Thanks! It was a $117 kit off amazon and was pretty easy to wire in. I also left the wired remote wired up in case my batteries die in the remote or it stops working. Thanks for the comment! They are definitely a handy thing to have. I'm glad i bought mine well used and beat up, so I don't mind when i run into it with my skid steer, or hit it with my bucket, or drop concrete in it, or catch tree limbs while tailgating, or anything else that happens to it LOL.

A good rule of thumb is charge what the material cost you are haualing plus gas per mile

Hey Martin, that's a good rule, but could be changed a bit depending where you get your gravel. The state-certified yard i normally use is downtown along the river where it gets barged in and cost around $19-20 per ton. Then there is a coal mine that sells crushed limestone that is overburden and a waste product for them. Its $10-12 a ton, but not perfect gradations like the other yard. Also, if I go about 45 minutes south of my town, there's a quarry there and you can get state certified stone direct from the quarry for around $7-9 a ton. I find it best for me to try to make $50 an hour hauling since a triaxle hauling almost 5 times what I haul charges $95 an hour.

Barn doors aren't good at all for spreading. You will not be able to clean spread. I fabricated this rear door myself.

You're probably right! Like i said though, i mainly try to deliver gravel to advertise more than anything. If a customer wants 3 or more loads, i generally recommend them to someone else with a larger truck because I don't want to charge them so much for haul time and then they think I'm overpriced and not want to use me for other work.

I would like to know how you tailgate spread the gravel while the control is in the back near the trailer and you're driving up front? It almost seems like you would need two people for a tailgate spread.

Good question! I wired in a wireless remote for the hydraulic pump. Prior to that the cable was long enough for the controller to reach my cab but I would have to hang my arm way out the window and it was trouble when trying to back up or move around quick. The wireless remote is the way to go. This is the one I bought. amzn.to/3Wn2h9x

We're going to get a dump trailer for the lawn business it works good with leads and brush but We also gonna start hauling with it how would you charge

I prefer to charge the customer a price per ton for materials. Then a delivery fee based on distance. That way you get paid for delivery and they pay for whatever the quarry puts on your trailer, whether it be 4.8 or 6.2 tons. Otherwise if you make it a flat rate you lose when they load you up with 6. And if you try to just quote a price per ton delivered, you have a different price per ton for each customer who calls. Delivery fee and rock cost is easy to keep track of. My rock here is about $19.86 after tax so I just say $20 a ton plus my delivery fee. When I made the video is was $65. Now I'm at $80 for within 10 miles of rock yard.

Do you work for a broker? Who gives you all of the work? I currently do hot shot car hauling but want to convert to a transfer hot shot. Car hauling is just to much work and less pay.

Hey Damian! I actually just advertise on Facebook local buy/sell groups and also word of mouth. Drop business cards off at local hardware stores and post them on community bulletin boards.

@@steamhostler4252 do you mean to ask when do you need dot numbers? Or what does it take to obtain them? They're free to get a number, and depending on what level you get (for hire/not for hire, interstate/intrastate, etc) you may have to have safety audits, do annual inspections on all power units, keep driver and mileage log, random drug testing, and lots of paperwork. Basically you are supposed to have dot numbers if you have a power unit over 10k lbs gvwr and use it for commercial purposes.

Wow! That is a LOT of work to do just for a part time gig! If my 3/4 ton Dodge has a GVWR of 8800 and I get a dump trailer with a GVWR of 9990, run in state only, and don’t advertise on my trailer, would I need DOT numbers? I definitely wouldn’t need a CDL with both power and trailer under 10K GVWR each.

With the dump trailer I usually get around 5 tons. It's a 14k trailer and the trailer itself weighs around 4K.

Who do you go through for insurance?

For commercial auto I use a local agency that goes through auto owners. For my general liability I use Next insurance, an online company. Has been good so far but thankfully no claims

Correct. I think it's up to around 1800 a year now though because I added a single axle international dump truck. I have auto owners.

Yes it is a Carry-On 7x14 with 14k weight rating. The trailer itself weighs around 3500 so that leaves around 10,500. I usually like to haul around 5 tons but haul 6 occasionally since there's some weight on the hitch.

@@andyl2221 Good deal, i got mine used but it has been a good trailer. I would highly recommend a wireless remote if you don't have one already. Also, i have had the bottom of the C-Channel frame rip out where the rear of the rear leaf spring bears on the channel. I welded it back in, but i'm planning to weld in some stiffeners in the channel web at the 6 locations where the springs mount to the channel.

Thanks for the comment! This video was about 2 years ago. I'm charging 86 for a dump trailer delivery now when less than 15mi from the rock yard. Still cheap but it get my business cards floating around. I also just got a single axle dump now and I'm hauling with it as well. 10 ton loads and I'm charging a bit more.

@@alexbell9196 I currently do not have a US DOT number since I do not haul materials for sale across state lines (I am Intrastate, not Interstate). I do plan to apply for a US DOT number at some point though.

@@alexbell9196 Also, I do have a medical certificate on my driver file and a card i carry in my truck. You need that if you are over 10,000 lbs, but still under the 26,000lb cdl requirements. It needs to be renewed every 2 years.
