@@TheImperfectGuy incorrect, the primary language was Italian, but because of the Austrian connections, most jobs in the area require you to be fluent in Italian and German especially for local government and civil servant jobs. I know this because my flatmate is from the region.

Which is the real challenge of the ü sound in German (especially for English speakers). It absolutely is different but marginally so and German-speakers will pick up on it if you get it wrong. The example I got taught when I learnt German was the difference between wurde (became) and würde (would). They sound similar if you just pronounce the ü as u in English but have different meanings.
