Keanu Reeves had a global hit with his action-packed movie The Matrix, and none of his movies since then really lived up to how amazing it was. That is, until John Wick rolled around in 2014. This action-packed shooter with a simple plot became a surprise hit and introduced the world to some awesome gun-fu action.
The movie does raise a few questions though! Like how did they manage to get the producers to get off their back about worldbuilding details and love interests? How does anyone feel safe at the Continental Hotel? Why didn’t Viggo stick around to make sure his men took care of John Wick, and why did John make a deal with Viggo just moments later? Also, why didn’t anyone Google Baba Yaga?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to John Wick! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

From what I’ve heard, there was some major reticence from the studio toward killing the dog, but the creative team stuck to their guns and were like “No, without that John is just some guy flipping out over his car getting stolen. The audience is gonna think he’s a psychopath. But if his dog dies, everyone instantly connects to John as the hero because of how much they hate the bad guys.” (Also, I REALLY love the behind the scenes look into your process, and I hope you keep doing it!)

"Let's bring his dog back though. He's recovered after a costly treatment. It was all a dream. He's okay. The bad guy missed; people miss all the time. He visits an ancient wizard lady who revives the dog but it costs a part of John's soul. The dog was also trained in gun fu and only pretended to have been shot but really he dodged the bullet. Keanu was in the Matrix, right? So maybe it was part of the simulation?" "... Are you done?" "How do I manage to sell this movie to children?" "You don't." "But... but money though. Hey maybe the dog wasn't a dog, it was a decoy." "No." "A robot. John rebuilds it. It was undead the whole time and he's a necromancer -- the Baba Yega thing?" "Sir, lets just try to make this one exclusively for grown-ups because if they like it, maybe they will want more of these." "A hologram! We could at least get a PG-13." "No."

Thanks for pointing out that absolutely ridiculous thing about John Wick’s nickname. As a native ru speaker from Belarus, that thing absolutely killed me. Especially since Wick also supposedly from Belarus and his name is Jardani Jovonovich, but literally no one is called like that here, ever. And also the fact they didn’t even manage to put a stress correctly, as it should be bAba yagA, not YAga.

Bro this will always be my personal favorite. All the jokes were spot on, the way the story was woven into this short was perfect, and John wick is such an incredible movie and you even exude that through the short obviously outside the few hilarious plot holes. Still kills me after the 1000th playthrough! You're the man Ryan George!

Always hoping you get to doing a pitch meeting for the Death Note movie. That movie was absolutely made for Pitch Meeting... and if it wasn't made for Pitch Meeting, I really don't want to know what that monstrosity was made for. Anyways, love your work as always! Excellent work, Ryan! ♥♥♥

I’m really enjoying these revisits to classic Pitch Meetings! It’s like watching a DVD movie with the director’s commentary, except for the talking over the whole thing to the point where you want to slap the director even though some of what he says is interesting. Keep up the fantastic work!

QUESTION TIME: 1. Is the Emoji movie your most hated movie for pitch meeting so far? if not, which movie is it? 2. What pitch meeting you've made so far are you the proudest of? 3. What makes you choose a particular film over other films? Is it popularity? I don't seem to remember a Pitch meeting for any horror movie yet marvel and DC are both fully covered Have a great day!

Developing your comedic style by working within the constraints of a small green screen is tight! (Also I agree that Producer Guy's six-second pause during which we see him take in the information about the dog, immediately followed by his call for retribution, is one of the best PM scenes of all. So thanks for mentioning that so I didn't have to.) *Pitch Meeting with its recurring jokes is genius-level proof that the secret to comedy is TIMING.* Thanks, Ryan! (And the ADstronaut is the funniest way to be sold at on the all of the utoobs)

4:02 I particularly enjoyed this bit for the way it subtly diverges from their normal personalities without truly leaving them behind. The first Pitch Meeting I saw was actually the Casino Royale one, in which it partly takes place in the British wing of the studio. I like those off the wall random divergences from the normal script.

I've seen these Pitch Meetings all over the KZbin reaction channels... I've seen a few here, too, but I wasn't subscribed until today. Ryan, you are one of the funniest people on KZbin. This is more than a talent, man, this is legendary comedy. I'm not exaggerating at all. Not relying on hyperbole is tight!! These are ON, all the time. You're always ON. I've never seen a Pitch Meeting video and thought, "Eh, that one was a bit of a dud," because NONE OF THEM ARE. Holy shit! I have ONE critique. And honestly, it's highly trivial, it's not even really a critique - it's very, very nitpicky critique, but that's how hard I had to look to find one, so please don't take it as a criticism. This is a VERY low batting average, here. Because that's how high the bar actually is with your content. I just really wish there was a throwaway line in here about how the Continental's doctor is played by Randall Duk Kim, who also portrayed The Keymaker in The Matrix Reloaded. :-) Obviously, he's the guy who sutures John's wounds in JW1 and JW3, before heroically ASKING to be shot...twice, despite the fact that the scene makes it very clear that this man stopped the exact SECOND he was supposed to. That's some rough shit, but you know what the real tragedy is? That adjudicator didn't give a single fuck about the doctor.

The dog drawing's pretty cute if you don't focus on the eyes and the snout too much and at the same time. Looking at one while ignoring the other still keeps the overall dog looking pretty cute. But, yeah, that combo definitely has Freddy vibes 😂
