There are many ways to install cylinder sleeves in an engine block however, we prefer to use liquid nitrogen to freeze the sleeves allowing us to drop them into the block.

How long does it take to immerse the cylinder sleeve in liquid nitrogen?
@williambaisley8594

Really enjoyed your video. We have a Rottler similar to yours, not exactly the same. Our cutter setting fixture uses a traditional barrel type micrometer, which moves the anvil .050 per revolution, rather than the standard .025. It’s easy to make a mistake. I put the sleeve in the freezer and warm the block in the oven before installation. Probably overkill, but I don’t want to get stuck pounding with a hammer. How much of an investment is it to get set up with liquid nitrogen? Also, how much material do typically leave for a shoulder at the bottom of the cylinder? Not even going to ask how you drilled the crack within the limited space of the cylinder. Keep sharing your knowledge.

It's not too bad with the liquid nitrogen. I think a large 20L dewar like we have was around $250 on amazon and I get the nitrogen from my local welding supply house which is about $50 to fill the dewar up. I like to leave around .150-.200 of a shoulder at the bottom depending on the block. The two holes really weren't that bad to drill. I have a tight right angle drill that takes its own drill bits so it's easy to get in there and drill them.

Dose the cutting of the sleeve in the block help provide a "Friction Fit" for the cylinder block bond?
@pageracingengines
@pageracingengines 8 ай бұрын
The block is cut to provide a press fit on the sleeve and then once the sleeve has reached room temperature we can bore the sleeve close to the final bore size before finish honing.

Is .001 enough with the variances in the sleeve? She went in super easy. Neat work btw 👍
@pageracingengines
@pageracingengines 10 ай бұрын
Yes, that is why we measure at so many different locations on the sleeve to find the average. It also helps that it's an iron block so the sleeve and block expands at basically the same rate as they heat up.

What kind of press fit do you shoot for?? nice looking shop brother
@pageracingengines
@pageracingengines Жыл бұрын
We typically shoot for around .001 press fit in the block but can vary based on sleeve type and block material.

Do u need to coat the new sleeve with Alusil or something?
@pageracingengines

No they are cast iron and designed to be run uncoated.

Do you know how cold you're going ? as you are able to go colder than cast iron is really ok with using nitrogen
@pageracingengines
@pageracingengines 6 күн бұрын
Not exactly. There's not a lot of press on the fit so the amount that it shrinks/chills should not get to the point of damaging the cast sleeve.

Do aluminum sleeves T6 6061 withstand high horsepower?
@pageracingengines
@pageracingengines Жыл бұрын
Aluminum is not a common material used in sleeves. Sleeves are typically made of ductile iron which gives a stronger and tougher material to handle the higher horespower.

No sleeve retainer "juice"?
@pageracingengines
@pageracingengines Жыл бұрын
When sleeving an iron block, the retaining compound is not necessary since the expansion rates are the same and we also use enough press so they won't move around.
