Platoon Sergeant Mitchell Paige served in the 2nd battalion, 7th marines of the 1st marine division during the Guadalcanal campaign. During the battle for Henderson field when the Japanese broke through the main line directly in front of his position, Paige commanded his machine gun section fearlessly. He continued to fire upon the enemy until all his men were killed or wounded and alone against a hail of Japanese shells kept manning his gun until it was destroyed upon which he took over another, moving from machine gun to machine gun. He never ceased firing upon the enemy until reinforcements arrived.
Paige and the others formed a new line and led an aggressive bayonet charge, driving the enemy back and prevented a enemy break through. Platoon Sergeant Paige operated four machine guns, singlehandedly stopping an entire Japanese regiment.
Platoon Sergeant Mitchell Paige received the Medal of Honor on October 26. He would later publish a book in 1975 titled "A Marine named Mitch" and spent his later years working to identify imposters wearing or selling the Medal of Honor.
