that. Secondly, looks are, obviously, 100% subjective, so there truly is no serious debate intended from me on the subject. That being said, as much of a Toyota fan as I am (9 Celicas ranging from a 1977 GT Hatch up to a 1999 GT-T Hatch, 1MKII Celica/Supra, 2 Lexus LS and my current MKII MR2 Turbo), the Supra was never my favorite Toyota in looks or engine. I’m much more of a 3S-GTE/ST-205 WRC fanboy. What is your opinion of the 1994 Celica GT4 WRC and it’s appearance? I have, previously, built one for myself by swapping a USDM ST-204 with all the parts from front and rear cuts from Japan. To me it is aesthetically the most beautiful car ever designed with the full OEM TRD/WRC bodykit (Spoiler risers, front spoiler, front and rear splitters and side skirts). Mine is finished in Acura RSX Nighthawk Black Pearl. To me, it looks like a better version of the MKIV Supra TT.

@@negativeindustrial no worries Neg Ative, many posts I've authored could be misconstrued as well. Seems as though we have much in common as far as past car ownership goes. My first car was 82 celica gt, second a 86 gts, third a 87 supra, and fourth a 91 supra turbo. I'm obviously a big toyota fan. To be honest, I wasn't big on the styling of fourth generation celica's, for similar reasons as the supra's of the same era. Just personally didn't like how rounded their lines were. But you said it the best, styling is 100% subjective. I realize more people than not really dig the looks of those so I'm definitely in the minority.

GTO MR here, so no technologies, they dropped almost all techs for lightweight purposes and performances. A normal GTO is more heavier than this special version.

Looked like an even race to me. The GTO will always get going faster with AWD. It was built primarily for handling/stability in all road conditions and mountain passes in winter weather.

@@SegaSaturn94 just because it's bigger doesn't always mean it's just slower since the reason it's got all that weight is from the AWD, Electronic Controlled Suspension, Active Aero, which combined took a lot of time to produce and of course does weight it down, but it makes up for it because it's not just unsprung weight from like radios or shit like that, since it actually helps the car with stability and control overall.. Plus, in another Best Motoring drag video, I've seen the Puma version of this car get a 11.4 @ 251km/h in the drag race portion compared to the Super Taikyu Skyline R33 GT-R's 11.6 @ 250km/h even though the Skyline had almost double the power of 450hp - 500hp, where the 3000GT was at only 330HP and still beat it and got a slightly higher top speed out of it! 3000GT's are no joke, that's why I'm buying one in the future

The GTO is not a sport car, and far to be the best car ever made. GTO got many problems, not very reliable for a Japanese car sadly ! This is a GT car, but the Supra do a better job as a GT car and just need a bit more boost with a more dynamic ECU program.

I give props to the Supra for catching up (even though it was only one "lane" behind the GTO at the start) and I'm pretty sure that the Supra would of passed the GTO given a few laps more but I give major props for the GTO because it was never designed with a race car mentality. Its a highway cruiser. With its long gearing, unpleasant understeering, faint steering feel, and weight (heaviest out of all of them) I'd say the GTO held its own. Major props to the driver too. Don't get me wrong, I love Supras too but "winning is winning. Edit: haha wth you're commenting all over about the same thing. Chilllll. Don't get butthurt about it lol. People get your point :P.

Christ the GTO is fast. I'm looking to get this garaged example that hasn't really been driven since 1998. It runs great and is a stage IV tune with only 113k miles. It's all HKS from the 90s though. It's also a stealth so probably gonna want some exterior mods to make it a little more appealing to my tastes. I hope I'll be able to figure out that outdated stuff.

Even Supra has fastest lap, GTO still won the race. It is not time attack. Win is win. All of those cars are classic JDM super cars in 90’s. Any one of them can to win. It just depends on the driver and lineup.

I'm buying a VR4 as my first car! If I don't get the VR4 specifically, I don't care, I'm still gonna forge either the NA DOHC or SOHC and turbo it regardless even if it is FWD! These cars are amazing

Id highly recommend staying away from automatics, if you do buy a VR4 immediately swap the timing belt, tensioner, waterpump, etc!!!

I have owned both the Supra and the 3000gt and I love both cars but best bang for buck when modding the car's engine is the Supra. The 2JZ engine mods are cheaper and easier to install with better results too. Both are really fun to drive and both sound great.

people keep saying that a supra would outrun a 3000gt on a straightline just look at the video where the GTO(NOT EVEN AN MR) and SUPRA where both on a straight line the GTO just keeps pulling away from the supra. the supra may have a higher topspeed but it does not guarranty that it would have an easy time passing the GTO at the top end, its still the acceleration that counts and that's where the GTO has an advantage by reaching speeds at a quicker pace. it was proven on one of the video where the supra was pitted against an RX-7 and a SUPRA posted the highest top speed at the same time AN RX-7 with a lower TOP SPEED than a GTO and SUPRA but on a long stretch of straight road the SUPRA was left behind by the RX-7 because of faster acceleration. more so if mitsubishi came out with a GTO MR RS version that would have been faster just like what they did to the EVOLUTION MR RS.

GTO is just too quick for the supra. Every time the supra gets close, the gto just accelerates faster out of the corners.

It depends: the stock boost on 91-93 is 9psi; then Mitsubishi turned the boost on 94-99 up to 12psi. All stock GTO's [91-99] can handle 15psi max before mods are needed).

This is quite the old comment, but I just wanted to clarify something. 15psi is the limit, but only for the turbos, not the engine. At 15psi, the turbos get extremely hot, making it the safe heat limit of the car. My boost controller has hit 15psi peak in the past, but you shouldn't exceed that. Feels like the ride of your life haha. I love my 93 VR4

Funny that, I see more 3000GTs then Supras and RX-7s of any year. Of the three, the 3000GT had the shortest production life, yet I see more of them than either of the others still on the street. The gearboxes weren't the problem - the contract between Mitsubishi and Getrag was - Mitsubishi was contractually forbidden from doing anything other than drain/fill or replacements until a few years ago. Now that they can be repaired, all those breaking transmissions don't break so much. Funny that.

The brakes may have faded to allow the supra to catch but it look 5 laps,I found so many options to upgrade,discs are now slotted ,heaps better ,no fade ,plemum and throttle body spacer from evil performance uk and fuel rail cross over tube upgrade yes to SA

Tsukuba is tailored to suit FR cars which is why the Supra managed to keep up. Plus the GTO is a lot heavier so it couldn't carry as much speed through the corners and the brakes faded quicker. Good race still!! Shocked that the GTR didn't pull through
Looks like having all-wheel drive and steering gave the GTO a slight advantage over the supra on this particular track. Which is surprising considering how much it weighs. A LOT is dependant on the driver as well. I miss the days when these japanese auto manufacturers we're creating performance driven sports cars with bold styling. So tame and meh now, trying to appeal to the masses.

AWD separates the GTO(3000GT VR4) from the rest. My 91 stock VR4 can beat most cars on the street simply because I have AWD twin turbo. Anyone that wants to beat a VR4 better have something really nice w/work done to it. But then again, if they run into a suped-up VR4, they will be in a whole lot of trouble.

Even though it never passed it, the Supra was eating up the GTO, and posting faster lap times. The only place the GTO would put distance between them was on the back straight, and then the Supra would be back on his bumper. Awesome video!

97gto .I found all the boost lines had plugs in them .i removed them ,gave me 2 pounds more boost .I did exhaust and k&n filter ,and can say ,this is the best car i will ever own.Ps I worked at mitsubishi in south australia for 13 years and hate mitsubishi ,but I still own one of these.

Mitsubishi usually had better performance when compare in standard condition, some still can compete even in heavy modification. Realy wonder if Mitsubishi make a sport cars with longitudinal engine configuration.... Mitsubishi problem on race track mostly understeer, may be it caused by transverse engine....

They are all stock, its that the GTO was made to do everything while the others weren't hence the Gran Tourer Class, I was made to do everything well, not be the best sprint, 1/4 mile drag or the likeit's good at everything and when you can do that, even if the other car is faster, you simply out perform them

The 3000gt has much more low end power than any of those cars from that era, plus awd. Tiny tiny little turbos, td04 9Bs. The supra can out brake it though and is a tad faster on the top end with its large turbos. Very nice race.

The vr4 and spyders are rare not the SL and base model 3000gt's that every one has i own 2 vr4's and i want a spyder next they go used for same price as a new car today very rare indeed

thats not an MR its only a GTO twin turbo, the wheels on the MR are different from the regular GTO and the GTO on this video has the stock design.
I have 3000gt and it looks and feels weird seeing it mirrored. But then again mine is American version.

coming out of the hole and on the straights the supra is no match for the GTO only in the corners

This pretty the opposite in fact ! Should use your brain 🧠 a bit more ! The Supra being better at corners, means it is faster then. The weak point of the Supra is its ECU programming, which was made for cruising around, not to beat others on accelerations ! Just reprogramming a Supra without changing any parts, and you will beat easily the GTO.

@lllpulsell Theres definitely an r32 gtr in there which has a rb26dett with the same "gentlemans agreement" 280bhp as the (JDM) supra and GTO,think the other skylines were r33 gtst with rb25det comparable to the 1jz gte in the mark 2, and an r32 gtst spec M with an rb20det, correct me if im wrong. Supra was held up by the GTO in the last half of the race

@jmcton It lost plenty of time at the start of the race because it isn't better stock. Don't agree with me? Click play again and tell me who was in first place and who the first loser was, maybe I forgot. ;)
stock Supra is better, was blocked and lost plenty of time to GTO at the start of the race, just look at the times, one or 2 laps more and the GTO was over 1´07"57, anyway think all this cars are great!!!
