This is a rather long video, a "real time" IFR flight from KDXR to KHPN.
ATC clearance, cockpit setup and checks are explained. ATC is recorded live. Note how busy the radio is.
Your comments & suggestions are always welcome.
happy Landings,
Guido

Another great one! As an IFR student I really appreciate your videos - the extra time you are taking to add additional info and talking through what you are doing is great. My videos are similar, but I'm just a private pilot in small GA aircraft :) - It is awesome to see a guy like you doing the same in jets and turboprops! thanks!

Thank you! Best of luck for your IFR training. You will see that once you start to apply all the stuff you are learning now it becomes much easier. And will make much more sense to you... IFR principles are the same in all aircraft. Reply to "Troublemaker John" (KZbin does not allow to do this directly) PF stands for pilot flying (the one who manipulates the controls), PM stands for pilot monitoring (who supports the PF and monitors his/her actions). PM was called PNF before (pilot non flying), but PM describes the actions and responsibilities better. You normally swap the tasks PF/PF on every flight. The Captain PIC (pilot in command) can be PF or PM, can even sit on the right seat. But it must be clearly defined (before the flight) who is PIC. Happy Landings, Guido

Answer to Jacky Chan: the IFR departure runway 26 is: climb runway heading to 1,500ft then left turn to the CMK (Carmel) VOR. In the USA, there are more and more very complex RNAV departures, which you need to load from the database. Sometimes 40 way points. Happy Landings, Guido

Hello Guido. My name is Karl and I am a French pilot that recently moved to Houston based out of the Sugarland airport with about 1000 hours. I have been watching all of your videos posted in KZbin and just wanted to say thank you very much for taking the time to create these amazing videos, the quality and professionalism is outstanding and provides very useful and practical information. I recently started flying a Citation V 560 and preparing to take the type rating by January and was wondering if you have any advice or additional information and/or videos to help me prepare. Anything help will be really appreciated. Looking forward to your reply and once again thank you for your dedication Best regards, Karl

Captains, that was a wonderful thing to behold. I expected the usual pride or hierarchical structures but saw nothing even close to that. Everything was cross checked with the ultimate professionalism, brilliant. I hope I don't offend when I say that I'm sure you both possess big egos, most people do, I saw no sign of anything like that getting in the way of those procedures and that shows real experience and superb safety consciousness on the part of both Captains. I'm sure it's second nature and nothing much to you but to witness that was both reassuring and heartening. Thanks!

Hi Evan, this was a "positioning flight" to pick up passengers at KHPN. These fights happen quite a lot. It costs a lot of money but is still cheaper than to base the aircraft at these expensive New York metropolitan airports. Hangar space can be easily &10,000 per month. Guido, Just came across your videos on KZbin. Great stuff! How does a 50+ year old guy with Comm/Instrument/Multi and 600 hours work his way into flying a Citation or King Air? Always been my dream job. Looks like you have have mentored some co-pilots. Is that a possibility, or do I need the magic 1500 hours to even be considered for right seat in turbine equipment? Don't have time now in current career to do CFI, but can afford to build more time in SEL. Currently flying a Cirrus SR20/22 out of PDK. Any advice greatly appreciated. Looking forward to more videos. Best Regards, Brian Burton

Who is controlling the aircraft when they are taxiing?
@mujtaba105
@mujtaba105 8 жыл бұрын
+Tim Stringer you use your feet to steer on the ground in airplanes. the rudder pedals are located in a similar position like the pedals in a car. they also control the Yaw of the aircraft in the air; and they control braking on the ground.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, the movement of the yokes is triggered my a connection between the rudders and the ailerons. In this aircraft, you steering on the taxi is conventional by pushing the pedals right or left. By doing so also the ailerons "magically" move. The connection is to minimize the need to use rudder in fight during turns. Google: adverse yaw. Happy Landings, Guido

Damn!!! Talk about busy ATC for a short hop! You never get bored with that kind of air work and traffic! Nice CRM work.This is an excellent example of why we fly IFR flight rules even with CAVOK / VFR conditions. Makes life so much easier for ATC and the tower. Yes, there's more chatter and strict flying the routes, but it sure does make for a clean flight. +1

Aloha, Guido... Thank you so much for taking us along with you on your flights; very educational! My question: I've been trained to always be aware of the flight controls position while taxiing, i.e. turn up and into a headwind, turn down and away from a tailwind, but I see you leave the controls alone and they move around quite freely. Would you kindly provide some background on this topic? Thanks. Hope you make a visit to Hawaii on one of your journeys sometime! Bill

Hi Bill, in a light aircraft it is a good rule to "control" the airplane at all the time. In heavier airplanes this is of lesser importance. If the winds are strong, we do the same though. Here a video in a 60 knots wind: C501 landing in 60 knots winds at Stornoway EGPO! Both hands on the controls and it almost snapped out of my hands. Greetings to Hawaii. Thank you! What you see on the ground and looks like an "autopilot" is in fact the connection between rudders and ailerons (makes turns in flight easier). As a side effect in the ground when I steer the nose wheel with the rudders, the ailerons move. Makes it look like "autopilot". Thank you for this commented video. Are you allowed to disagree with the initial altitude given by ATC ? ( Is 3000 feet not low for a jet ?) Did you use AutoPilot at any moment? ( didn"t seem so). Does the copilot get hour of flight credit as well that would count for certification ? Thank you again for sharing you high quality video !!
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 9 жыл бұрын
MichRom Final authority for clearances is always the pilot - but you have to have a good reason to decline a clearance. 3,000ft is not low. Turns are usually initiated as low as 400ft above the ground. We flew by hand, just to stay current, but use of autopilot is also ok. In fact if you fly single pilot, the use of autopilot is strongly encouraged. Flight logging: this depends on the type of aircraft. The Citation V is a 2 crew aircraft, so both pilots log the time. I fly the Citation V on some videos single pilot, this is under an FAA exemption, for which I have to do a very strict simulator course. On aircraft requiring only one pilot, e.g. a King Air, you can only log time on the right seat if you actually manipulate the controls or of the aircraft is under a part 135 (charter) flight. To be under part, 135 BOTH pilots must have the required qualifications (ground school, flight test etc). Thanks for watching my videos & happy landings, Guido

Great flight! I have a question: What is the exact reason for saying "ready for departure" instead of "ready for takeoff"? I was also told to do that but I didn't know why. And how about if I am doing a traffic pattern at the airport? Do I still say "ready for departure"? But technically I am not departing the airport..... Thank you.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 9 жыл бұрын
Thank you Kendrew! This has evolved from studies about the psychological behavior of pilots. Sometimes we assume to have heard things just because we expect or like them to hear. Example: If you are holding short of the runway, your brain can trick you that the next thing the tower says to you must be "cleared for take off". A take off is obviously very critical, once you accelerate it is hard to stop if, for example, another aircraft crosses your runway etc. We want to make sure that you are only cleared for take off if you actually hear the phrase TAKE OFF. The phrase TAKE OFF is exclusively reserved for receiving a take off clearance and for the pilot to read the take off clearance back. NOTHING ELSE! So you are ready for departure, not ready for take off. You may think now this is a bit over the top and too academic. No it is not. Imagine a stressed out pilot who sits in a hot aircraft in the sun or an airline captain who needs to take off because otherwise he/she would run out of duty time...you may be mentally already in a "take off" mood. A very tragic example was the collision of 2 B747's on the runway at Tenerife, Spain. One pilot clearly took off without a take off clearance. They got only their ATC clearance for the departure, but never cleared for TAKE OFF. It was dense fog, so neither pilots or the tower could see each other. The Captain was very anxious to go and thought they had been cleared already for take off. This accident triggered stricter radio communication procedures. Also the communication and team work in the cockpit (CRM crew resource management) was improved. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenerife_airport_disaster Please take this seriously, irrespective what other pilots may say to you. It can save lives. Happy Landings, Guido

Quick question... I am starting flight school soon, and due to small hearing loss in my left ear from when I was younger, I am very conscious of protecting my ears. Is hearing loss a concern for pilots? I'm sure you have logged thousands of hours... Have the voices in headphones of ATC caused you any trouble throughout the years?

I have flown fixed pitch propeller airplanes 30 years ago. Guido, I have two questions for you. Do you set take off power and landing power using the N1 gauge followed by air speed? I heard engine spool up time has gotten a few pilots into serious trouble by having a low power setting upon landing. Is there a minimum power setting for each landing based on weight, temperature, pressure, wind, and field length? Thanks for taking your time to answer my questions.
@GuidoWarnecke

+Wayne Hairston Hi Wayne, take off power is set by a table considering aircraft weight, pressure altitude and temperature. On landing, you can use any power you want to fly a safe approach. Older engines had a slow acceleration time from low rpm, this is not the case anymore. This is however aircraft specific, so I cannot answer this for all aircraft. In the Citation V: The minimum engine rpm in flight is kept relatively high, this is why it is called in the Citation V "flight idle". In this aircraft around 52%. This ensurers good engine response. After touch down (and an 8 second timer) the engine spools down to "ground idle", approx 46%. This ensures that the thrust on the ground is not too high and brakes do not wear out because the airplane will taxi too fast. Happy Landings, Guido

Very skilled! You make it look easy. I was curious, when you are in taxi mode, it appeared the Yoke was steering it self and guiding you to where you needed to be. How is this so? Please realize my knowledge is limited to R/C helicopters! : ) Have a good day, sir.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 9 жыл бұрын
Thank you Harold. Flying is team work, so I will pass your comment on to the other pilot. The yoke moving: this aircraft has a connection between the rudders and ailerons. This is to facilitate turns in flight (google adverse yaw). It basically eliminates the need to use rudders in a flight turn. We steer on the ground with the rudder pedals which are connected to the nose wheel. Hence every time I push a rudder pedal for steering, the yoke "magically" moves. It is not a rigid connection, there is a spring built in so it can be easily override. Happy Landings, Guido PS: I tried to "fly" an R/C helicopter on a simulator program - now THAT IS DIFFICULT!

Point taken - no excuse. We must have been overconfident because we listened to ATC all the time. Nevertheless, pilots make mistakes, ATC makes mistakes, always "look" before crossing an active runway. You are 100% correct. Runway 35 is very confined in a valley, difficult to see traffic. I think the challenges in flying never stop. But if I remember what I found the most challenging was my first instrument rating. The steering of this aircraft is conventional with the rudder pedals. Differential braking is used when yo have to start a turn with the aircraft in the parked position. In the USA, a lot of routes are still VOR to VOR although shortcuts may be given to RNAV capable aircraft (with GPS). Guido, I have two questions for you. Question number one: is the PIC normally chosen based upon most flying time or the one with most experience in the plane in which you are flying? Or could it be if you have the same amount of experience (it could happen I guess) that you might rotate with each flight being PIC? Question number two: have you ever had the privilege of flying the 787-9 or Air Bus A380? I think they're both wonderful aircraft. In my opinion of course however I'm looking at those aircraft from a civilian standpoint going oh and ah, as I have not started my training just yet and don't understand the industry. Fly safe, Damen
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Damen. PIC: if there are 2 equally qualified captains on board, we alternate the OIC from day to day. This is not a typical situation. Normally you want to pair an experienced Captain with a lesser experienced First Officer order to give him/here a chance to learn and enhance the flying skills. The PIC can sit on the right or left seat does not matter. However,the PIC must be determined before the flight. He signs also the paperwork. There are some legal requirements to become a PIC, especially in part 135 (charter flight) operations. You have to pass a PIC checkride. Also for type ratings sometimes PIC or SIC ratings are issued. While both crew members carry responsibilities, the PIC is the final authority on board and would be also penalized harsher in case of any violations, incidents etc. With regard to you question to 787-9 etc. I am the wrong guy as I do not fly these kind of aircraft. Happy Landings, Guido

Interesting video. I'm a pilot in training. I take my PAR in two weeks. Any tips for me? Also what does yaw damper mean?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Sorry for late reply. I hope you passed your PAR with flying colors. Yaw damper: larger aircraft tend to have a roll/yaw instability (google "dutch roll"). The yaw damper detects this movements and steers the rudder accordingly. It is mostly a passenger comfort thing, but larger jets have operating limitations if the yaw damper does not work. Thank you! The movement of the yokes: This aircraft has a cable connection of the rudders and the ailerons. This facilitates turns in flight (google "adverse yaw"). It is not a rigid connection, there is a spring in it, so you won't feel it while flying. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adverse_yaw We steer the nose wheel on the ground with the ruder pedals (can't be seen in the video). Ryan, in the Citation Jet, the rudder and ailerons are connected by a cable. This makes turns in flight easier to fly.
