Tenacity of tourists, we're on holiday, so we WILL holiday, so there!!!! Blues and Royals riders look drenched and fed up nothing worse than wet woolen uniforms. Horses look miserable, with forelock stuck to the head. Yuck.

John, my husband is a Veteran Welsh Guard. He worked all the major Palaces and The Tower of London. I just wanted to point out, if you weren't aware about why the Guards walk their post. It's partly part of the job to patrol but also to stretch they're legs. My Husband spent 2 hours shifts on and to stand for 2 hours solid is impossible. So when they're feet would start to go numb they would walk it off. But to patrol they're designated post is part of what they have to do it's to also keep the blood flowing and stretch the leg muscles.

Unfortunately I went out today after getting up at 5am and ended up in excruciating pain with Planta Fasciitis. Already disabled it just made it worse. Walking around these large grounds in the pouring rain and getting soaked miles from the house shops and coffee lounge. I eventually got to the very large Garden Centre trying to buy plants for my garden. I did sit down around 9:30 but that made my foot worse. I have been growing vegetables in my garden for over 24 years but this year I have given it up so planting flowers and shrubs in the place the veg used to grow. It’s just me now and at the end of the day I gave nearly all the vegetables away to neighbours family and friends. However when I got in doors it was lovely to have a hot shower and lie down. Which is when I thought of those poor troopers sitting out in the rain and getting cold. They can’t decide oh I am just going to have a lie down when they bring the horses in knowing they have to go back out in an hour. Gosh they must be so fit, admittedly they are mostly in twenties and I am seventy but I do admire our troops. I don’t think even in my twenties I was fit so in awe of them all. So Proud to be British 🇬🇧

John I feel for the Blues &Royals getting soaked! We were on parade and waiting to be inspected by Princess Margaret and it had been raining all night. The parade ground looked like a swimming pool. She turned up late and we were dripping. She complained that our boots were splashed and looked muddy!! She then asked my mate Tom who was standing next to me how long he had been there? His reply ….since half past f**king six!! He got marched off to the guardroom!!!

Well that makes a change - pouring down in London while it’s bright, sunny-ish and a few degrees above perishing here. But we are over 500 feet above sea level so it doesn’t usually happen that way. I don’t envy the Blues & Royals who will be standing guard in damp jackets. Can I ask John, for the sake of animal welfare, if you’d be careful what you say. Your comment about life sized contraceptives almost had me spluttering my coffee over the cat. Unlike Queen Victoria, who was frequently amused, she wouldn’t have been.

@@susanbarry8722 my dad taught me that it takes more than sitting in the saddle to be able to ride a horse. You have to create a bond of mutual trust and respect and you can’t do that unless you know what make a horse tick. It will tell you how it feels, if there’s a problem or if it’s unsettled if you learn to read the signs. It starts with a “horsey handshake” - letting it get to know you by sniffing the back of your hand then gradually building up trust - always at the horse’s pace. The way my dad put it is that the horse has to trust you enough to give its permission for you to ride it. Cos if a horse doesn’t trust you you won’t stay in the saddle for long - it will turf you off. I don’t ride anymore either - but I still get my horsey fix by helping my niece out at the livery stables & riding school she now runs. It still gives me a buzz when a horse recognises me and gives me a welcome nicker.

@@jackychamber534 it would have cost me quite a few treats to be forgiven. She quite elderly and likes to maintain her dignity. The last time I “offended” was when I took her to the vets. She stomped off upstairs when we got home but she came down a bit later, stood in front of me, tail up and pointing at me. She meowed to get my attention then, when I spoke to her, she hissed at me and stomped off again. That was me told.

I think it also depends on whether they're saddled up and how wet their underblankets and leathers are! We've had horses who didn't mind the rain when they weren't working but certainly were edgy when they were wearing tack in the rain. It's also a pain having to clean wet leather.

But no, here we are, in rain, wind, and sunshine, we got our video, explain things in a friendly and funny mood, and even some jokes. 🙂 Thank you so much. 👍 Here is a thought from me: well, there maybe a lot of rainy days in this beautiful land, in UK, but anyway, the humour is very dry. I appreciate your steady commentary on what is happening around you. Could you ever interview a Guard on what kind of education they receive on dealing with tourists? Then the signs on the boxes - could they be in different languages ? Would that help with not touching the reins? But some are going to try and touch the reins no matter what. People want to crowd in with no idea that these huge animals have feelings and fears and dislikes and just plain - "leave me alone"! Alot is being asked of these horses. Bless the people who train and love and work and understand them. One last thing - the doors and wood trim in boxes need painting. OK - I will stop bugging you now. Thanks

Good Morning John trade you for your rain , here in Oklahoma under Tornado threats tonight ,and through the night . We have that to look forward to the next 2 to 3 months ,plus we have some small earthquakes always to enjoy😅, naught 😅. I finally got to see your full face, you look like you are between my two oldest Daughters age , still Young . OH just seen how old you said you were, my I am surprised, your 2 years older than I am. All that walking has kept you Young and Pray Healthy. Hope you enjoyed your rainy day.❤

Naughty John to tell a fib about how old you were. No wonder you look in your 50s .I was right when I said you looked like you were my older two girls age. Also why you can move faster then any of the others. You are a nice-looking young man to. You have such a funny additude, but love also your serious side when it comes to Horse Guards

Those poor buggars, I hope someone will bring over a change of clothing so they can be dry and warm. Maybe they sent their tunics over separately to keep them dry. You stay dry and warm as well, John. We got rain here in southeast Queensland Australia, and we normally don't have wet weather in May.

I was a Wren..paid 24/7...that's how they get out of overtime etc. when I was at Whitehall as a young Wren we could work up to 60 a week hours in various watches. No such thing as public holidays double pay...

The rain pouring down looks very much like where I live, the northwest coast of the USA in the state of Washington. This state is well known for our rain but one benefit of the rain is the lush greenery we have around us. That is where we get our nickname as The Evergreen State. Just a little bit of trivia for your audience. Our weather like yours can get quite hot in summer, but thankfully not for long periods of time.

Can I share a little story with you? Pre-war my dad was in a dance band which went around a lot of the villages in Somerset. One of the guys worked for Fyfes Bananas and they used his van to go around the venues. The van had a huge banana on the top and they notoriously became known as the Banana Gang!! 🍌😆

John, I my younger days we used the word CHIT to refer to a (document/certificate/ticket etc) which gave permission to gain entry/be there, so maybe CHIT(S)MAN refers to the guard responsible for checking such documentation, just a thought from history, a bit like a 'tallyman' checking the correct number of items being loaded unloaded from a day etc.
