I decided at 9 months after stroke to try a sprint. I was worried about falling, so I did it when I went to Laguna Beach, California. That way I was guaranteed a soft landing if I fell. Tara, I've watched you since I was in the hospital with my stroke in April/21. I've had a great recovery and you have been a big part of it through your videos.

A newskill, that I'm training on now is walking on a sloped cushion bench in my gym. I'm progressing to walking side ways and backwards on it. So I climb up first without holding and clib down backwards forcing to keep my spine upright to avoid looking down. There is a huge mirror towards my left side and I'm instructed to lok only on mirror during this activity. Quite a tedious task but everything is helping me progress for managing my daily difficulties. I would like to motivate others to do but with supervision

Running is still a long way from me, I am progressing the easier exercises shown, I am trying to climb and descend the stairs as fast as possible, I think that is a good preparation. Of course with the handrail, if needed. Have a nice week.

I recognized after getting good with walking, that if I want to advance to running I would have to develop strong and explosive plantar flexion. I feel like surely I am not alone in that this movement was hit particularly hard with deficit after the stroke. So a lot of work and long gradual progression. Not a quick fix, which is fine because I think most of us here that watch your videos are in the proper mindset to keep moving forward no matter if it's slow and gradual. Anyway, A couple ideas that might be useful for others, I know they have been for me. One is to regain a baseline level of strength with beginner plantar flexion exercises that I know you have already covered. But for advanced people I have some ideas. One is getting on a seated incline leg press and doing reps with no added resistance at all at first, on your tiptoes. Like incline squats on your tiptoes. Not sure why but the was VERY difficult at first. It was the like synergistic movement of bending at the knees and lowering myself while maintaining a plantar flex (the tiptoes), was just practically gone to my brain. But forcing myself to do it with light weight and a safe controlled environment, like the machine at the gym (and help from my good leg), and I did succeed at getting it back. I feel like this could be a precurser to jumping, for those who can't jump yet. The other tips are methods for assisted hopping. One is to stand in front of dip bars, facing them with hands gripping the ends. This way you can use arm strength to give the assist, while you try hopping on the affected foot. This works well... gives you the confidence to try hopping without the fear of hurting your ankle on the landing because the arms can take over as much of the launching and landing burden as you need them to. The other is cinch one of those very large rubber bands over a pullup bar, then pull the it down and loop it under you good knee. Now the rubber band provides the assist while you hop on the affected foot. This works well too, and I am well on my way to regaining strong, explosive plantar flexion... and running again.

I didn't have a stroke, but several TIAs the last 9 months. I carry vascular EDS I got to find out recently as well. After my 2nd/3rd TIA (in May) I've had issues running. I used to run Ultra Marathons, or I still aim to do so.. I get headache now when running, getting brain fog and dizzy as well. I can walk, skate and bike. But my brain doesn't seem to have have recovered in this 2-3 months and can't handle all the bouncing. Is this something you seen in your job before?

Hello, I had a subdural hemorrhage at 17 years old, due to an idiopathic stroke. I can walk, speak, and feed myself independently. But, I cannot walk more than 250m (around the same in running) as my left foot claws with an equinovarus. I cannot find any therapist who gives me appropriate treatment that works... I tried baclofen, gabapentin, and stretching, but nothing improved my mobility or my range... Is there a video you made that could help me or any exercise that could help me run again? I do jumping rope to keep stamina...

Hi, just really curious on routine activities I can do to help me jogging to running to eventually playing Touch Football again.,which I love doing but due to me having a Brain stroke,I am I guess starting again. I suffered a brain stroke the end of December 2022 and was hospitalised and bed ridden for four (4) months and was on the wheel chair for seven (7) weeks and just started walking and now very light jogging but still feel that the strength and flexibility is really lacking hence coming online to check out Avenues for Rehabilitation to Start or what steps and routines I can do to help me start running and eventually play Touch Football again. I have always love playing and Also been involved with the local clubs Here in Papua New Guinea. I know it won't be easy but I know I can do this. Little steps at a time. I'm excited and very eager.

Tara, jumping, hopping, skipping, leaping, (& yes, most definitely running) all require controlled active dorsiflexion and plantarflexion of the ankles to either propel the body or absorb the impact of each landing foot, don't they? Yet after looking at you demonstrate all the recommended drills, I didn't see very much of that. So, am I incorrect that dorsiflexion & plantarflexion play such critical roles, or was the list of things needed for running not exhaustive?
