BJJ Guard Retention - Uki Waza Counter to Bullfight Pass: the "toreando" is one of the most effective open guard passes in all of jiu-jitsu, so it's essential to have a few answers if you want to retain your guard. In this series, we've used the cross-collar grip plus a stiff arm to regulate distance with a standing partner. Now we use this grip proactively, not just to retain the guard but to go on the offensive with a powerful sweep - uki waza.
In judo, uki-waza is a sacrifice throw where tori commits their own body to the ground in order to throw uke. Since we're already on the ground, the jiu-jitsu work for uki-waza is done with a shorter level change from a kneeling position, a commitment to a cross-collar pull and a blocking foot.
