Thank you for this! Also of note: Normal: Stats: 1 point into dex for scimitar, rest into vitality. High priority items: shop Act 1 2 socket scimitar for TirEl (Steel), 2 socket armor for TalEth (Stealth), 2 socket helm for NefTir (Nadir) or RalRal / TirTir / etc. Shop Act 2 for 3 socket shield (or find Paly shield) for RalOrtTal (Ancient's ledge). Scepter with +hammers (lvl 18) or +FCR. Items with ar/dmg/life/res/ias/fhr, +fcr (for casting hammers). Act 3 shop for staff with teleport charges - easiest at under 20 I think. Nightmare (level 18+): Stats: str: to 50, dex: enough for max block with holy shield, energy: to 35 for hammers, Items: better belt (res, fhr), boots (res, frw), gloves (res/life), helm OrtSol (Lore), armor: TalEth (Stealth), NefLum (Smoke), Vipermagi, sword: 4 socket sword TalThulOrtAmn (Spirit) - farm normal cows for sword that can have at least 4 sockets (Crystal/Long/etc - check str requirements) and go to Larz (unless you find one that already has 4 sockets). Great guide but I would def not respec to hammerdin at 18, since you will probably be on the second half of Act 2 by then and your hammers dont deal very well with walls on the tombs. Also, Holy Fire will still be absolutely demolishing everything by then and your mana regen isn't very good. It can literally brick your character and make you unable to progress. Maybe advance into the Holy fire build until it stops being good and then respec when you have some gear.

EXACTLY. My normal attack deals 100+ damage and with Zeal I can hit twice with some AOE. Now I re-specced and blessed hammer is dealing 20~40 damage. I'm speechless.

I'm glad that I read these comments as I stayed Holy Fire all the way to Baal (would have stayed past him but his last wave of adds gave me real trouble). If you can grab a Kinemil's Awl it makes the build hilarious as you can just run circles around mobs and kill almost anything in 2-4 ticks. Wish I still had it for Nightmare but Hammer seems to be working fine.

I agree with pretty much everything, I personally ride the holy fire train until I go to nightmare, it is just so broken at low level, at 20 you can easily be hitting for 100-150 per hit with your bare fists.

Was going to suggest the same thing. Save the Respec for when you can do some more damage with hammers. Honestly I'd probably rotate skill points for that into synergies as well to save some mana, but not as necessary once you get insight for merc.

I realize I may be playing this wrong but I used my respec at 18 into hammers. They are garbage at this level. My gear is pretty decent. Steel sword, tarnhem scull cap, 2x manderald heal rings, chains of cthon boots and blood fist gloves. I should have stayed holy fire as I was killing pretty fast. Now im chugging several pots just to kill one pack. I do have a spirt sword and AP shield when i hit them levels but not sure it will be usable as the mana cost of hammers will be so high. If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated.

If you literally try it on players 8 singleplayer, you'll see it's much easier to switch at 20 something even with good gear or later if you have bad gear.

I generally like your guides @MrLlamaSC, but this paladin has some flaws. Blessed aim is the absolute worst synergy to level first, you will never equip it as your aura. You should be maxing blessed hammer and any extra points on vigor, because vigor you can actually use to run around. The order for leveling hammerdin skills should be hammers, vigor, blessed aim, concentration in solo, and hammers, concentration, vigor, blessed aim if playing with friends who will greatly benefit from your aura. Consider putting 1 point into redemption to heal quickly after fights, and 1 point into salvation if you and/or your party has resist issues by hell diablo. If you're going to respec at 18, you can easily just swing what you find / vendor scepter with your lvl 1 might to that and skip the zeal, or find a scepter at vendors with zeal on it at 12, so you don't need to respec and just build towards hammerdin, using lvl 1 might to 18 and just get the pre-requisites for b hammer, concentration, vigor, holy shield. While I can see the value of holy fire zeal early on for a speedrunner, the amount of time saved 1-18 for someone who intends to play hammerdin isn't worth the respec. Another thing you should have covered with hammerdin is that you should be getting holy shield at 24 and having charge when it becomes available in preparation for it. Charge+vigor is the best way to move around without enigma/tele charges both while going through the game and in end-game, and once you have dual spirit, you can afford the mana cost of charge easily. Holy shield short duration at level 1 is annoying, but once you have spirit x2 it's well worth keeping up, and around the level holy shield becomes available, you should be farming your spirits anyway. Arguably at low level when everyone casts slow, in open areas, charge is comparable to teleport and is amazing for finding the next A2 or A3 area. The power of hammerdin is that you can level as hammerdin from the start, as scepters do very high base damage so just having lvl 1 might on your way to concentration and swinging your scepter will get you to 18. I highly recommend TirTir helmet or 3Tir shield + 2x sapphire helmet early on (you're farming norm countess for Tal/Eth for Stealth anyway, might get some Tirs), it will do wonders for you at 18 when you start casting hammers, and this goes for any mana-hungry character. Keep TalThulOrtAmn (Spirit) and RalTirTalSol (Insight merc) if they happen to drop while farming your stealth, otherwise farm them in nightmare countess anyway. And Lore helm you covered. For insight, same as spirit sword, 4 sockets poleaxe drops in norm cows or has the level to give exactly 4 sockets at Larzuk. Another note on zeal, in regards to staying on 2 hits, consider that having more hits on zeal does not cost more mana, and also "casts" the mana cost slower since it takes longer to hit 5 times. 5-hit zeal both has significantly more damage output and better mana efficiency, well worth the 5 hit animation lock. If you're going to go to the route of zeal respec into hammers, you may as well keep zeal until you make your spirit sword and spirit shield in nightmare using whatever weapons you find. With double spirit, hammerdin you will have skipped the mana issues that hammerdins have to deal with at low level. Zeal is the most powerful (and I dare say most fun) melee skill in the game levels 1-29 and can get you through norm efficiently. Again, scepters in the game have very high base damage compared to other 1hand weapons and are found at vendors.

He's showing it in chronological order, when he first puts those points into blessed aim in the video he wouldn't be lvl 18 with spare points for vigor because he's maxing blessed hammer first. Of course Vigor will be maxed before Blessed aim from then on but he can't put points into it before that point because you have limited points for two lvl 18 skills at that point. Also 5hit animation lock for leveling as Zeal at a ladder start feels so much worse than putting a single point into it if you're choosing what you kill efficiently and not just mindlessly full clearing.

I don't think it's right to say you'll neve respec again on hammerdin, it's a matter of stat allocation, you don't know how much str you're gonna have with your end game gear on, or dex for max block. Maybe spend most of it hard-points before some gear, and respec after anni+torch etc for more vit. I still think respecing at 18 is just silly though.

Hey, thanks for the guide it's awesome, i was testing the progression till level 18 this morning, and it was so smooth but i felt a lack of damages when i respected, wouldnt that be a good solution to stay with the first setup to get a few more level to spec in the Hammer tree ? Update, i used holy fire maxed out till the end of act 3 and it was smooth i swiched to hammerdin level 26, i'm a total noob on diablo so that might explain a lot too :p but i'm having a blast with the hammerdin :)

I agree with this. I followed this by switching at 18 and it was terrrrrible - I was destroying everything and went to almost crawl kill speed. Now that same pally is 33 and yes it's destroying. I would not do the respec until at least the last 20s. Moving at 18 makes it very painful for a while.

Vigor is natually your primary mobility tool pre-enigma. Concentration probalby because its an outside modifier to damage - each point in synergies provides a static % of damage, meaning that the more points you spend the less relative gain, while concentration just multiplies the end value. Additionally, in any form of group play if there are other players able to benefit from auras, concentration will naturally be better.

I was destroying things with Holy Fire just walking around and things would melt, but now with Blessed Hammer it feels like the damage is significantly less, I oom, and now im also standing still instead of mobile? I did the exact same thing as you with the same result. Unless you want to re-roll and delay the respec until later (late 20s at a minimum), you'll just need to switch your weapons and straight melee for a while - especially since at 18 you might be in the spider dens which have NO room for hammers to twirl. It ruins the game for a little while, but you'll be ok mid Act 3 or so. Hammers take a while to get used to (you have to change your gameplay / movement as well) and Act 2 is a terrible time to do it.

If you're specced into hammers you'll only use hammer in left click with concentration as an aura on right click. Blessed aim is just a synergy to blessed hammer but doesn't actually work with blessed hammer. Only concentration aura works for whatever reason.

I can’t just play these games as ranged DPS all the time so I went from holy fire to holy shock and it was super super strong until I got to Hell. So it allowed me to play melee for the first two difficulties at a pretty good clip until hammers just became way too convenient

hammers always spiral clockwise, starting from around 2 o'clock position, takes some practice but after some time you should be able to open doors with it. In open spaces it sometimes makes sense to stutter step, moving and shooting, and letting the hammers cover each others deadzones (given its not your typical area attack, but a moving projectile)

Why starting with points in blessed aim instead of vigor? Vigor is always used in town and blessed aim is useless

I would've added getting a Teleport Staff to the list and explained that the easiest way to get it is in A3 Normal being level 23. But I guess thats more of a general thing since it applies to every class sans Sorc. I would also add how big Strangling Gas Potions are the first 12ish levels, they speed up Countess running by a lot. Also, you should consider making an Ancients Hell guide that covers the basic strat with each class and the different AI exploits, I know a lot of people struggle with that part of the game.

Blessed Hammers are so random though, how do you consistently kill enemies with that? Or do you just let your merc handle it if they get too close?

They are not random, they always spawn from the same angle so you just need to learn where to position yourself so that your hammer instantly hit the enemies when you cast them

you can but only at like 90+ since you need to invest a good amount of points into fanaticism before giving it a go. Just remember you won't have the increased max res either from a dedicated smiter build. I would also recommend getting exile or HoZ before even considering it. Drak's are also a must if you don't have exile.

Where should I farm look if I want a 4 socket Broadsword/Longsword? I dont really care about wasting a couple of points in stats but I hate how the Crystal Sword looks and would prefer a more realistic sword. I would reserve Larzuk for a 4 socket shield since those are alot harder to farm out AFAIK. Couldn't I just check the vendor in Act 2 on Nightmare? They sell Broadswords and Longswords AFAIK and I think they can have 4 sockets starting on Nightmare right?

I also thought the same. I have a spirit long sword. You can farm normal cows to get a broad/long sword. Then you can socket quest it. Or find 4 socket broad/kings swords in nightmare or hell cows. It’s been a month, you may have found these by now haha!

I've put too much into dex. I'm level 70, just hit like 155 dex (with stealth) and am only at 74% block chance. I only put 1 point in holy shield because I have +5 to skills on gear. When I respec, I'll have to put 2 points and put the spare dex in to vitality. Then I'll have to use my 3rd respec when I get some +skills charms and save even more dex points for vitality.

@@justchill4297 I'd have to agree with Brandon there, do it if you want experiment. I will say you'll run into immunity problems in nightmare though if you don't have a really good weapon. Typically the aura builds like holy shock and holy fire work well with fast weapons so I'm not sure the physical damage on those weapons will be enough, but you might be able to surpass that with a good merc with might aura.

@@justchill4297 pretty sure you might be able to switch to fist of the heavens later too because of the synergy. Vengeance might be something to consider if you want to keep it a melee build. Once you get to hell I think all of the above may prove to be a bit lackluster though.

you receive bonuses for your main skill from the other auras by just having skill points in it. Read your tooltip.
