I have never turned Red Alder and found it to be a very pretty wood with nice grain and color. I turn a useful bowl today. Most of my turnings are not meant for food but this one might be.

I've heard of Red Alder but have never turned it. I do have a piece of Alder from Rick but it's not red, at least I don't think so. You did a great job with this very deep bowl! @@ThePapa1947 i've seen those bulk cutting tools that cut the Center out of big pieces to make another bowl with later instead of turning it all away. I have thought about getting one of those eventually. But I'm still learning so far. My biggest bowl is 11 1/half diameter by 5 1/2. Malay this small so it's about as big as diameter I can get for now. My lathe is only a 12--18. I figured one more year of practicing and learning from you and Mr. Phil I might be ready for a bigger lathe. I suppose time will tell.

Thanks Gary, I do look forward each week to meeting your turning. I’ve never seen red alder before so that was a special delight. Thank you to Rick Chapman. All the faces were great to see, pity about the lost bark, coffee grounds and ca would have fixed that though and given you a slightly larger bowl. You could have had a bigger bowl of popcorn. It’s funny that the shape of your popcorn bowl is similar to ours. Yours a little taller though.

Really nice Gary! I found some alder last year (I don’t know if it’s red) and it does have a beautiful reddish colour as well. As it ages alder gets more and more beautiful with an even warmer colour. A popcorn bowl is just right ! Cheers, Rick

Thanks Rick. I have cut more alder than I can remember for fire wood. We would get a permit to cut in some areas in the forest aout 40 miles from us. The size was not that great for turning though. I think the Red Alder must get much bigger. This was a nice piece. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Rick. Western Red Alder is pretty heavy wood, ideal for a bowl that you do not want to have tip over. So of course, popcorn came to mind. The inner bark spots do add some interest and contrast to the straight grain. Nicely done. Anytime you want more alder,just ask and I will cut one for you. We grow them for firewood, not turning.🤣🤣🤣

Thank you Valerie, I have another piece that size and Rick says he has more. Our son has acres of Alder but not like this stuff. He cuts it down for firewood as well.

Popcorn is always a classic, but maybe also some tortilla chips for a nacho bar at the next tailgate! Have you ever tried making/using an ellsworth or irish gring gouge? I love being able to use it as a shear scraper, especially with something punky like spalted maple.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 26 күн бұрын
Thanks Johnny and I think tortilla chips is a great idea. We will be having a birthday party for my wife in next month so I will fill it with chips. I have a gouge I did grind with really long wings.Hardly ever use it. Not really up on all the different signiture grinds so not sure what it would be. Thanks for watching, Gary

@ThePapa1947 yeah the ellsworth/Irish grind is basically a long wing ground Bowl gouge. Kent from Turn A Wood Bowl loves them and has good videos on how they can be used for different cuts. I tried it with my Sorby 1/2" gouge and i love it too!

Hum.....I have never turned alder wood. It looks like it turns very nicely. I do know there is a lot of DIY unfinished furniture made from this type of wood. So, it must be a decent wood for turning and wood working. Tell the boss lady to make more room on the shelf for a good popcorn bowl . It's definitely a very nice one!!!!

This is a lot different than the Pacific Coast Alder we have in Oregon. And we have tons of it. Matter of fact it was common to smoke salmo using alder. Because we have so much access to salmon and alder it became popular years before we were born. I have turned both and it is pretty decent to turn. Gary

@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 26 күн бұрын
Thank you John. Yes it does look a lot like those old helmets. The wrist is from an old army injury. Over the years it keeps getting worse. Hopefully it gets better. The wrist brace helps a lot. Thanks for asking, Gary

Very nice Gary! On the one side before you said it, I saw Sherlock Holmes! I do have a question for you. Do you experience any tear out with your negative rake scraper? I currently don't have a negative rake scraper but have been looking to get one. It seems like you use yours on most every turning so I think I already know your answer! Thanks again for sharing and such a beautiful piece it is!
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 22 күн бұрын
Thank you Michael. I think it is cool how we can see images in our turnings. And some see it different. I will have to watch again and see if I see Sherlock in there. "Nice observation Watson" LOL So the negative rake scrapers does a great job. Now and then there might be a wood that is just going to tear out no matter what. Coming up in a few weeks you will see a very hard wood where that scraper makes the finest shavings you can imagine. I think I commented on that. Thanks for watching, Gary

Hello, why do you only shave bowls? Why don't you carve something new? Recycled ordinary bowls. Make something new. Like carve a pendant. Or a candlestick. Or a cup. Carve recycled ordinary bowls.

As a retired wood patternmaker I made more non ordinary things that your mind could imagine. If you want to spend some time looking at all the turnings I have done you will find many non ordinary things I have done. Have a look at them and see what you think. Try looking at some of my multi axis turnings. Check this one out and let me know what you think. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHvNfJxtep1lmNk
