Guard Sword And Shield Build Fast Access to Shield combo! Monster Hunter Now SnS style

My second build, this one is about how good guard 3 is in the game, thing you can't know without some massive investment of money and time collecting the pieces and upgrading to rarity 6.
Guard 3 allows to trivialize some monsters in this game plus allows you to quickly go into the stronger part of the sword and shield combo without needing to time a perfect roll or getting hit if you miss it.

It’s funny that you made this set. My first sns build used barroth chest and arms so I could try out offensive guard. I don’t have the mats to upgrade the pieces so I had to switch to evade like Niantic wants. Haha. Can’t wait till lance and gunlance make it to the game!!

as a GL and CB player guard and counter is my main play style. i came up with the same strat as you as i know the others weapons will drop in the game later i was preparing for them using SnS.

How viable is the damage against 8* and above monsters? Can we finish it before the timer ends?

So I run a fire,water,thunder, and ice element build. I heavily focus on my dodging, evade extender 3 artful dodger 1 with tobi chest and gloves. Critical eye 3, a lock on from kululu head and pants. I also sub in any element damage boost that applies to waist or pants. Not interfereing with my mobility. This varies due to different armor skills. My weapons are all at rank 6, pushing high dps and mobility. In fact, I never once use the shield, for you can take serious damage if your armor stat is low. We all know how detrimental it can be to get hit even once. Also, now that my evade extender is 3, I'm working on putting weakness exploit level 2 in all my builds. Losing only 1 evade extender. With 25% affinity from weakness exploit and 20% from kululu gear, I'll be at a 45% affinity with as much element attack and mobility possible for each element. Thoughts?

I was thinking about building into this. I imagine guard 5 will make it even better, but thise extra guard pieces will need other good skills to make it worth it

It does stack and is way more effective at 3.

Do you have the list of monster attacks that don't work against guard? I see here the Pukei tongue but what about the others?

Does focus skill speed up the charge time of SnS Lv2 charge attack? In the main mh title, there is no Lv2 charge, so I'm interested to know.

I can test. But the best is to use a perfect evade for instant charge.

Is this build feasible against the wyverns too? Rathian, Rathalos or even Diablos? Up to which attacks can it block and which ones can't? Even smallers too, like the Tobi's electrified tail sweeps or the Paolumu's. Appreciate the inisghts!

You can small guard everything from rathian but the flash kick tail and the big fireball. From rathalos you only can small guard the tail whip, the bite and fireball if you are close. diablos you basically only can guard the hip check and even if you could, the charge attacks put it too far to counter, guarding sucks against this monster the most. for palu, the things you can't guard is the slow big slam while flying and the rock toss. The rock toss is avoiable if you are close, and the big slam is a free helmbreaker combo.

I was gonna make baroth stuff for gunlance but im expecting a new guard monster to be out or maybe even an artillery set to be added like brachy by the time gunlance is out so im not sure

Do you know if resentment from the black diablos armor activates when blocking with sns? Because you take a bit of damage when blocking

Sadly I was unable to craft any piece to test it. You only take chip damage you you get the big pushback.

What I have been told is that is hard to activate, I don't use it because I'm always poor and can't upgrade an armor with it.

If you pair guard with resentment would it gain enough DPS over say Crit or Elemental builds?

how does guard work does it. do you have to have high def to not take damage? or do you just take no damage. how that scale with stronger monster like rathalos. can you guard against fire and legiona ice?

In MH every single monster attack has a kind of "force" parameter. That value is compared with your weapon guard value, if the value is superior, then you get no pushback at all and no damage regardless your defense. If is a little lower, then you get a % of the damage of the attack and is a lot lower then you get more damage. I don't have the current now numbers. In short, guard 3 makes lots of attacks have the small knock back, so you take no damage and can follow up with the spin attack into shield combo like if were a perfect evade.

How much damage can you kill the monsters within the time limit?? Because many prefer to build full damage

by how the game works, every time you upgrade your weapon your damage raises by 40-60 that is more or less what a skill gives you so this is just like being two upgrades behind. I haven't got any problem so far at 7*, once I get to 8* I can already overgrade my pukei and jagras weapons.

Divine blessing can get activated when you get the medium pushback. but since this build requires two pieces dedicated to guard I recommend investing the rest in offense.

after I block I always do the jumping attack. How do you do the shieldbash instead?

When you get the small knockback you will do the other combo. With the guard skill you get the small one on more attacks and get less damaged on the other one.

2 is a lot more restrictive on what you can guard with the small pushback. You need 3 for the roars for example.

Sorry the delay. I unlocked 8* yesterday. I can beat a great girros with a setup of 45% affinity, guard 3 and guard 3 with a 7 5/5.

Don't want to pop your bubble, but this playstyle gets useless with 8 stars and up, the monsters have super huge health pools and u take so much dmg even while blocking that you simply cant play like this, also element 4 or more is mandatory for 8 stars onward to kill the monsters.

You take 0 damage on small block regardless of the strength of the attack, is the whole point of the build. About the other part I would have to confirm it. I have pukei sns ready for rarity 8 as soon as I get the materials. If I can kill the usual suspects of jaggras, pukei and kulu with it, then I can upgrade the weapon enough to face other monsters. With pukei 7 5/5 these 7* monsters give me zero problems right now, I have even killed stuff like anjah 7* with this. I would deny I might need more damage to get through diablos since I have no good ice sns. The weak knockback is an indirect damage buff since the shield combo is like x3 or x4 as strong as the sword part that only use is to reach the shield part.

When you try to block an attack with sns normally without any guard you almost always will get a larger knockback when guarding. After the large one if you attack, you will do the helm breaker combo. You also get some bleed through damage. The small one is when you block an attack with enough guard and you get a much little pushback that can be followed with the roundhouse slash and no bleed through so is a lot better.

@@huzdahuz NGL guard is only worth at 3 because otherwise no much attacks will get the small one. Do a regular build and once you can do rarity 6 armors consider it.

Guard 3 works for the bite and the no charging air attacks. You get the medium push in the roar sadly.
