This makes me feel bad. I sometimes promote to a rook when I'm scared of stalemate (yeah, I'm that trashy), I hope my opponent doesn't take it as a sign of disrespect.
@kamaririvera6762 жыл бұрын
@@Sarah-oj7bh if you're scared of a stalemate when promoting, just take a couple of seconds before promoting to look at the squares the king can go to when you do promote, and if it would be in check or not. If it has no free squares and it wouldn't in check, either underpromote or wait a bit.
@Sarah-oj7bh2 жыл бұрын
@@kamaririvera676 Thank you, but I know theoretically how to avoid a stalemate. It's more that mating with rook and king is very straightforward, no thinking required, with a queen you have to pay attention a bit. It's still trashy to rather avoid that situation than think a moment about something that's not so complicated after all, but yah, that's how I roll I guess.
@shawnkoh54222 жыл бұрын
@@Sarah-oj7bh You can mate with queen and king using the exact same method as rook and king mate, and you will most likely never stalemate your opponent that way, even better - you likely won't lose your queen because your opponent's king can't move near it. I always use the same checkmate method regardless of whether I have a rook and king or queen and king vs king.
@thrawncaedusl7172 жыл бұрын
@@Sarah-oj7bh yep, my chess coach taught me that when you were clearly winning, always promote to a rook to avoid any chance of a weird stalemate. Anyone who actually knows about chess should not view it as trolling.

I really appreciate GTE because the analysis is more directly relevant to the kinds of games I play than the analysis of, like, Carlsen-Nepo. It's fun to watch analysis of high-level chess, but the tactics there are so far beyond what I can follow that it barely helps my game. Seeing shit like this, though, where Gotham is like, "Okay, you win by this forced simplification, it's not the best, but it makes things easier if you're 900" - yeah, that's what I need.

29:08 To be fair, it looks like Ng5+ from white creates a real mating threat, and certainly wins a rook at the very least. @Paul Harrison You're right that I felt like there was a huge mating threat from Ng5+ ... but I didn't see the queen at all. I was laser-focused for like 25 seconds on the bottom left quadrant of the board, trying to figure out if I let the fork happen, what would I do. Move away from the Rook, and Qxe6 and all hell breaks loose ... Kf6 hangs the h7 pawn and gets me forked AGAIN ... I chose not losing it! And completely missed my Queen. Oops.
