There have been several runs of Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie is mostly based off of a version that debuted in comics in 2008. But the original team with the Guardians name debuted in 1969 and was from the far future. The comic has always dealt with crazy sci-fi ideas and is deeply embedded in Marvel Comics history. This week I take a look at Jim Valentino's run on the comic back in 1990.

The Guardians of the Galaxy was the only comic book I ever had a mail subscription to. It and Fantastic Four were my favorite books, but Guardians had space and aliens in every issue! I have a sweet spot in my heart for the original teams run in the 70's and 90's, and have collected nearly all their appearances. It was a joy to watch this. My wife even joined me and we followed along with my copy. Thank you!

Yes... Doctor Strange was in Ancient One in the 2nd era of Guardians of the Galaxy. I've collected both eras. It was a great series! In the 2nd series they touched on a planet of mutants. The mutants left Earth and established their own civilization in which Wolverine was the informal leader for generations. Peter Parker left Earth with the mutants. It's a good story line that should be pursued.

Also, the Inhumans did the very same thing. That's where they found Talon, their Inhuman member close to the end of their run. I somehow remember the 90's GotG going past issue 100, maybe all the way to #125. Maybe Valentino carried it to issue 60. I haven't had the time to dive into my long boxes for quite a while. Then there was the spin-off series where Martinex split the team to be more effective & protect more of the universe called the Galactic Guardians, which ran 12 issues alongside the main Guardians book..

Growing up in the middle of nowhere in rural Illinois, there was never anywhere were I could really buy comic books (to this day I have no idea where to find a comic shop anywhere near my town), so for me, my real introduction to the Marvel Comics was at an antique shop a few towns away, where they had a bunch of the early and mid-90's comics like this version of Guardians of the Galaxy, some of the non-Spiderman 2099 stuff and a lot of the bad 90's stuff that everyone makes fun of today. I remember going there once every couple months as a kid and just trying to absorb as much of those comics as I could in the short amount of time we'd spend there. These days I understand that in retrospect the majority of these comics weren't actually all that good (with some notable exceptions such as Guardians of the Galaxy and - no joke - Sleepwalker), but I still have a lot of good memories about them and they still mean a lot to me. Anyway, thanks for making this review!

Fast-forward to 2019 - We did get to see a "kinda 90's GotG" in one of GotG's post-credit scenes. Except Sly Stallone was Starhawk. There was Aleta, Martinex, Charlie-27, Nikki, and Krugarr (the alien wormlike sorcerer supreme). Would've been better without Stallone, but hey, maybe Stallone is a big GotG fan. If so, then that's OK.

I read my first Guardians of the galaxy story in Marvel Two in One issue 4 or 5 it was in 1976, it was a fun read, great to see these colorful characters next to my all time favorite marvel hero The Thing. I later found marvel presents where the Guardians ran from issue 3 to issue 12 (I think). after that they just disappeared, except for very, very few appearances in books like the Avengers, Thor and Marvel Two in One. till like 1989 or 1990 , the series he is reviewing now. all fun stuff. I still have a tough time excepting this new team ( starlord, groot, rocket, drax, and gamora) as the true Guardians. but still fun stuff.

If I remember correctly the Guardians were seeking caps shield out in space. And later down the line, it was going to be revealed that it was the hulk that threw Captain America's shield into space at the end of Future Imperfect and that was supposed to be a maestro / Guardians / Hulk crossover type thing that never happened. If my timeline is correct the Guardians were released in 90, and future Imperfect was in 92 I believe. I may be wrong on the dates

We havent even seen any powers they might have. Martinex and Charlie-27 were certainly inspired by the original characters, they even included Krugarr the alien sorcerer which was fun. I really loved that series. It went on for years. They did go into all sorts of neat sci-fi territory as much as try to re-vamp and continue a 70s property when modern Marvel comics started to appreciate all the 70s stuff it did - stuff it now rests and chews up and regurgitates now IMO. Just to know the explorer wasn't greeted as a hero. He was greeted with laughter...! Here he is landing and almost got shot down as a meteor or some kind of attacking object - in an ancient, archaic space-ship. The government had changed dozens of time and the records lost - remember the War of the Worlds/Killraven universe they put the same into - ? So he'd found an Alpha Centauri that had been colonized - they did deal with issues like native displacement - Alpha Centaurians were increasingly losing land to colonizers and since their culture required a life of rituals and nature were unable to succeed in human society. So the explorer was immortal in his suit, but his space craft was junk and hauled away - maybe he sold it as scrap (paying fines for unauth'd landings, etc.) so he might have $ for a ticket home to an earth as changed. To keep himself from going nuts he just tried to complete his mission of cataloging the Flora and Fauna of Alpha Centauri - he met Yondu who attacked him (later retcon in the story) but didn't report it earlier since Yondu would have been killed. Once Yondu became aware he was as lost his hatred for humanity subsided and he became his friend - later the Badoon invasion surpassed that issue. Another cool thing was they met a future (to them the past) Thor and ended up changing their future... Almost costing him his life - suddenly there was a material that could pierce Adamantium, called "Dargonite" after Dargo - the future human "Thor" - whoops he'd tried to hack "Uru" and while he couldn't synthesize that he did come close. They saved the future/past Thor - but he lived and to make some $ later in his life and out of curiosity made a material and suddenly Major Victory has to worry about projectile weapons while earlier it was rare (lucky - as pointed out how serious earlier in this vid) anything could cut his armor! I consider the modern Guardians almost unrecognizable versus the earlier one. But unlike most re-makes, re-boots I won't go on a fanboy rage. Guardians was one of those throwaway/oddball experiments. Marvel during the pathetic Chew N Spew of the latest "Secret Wars"... made "Weirdworld" to hold all their beautiful one issue, sideline, short lived but fondly remembered properties so they could have them still living somewhere in fanboy's minds without justifying them to the major storyline.

24:45 Describing how the couple were married but only one could be there at any one time. This is a 1990 comic, and this interesting and romantic idea may have had some inspiration from the 1985 film “Ladyhawk” with Rutger Hauer (a cursed 12th century knight who is a wolf by night) and Michelle Pfeiffer (a cursed princess who is a hawk by day). The knight and princess are deeply in love but can never be truly together at the same place. Also stars Matthew Broderick playing Matthew Broderick but with medieval clothes on.

Oh and Marvel could have used Vance. Fox didn't have sole property of characters such as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver because they were tied equally to the Avengers side of Marvel. The Guardians, at large, would fall under that umbrella. Moot point now though. Disney owns (just about) everyone. They even own the characters... ho hum.
@jamesooten3659
@jamesooten3659 5 жыл бұрын
@@EmoEmu Have you seen where Disney is leasing out Marvel characters to IDW Comics? Seems that Marvel refuses to do any movie or cartoon tie-in books or books aimed at children, tweens, and younger teens. Since Disney owns the characters, they can lease them out to whoever they choose. Maybe IDW will do Marvel better than Marvel and eat their lunch. Disney could phase out the SJW wasp's nest that is modern Marvel Comics. They could lease out the characters to other companies while retaining movie rights. Maybe some writer at another company has just been itching to do Spider-Man or Cap, but will never get hired at Marvel. And he has a great story arc that would be box office gold, but he's not sharing it or using it in another story. He wants to do it with the real character. Seeing as how Marvel refuses to grow their next generation of comics fans (and customers), they're creating a point in time where their entire customer base will die off or become disinterested. And btw, Marvel's 25 year lease on their NY Headquarters comes due in 2020. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes then. Not when you're in competition with another company & Disney doesn't care who writes the stories, just who brings in the $$$, generates the hype, grows the fanbase, and fills the theaters.

@@EmoEmu Exactly what I was thinking. Move it all under the roof of Disney Animation. Get rid of anyone who doesn't want to make the move or who has an agenda counter-productive to the purpose of creating good comics. Did you see the controversy re: Marvel Comics Issue #1000 celebrating Marvel's 80th Anniversary? Mark Waid was supposed to write an essay about Captain America, but he went off on one of his man-child tangent rants about how awful America is under Trump. This got by the editors until comic shops began burning up the phone lines. Now the issue's being pulled/recalled and will have to be re-printed. Politics aside, I've never seen a company so mind-locked into destroying themselves.

You mentioned that the GotG were frequent guest stars in the 70's, but didn't mention they had a short lived series of their own.

Yes, it was in Marvel Presents: The Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel Presents was an anthology series that did several different runs. It did Deathlok right before the GotG. I forget what replaced GotG after their run was up.

Are those stickers on the wall behind you real originals? No way, they seem to be actually stuck to the wall, and only a kid of the era would have done that, and there’s not much chance you still live in the same house. Or am I wrong? Some people buy their parents home, and maybe you’re recording in your childhood bedroom. Seeing those stickers filled me with nostalgia for the era of FOOM, with Stan Lee awarding no prizes and exclaiming, “Excellcior!” I’m betting they’re reprints, right? Still, thanks for your show, you’re doing an excellent job!

I really liked these, but I also think I bought all or most of them in dollar bins around the mid-late 90s.

The Abnett/Lanning run is my favorite, especially the first few arcs. It was very sci-fi adventure and kind of weird at times. And I loved Adam Strange as a member of the team. He was written a little different than the Sterling days, but I enjoyed it, and Magus’ return. I wish the comics had not tried to ape the films so much after the success of the first movie. I hate it when Marvel does that.

Holy shit, haven't seen this particular episode before now. Not only did CT predict the movie GOTG2's use of "earlier" Guardians pre-2008, but also emphasized how cool Starhawk's "knowledge-time-travelling-and-reincarnating" power was, which Hickman seems to have retooled for Moira X in the House/Powers Of X X-Men revamp. I'm very late to the party, but had to comment.

Since Vance is Justice, the future Guardians is not the future of the main Marvel timeline. And Justice in the main Marvel timeline should be the Justice warrior from Spring (the early origin of Justice from the NewU). Hey do you talk about the NewU. I don't see any thing in the suggestions.

I loved the New U. Justice and Psi-Force were my favorites. Nightmask & DP7 were close 2nd's. I thought it was a great concept, not a throw-away experiment. Only in the post-modern era of comics do people truly understand the genius of Jim Shooter. Heck, he was writing the Legion of Superheroes for DC when he was 14. He carried the LSH thru their Adventure Comics heyday. Pretty good track record for a kid.

It is possible that they were actually published under t "Marvel Showcase" title, but I definitely remember reading Gaurdians of t Galaxy stories where they had their own book rather than guesting in another character's book back in t 70s.
