Nice video!! Purple leaves are not sunburned tho, but more like a sunscreen to protect the leaves from to much light. They are stressed, but not damaged, compared to sunburned, where the leaves bleach up to a very crispy stage of no return. =)

I’ve no grow lights so I sow early /mid March. Scotch bonnet. Apache & Red Devil all do fine here from seed in southern east coast of Northumberland. All of them are useable in the kitchen (my Red Devils overwintered well IN VERY SMALL POTS and are budding & growing leaf in January 2024 🤞

Hey JB Really good info in this one. I see the helmet head in tomatoes and some of the green beans I grow, I like the water spritz. I find this can be a real big problem if they happen to any of the leggy plants if so I will take 2 pair of tweezers and hold the plant with one ant squeeze the shell at the tip to pop it open.

Thank you so much for this clear information JB. Last year i was unable to grow anything and just maintained my garden but this year I hope to grow more! Can't wait! I'm only doing two types of chilli peppers this year to ease myself in. I've sown them on the 30th of January and I'm praying they'll be ok. Thank you again for a fab video.... I always understand you perfectly and shall look forward to the next chillies update!! Take care Jb... 🌶 ❤

If the seed shell gets stuck on the seedling, salvia your thumb and index finger, put it to the seed shell, and leave the fingers for a few minutes ( like you would pinch them) The salvia will wet the shell and then you can gently remove it from seedling. A yellow sticky card works on groundworms.

I kept 2 of last year's plants on the kitchen window sill, mostly because they had fruits on quite late. We picked the last chilli yesterday, and there are flower buds on the plant. The other plant that I had almost decided to throw out has flowers and a mini pepper already growing. I knew they could be cut back and overwintered, but I didn't know they would keep flowering and fruiting if just left to it.

Great video JB. I've put a fan on mine for the first time this year so I'm excited to see what difference it makes. As expected my germination rate with mostly Chillichump seeds has been as good as ever so I'm going to have to give as many away as I can and be ruthless with the rest.

Hi JB, seed casings stuck on seedlings can be easily removed….Gross but works….. by our spit. If you spit enough to just cover and soak the seed, leave it a minute, try to remove it, if not do it again and honestly they come off. Info curtesy of Jess at Roots and Refuge Farm in the US. 🤗🤗🤗

Watering with some neem solution definitely helps with the fungus gnats, I also combine with those yellow sticky things. The seed casing getting stuck on I read a couple years ago it's apparent good to 'spit' on them, or at least dribble a little saliva over them haha! Apparently the enzymes found in saliva will gently work to remove anything that is keeping the seed coat stuck on them. I admit I have tried this myself (lol!) and a day or two after generally I've found the casing does easily slide off.

Thanks JB! They are looking great! I made a big boo boo with mine and was silly to use the paper mache cells. They are germinated within a week and was doing well under the grow light and we have the fan on but those pots were awful and i should have known better as they started damping off last week. I have re potted them up and maybe 2 of the thai dragons are ok but i am going to re sow them in small pots this time. Those homemade loo roll pots and store paper mache cells just hold on to too much water imo. Better the devil you know too, as they say. We have been making the most of the good weather and restructuring the layout of the garden. My aim for this year is to make the garden look a bit more prettier rather than just functional. We did a tip run on Thursday. So hard as we still have to make appointments since they reopened after lockdown. We also need to do it when we can put the seats down in the back, aka no kids in the back and the last appointment is 3.30pm. I also can't go on my own as i have bad problems and hubby has never learnt to drive. Feels good to get rid of the crap that had built up! We helped my Dad clear the leaves from his 300+ yr old oak tree that dominates his garden last weekend. He has one of those backpack/ ghost buster type leaf blowers. I done my back in as they are quite heavy and hubby has a broken finger since the beginning of Jan but still managed to fill 3 of those really huge bags of mowed leaves! We also had a delivery of 500L of compost and also some bagged manure. We should/could of put it down in autumn but we just started putting it all down with cardboard, etc and also reusing our old sandpit as a new veggie bed. The sand has been great for the carrot bed and we also put some down on the heavy clay areas. I'm hoping we have it all done in time. Nice seeing the beds looking all fresh though. Good dark compost from all the stuff i have seen and not found any junk when we were transferring it to the back garden in the wheelbarrow. £85 inc free delivery plus a free bag and pallet! lol Hope you both have a great weekend!

If a lot of seeds have helmet head, that is your cue to sow them a little bit deeper! Also, you can use BT and the yellow sticky paper in tandem for fungus gnats, they do lessen the amount of gnats considerably.

I have a timer for my light so it turns on at 6:30 and turns off at 22:30. Thanks for reminding me that I need to get new fans though, as both mine stopped working the past season... Nice shot of the ladybug larvae 😍Luckily i didn't have any aphids last year. It was the first year I grew stuff on the balcony for a full season since I got it glassed. I think (or imagine at least) that it might be the glass preventing them to get in to the plants. I'm hoping for the same this year (touch wood)! I do however have some fungus gnats... Feels like they always come with store bought soil, which is what I use since I live in an apartment and can't really make my own compost 😥But I bought some of those spiral sticky strip things today though, hoping the get stuck on them hehe. For helmet heads I usually use a tweezer to squeeze the "helmet" open. If that doesn't work, then I do what you suggested and keep them moist 👍

So helpful! Thank you! I am a little behind you. Mine sown about a week ago and chilli chump seeds arrived and sown this weekend. Never the less I’ve got fungus gnats in my house and was worried about it so it was reassuring to hear you say not to worry. 😮‍💨 By the by, I was listening to an old potty mouth garden club episode while up my allotment yesterday (totally in my happy place!) and Steve (❤) mentioned you had advised him on what mild chillis to buy from chilli chump. Would love to know your advice on this. I don’t like a lot of heat but love chillis so would love to know! TIA! Xxx

This series is so helpful 😊. I've just potted most of mine on for the first time today 😬. 5 of my cayennes have had to fend for themselves though as i need to order some more lights later this week. I've made a temporary place for them in the windowsill, so fingers crossed they survive for a while. The Habaneros are still small enough at the minute that they can stay in the modules for now.

I am really chuffed to have little Lemon Drop and Cayenne seedlings after just two weeks. I have them on a sand covered cable in an outside greenhouse. I put little plastic tops on for humidity and threw over some bubble wrap. I kept the thermometer close to them.The temperature often dropped below 27C so I was a bit worried.

Great video, lots of lessons for me to take into next year. What are the models of the lights you use?
@JBNat
@JBNat 8 ай бұрын
I use the viparspectra P1000 - but this model has been updated and no longer has a fully controllable dimmer which is frustrating! Any similar sort of light around a similar wattage (mine is 100W) from somewhere like marshydro/viparspectra/spiderfarmer will do very nicely. But you can get by with cheaper models too, just have to find some reviews from trusted techy websites.

My chilli seedlings seem to have stalled. They started well and a few are just sowing signs of the true leaves but for the last week or two are stuck at that stage. I do have quite the fungus gnat problem now all of a sudden and have been bottom watering them since they germinated. Mine were sown on Jan 11th and I would have thought they would be bigger. They are in Sylvagrow too , which is odd. I have ordered some fungus gnat nematodes now but would it be ok to try potting onto to individual cells, mine are in seed trays at the moment? I am going to get a fresh sylva grow bag too and will bring some rain water indoors as I have been using tap water at room temperature. My tap water is pretty neutral in our area as it comes from bore holes and artesian wells mainly, and I have not normally had a problem.

I ordered mine from chillichump after seeing some of your videos and they’ve now got their cotyledons. How high above the seedlings do the lights need to be? I think I might have mine too close. Thanks
@JBNat
@JBNat Жыл бұрын
It all depends on the power of your lights. They vary dramatically so your first season with them it's a case of looking for the signs I discussed in the video - purpling leaves, closing up their leaves vs going leggy and reaching for light.
