I never read Mantis as complicit in Ego’s deeds. I read her as a victim of abuse. She never had the power to stop Ego herself, and when the guardians show up, she sees a window of opportunity to stop him. But she fears Ego so she hesitates telling them. Eventually though, she builds the courage to do the right thing.
@TF2CrunchyFrog
@TF2CrunchyFrog Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Mantis tells them Ego abducted her as a small child and raised her on his planet because her powers are "useful". She is basically a slave to a godlike being. What is she supposed to do? I believe only her empathic powers showed her that killing those children was _wrong_ because they suffered; otherwise how was she supposed to know if Ego says it's okay? Ego is utterly amoral and a psychopath: He killed Peter's mother because she is "his"... but because he can't stay on Earth forever in his avatar body without losing his powers derived from regular contact with the rest of himself (the "planet") yet he can't bear the idea of her existing without him, he kills her in a cruel way, making it look natural. Ego allegorically _is_ cancer... his "seeds" he planted on various planets are swallowing all matter they come in contact with to transform it into more of Ego. Other Celestials grow from a seed into a planet and consume lifeforce of the planet's inhabitants, until they burst out of the planet. Ego is an weird Celestial... his planet is just a head, but he build himself a human body out of the molecules he controls, he craves love relations with mortals, and he's trying to absorb more biomass and non-organic matter to grow and spread on multiple planets but he first has to transform that matter into himself via those pseudo-plants. Ego is more like a fungus. And from what he was saying in the movie, he seems to be unaware of the other Celestials existing. He presumably knows about Knowhere... but that Celestial is long dead. Ego doesn't create Eternals either... he made offspring instead. I wonder if Marvel was implying Ego was created by the High Evolutionary? Speaking of the Eternals, I consider that movie non-canon. Otherwise you'd think the Eternals would want to stop Ego from eating the Earth considering at the time where was a budding Celestial inside that needed to feed on all the humans and other lifeforms Ego was trying to eat.

I always assumed Mantis, having known literally noone but Ego, was just groomed to see nothing wrong with mass infanticide, until she feels Drax's pain about his family, and finally has _one_ other parent to compare Ego to. And immediately she goes to herself "oh wow _that's_ what a dad is supposed to be? "

Also, Ego gets beaten quite a bit in the comics. For the non-cosmic characters (and for some of the cosmic ones too like the Silver Surfer), he's got enough vulnerable internal bits that assuming someone can get beneath the planetary surface and survive the critters that act as his antibodies/internal defenses they can hit him somewhere that hurts enough to put him out of commission...for a while. He doesn't really stay dead without extraordinary measures (Marvel Zombies using the power of Galactus, for example).

In "The Complex Feels of Guardians of the Galaxy v.2" Lindsay Ellis made a very strong case that the entire point of Guardians 2 is the struggle the characters have with questions of toxic family members and when to forgive and when to cut them off (Yondu/Nebula versus ego), and how to manage the psychological consequences of such upbringing. Mantis has cripplingly self esteem, Rocket pushes everyone away before they can hurt him, Quill has crippling narcissism that make him barely able to communicate with the people he cares about, like Gamora, as shown when she snapped at him about his pop culture reference that she has no way to understand. Ego doesn't admit to killing Peter's mom because he's Mr Exposition, he does it because he is so terminally narcissistic that he can't see it as a bad thing tha the did, just a sad thing that had to happen. She explains it a lot better than I can, it's a great video and it made me appreciate the movie a lot more.

Ryan has become a foundation of enjoying pop culture for me. If there is a new movie/show, whether it's a really good or really bad one, I just look forward to Ryan's take on it more. He needs to start getting invited to be part of conventions so he can eventually be invited to one in Australia and I can meet this fabulous human being :) P.S your skits that play on movie cliches are comedy gold, like the coffee side quest. If you could somehow get a list of cliches to somehow incorporate, I think that'd be a fun little addition as you encounter them in your pitch meetings :)

Hey Ryan! Ever since I discovered the Pitch Meeting (my first was Godzilla vs Kong) I've seen every video not about a movie I still haven't seen and want to (sometimes I watch a movie just to see the Pitch Meeting later!) and from your channel. Now, for questions: Is that a Cosmo the Spacedog tattoo on your arm? Who chose the name of your cat? Did you propose to your fiancée by saying "Don't you dare close your eyes"? To finish: PLEASE, FOR ALL THAT MATTERS TO YOU, DO A BATTLEFIELD EARTH PITCH MEETING - It was the recordist of the Raspberrys for a long time and so full of crazyness. Love your drawings, keep improving them!

I LOVED the twilight one when he just stopped and sighed, ‘what are we doing here?’ Looolll I prefer jokes about proper plot holes (which is 99.9% of the content anyway) more than the sort of ‘misunderstanding’ dialogue between your two characters. Amazing work tho, v excited every time you post a new one
