Answer to the question "why are the hands not on the throttles during take off and climb out"? In a jet we use a different system compared to single engine aircraft. Up the the decision speed on take off (V1) the hands are on he throttles to pull back in the event of a malfunction. Beyond that speed, there would be not enough runway available to stop on the ground. So the hands go off the throttles to overcome the temptation to still want to "pull back" at a too high speed. To avoid the throttles from creeping back (the reason why some flight instructors tech to keep the hand on the throttle), there is a friction lock. Happy Landings, Guido

My old company taught hands-off at V1, but right back on once airborne. We did a LOT of reduced thrust takeoffs and in the event of an engine failure, you could quickly add thrust if desired/required. Plus, in GENERAL, we were also taught that being the PF meant one hand on the controls, feet on the rudders, and the other hand on the throttles. Technique.

Guido! Wonderful to see a new video, thank you! I am now in the midst of my IFR ground school, so this is a wonderful addition to my study. Question: on final, just as Mike is making the CTAF call, his CDI snaps from full-scale left to centered. What caused that?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. best of luck for your IFR training! This Citation has no switch to display a GPS on the co-pilot's side HSI. I assume there was another VOR tunes in (most likely COL). May be the signal got lost near the ground and then the CDI snaps to center. The red flag comes up, but is not visible in the video. Have a look, may be you spot th red flag. In aircraft that have a NAV/GPS selector switch for the HSI it is a common error for pilots to set the switch in the wrong position. You want to fly an ILS and have the switch in GPS. For ILS approaches, some switches are protected. They go automatically in the NAV position one a localizer frequency is tuned in. Well spotted, Mike! Happy Landings, Guido

Great videos. You both work well together. Like to see the teamwork. And I liked seeing Mike make some radio mistakes. So many new pilots are afraid of saying the wrong thing on the radio, so they make more mistakes due to their own anxiety. But everyone is human and makes mistakes. Just make sure to correct yourself when you make a mistake. Keep the IFR videos coming!

Have you ever though of getting an ND filter for the GoPro? It'd lower the shutter speed of the GoPro so you can see the Display Screens!
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
I thought about that,.; The problem I see is that the shutter speed must not only be lowered, it has to be synchronized with the frame refresh rate of the CRT screens. No idea how to do that. I will check this out on one of the next videos. Happy Landings, Guido
@Aviation101
@Aviation101 10 жыл бұрын
Ohhh good point! I know if you get a dark enough filter, you can lower the speed enough to where syncing wont matter. I'm sure those screens are 60Hz? So if you get your shutter speed down to below 1/60th, that outta do. But anyways, great videos!

Hi Niklas, in the C560 the rudder and ailerons are connect to minimize adverse yaw in flight (google). Nose wheel steering on the ground is done with the rudder pedals, hence every time I steer with the pedals, the ailerons "magically" move. As simple as that. Thanks for the great videos! I am somewhat curious about the cancelation of IFR when landing is assured. If you had to go around after canceling (i.e. if a deer were to jump onto the runway) and ended up back "in the soup" would you obtain a new IFR clearance from approach? PK

Question Guido: Cancelling IFR with low ceiling what would ya do if say a deer or something made you over shoot unexpected. Would ya be able to do a low level circuit? I just thought you never cancel IFR unless you have at least 1000ft ceiling. -- Great Video by the way, thank you for the ride. (y)
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
This requires good judgement. If the weather is above circling minimums, you could do a circling maneuver. otherwise fly the published missed approach and immediately contact ATC. Circling can be flown (depending n speed) as low as 400 ft AGL. You should only cancel if "landing is assured". But if that deer shows up just at that moment...bad luck. Great video as always! That approach gets you down pretty low for being a LNAV! Question though- I notice you do it, and when I rode with a buddy in a C500 he did it to-- and that's holding the yoke back quite a bit on initial takeoff roll, then relaxing it to normal until Vr. Also, on landing, when TR's are deployed, most push on the yoke. Why exactly is this? Thanks! Caleb
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Caleb, this depends on the aircraft model. When you deploy the TR's on landing and the engines are mounted high, they produce a thrust vector that also pulls the tail of the aircraft down, meaning the nose wheel comes of the ground. This is why it is advisable to push on the yoke when applying full reverse. Not so much required when you use only idle power on reverse. Pushing down the yoke also gets more weight on the nose wheel and better directional control on the landing roll out. This video shows a landing on a C501, where I push quite pronounced on the yoke: C501 landing in 60 knots winds at Stornoway EGPO! Happy Landings, Guido

Great video, Thanks. I did see one gotcha though. The PM in his zeal to give the pilot report that the controller asked him to provide actually set himself up for a bust. He reported breaking out at 700 feet and then cancelled his IFR clearance while still technically in IMC conditions (700 ft ceiling). Silly technicality but I've read about pilots getting busted on this.

Hi Joe, you have a good point here. This was class G airspace and day time, so it is only 1 mile visibility and clear of clouds required. If it is sensible to cancel IFR - this is up for a professional debate. Happy Landings in 2015, Guido

Thank you very much! I am only focused during tasks in the cockpit - not scared. So the heart rate should be quite normal... Thanks for watching my videos & happy landings, Guido PS: you are a non-pilot. May be you want to start your pilot's license? Go to an airport, they offer very inexpensive introduction flights. Miss your videos Guido! You inspired me to make my own IFR videos (Of course not as good as yours! Check out my channel and give me some tips!) What would be a good transition plane before getting into a Citation, Phenom or Mustang? Something like a Cessna TTx or a Cirrus SR22 GTX to get used to the avionics, high altitudes and speed?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 9 жыл бұрын
+Sushee Perumal Thank you! I will check your channel. Small jets are very easy to fly. The most common challenge for pilots stepping up from piston airaft is the speed (also climb and descent rates) and the management of the avionics. A Cirrus can be a good step in learning to manage both those things. In the web, for AOPA for example, you fins good articles around "transitioning to jets". Best of luck for your flying career & happy landings, Guido

You have a good point here, Richard. I explained why we omitted the check, there is no instrument approach from this runway and weather was IMC. Good morning Guido. I really enjoy your videos. I've been watching one right after the other for the past hour or so. They are extremely interesting and informative. I am a non-current private pilot and am finally in a position to get to flying again. I'm not instrument rated, but I do have a question about your approach. I believe you stated that the airport was below minimums (so you expected no VFR traffic) yet you cancelled IFR on the approach. Would this not put you in a precarious position given that technically the airport is below VFR minimums? How would you handle a missed approach in this case?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I hope you get your currency back again soon. The cancellation of IFR: this airport does not have a tower. The tower would reported an aircraft landed to ATC as "safe on the ground", allowing the approach controller for the next aircraft to initiate the approach. Sometimes it is difficult to radio to ATC after landing and call "safe on the ground", there might be no reception. This is why we cancelled IFR in the air and continued the approach visually. This requires good thinking, because on a possible go around we would not be able to maintain VFR. I hope this explains it. Thank you for watching my videos in such great detail & happy landings, Guido
@mslman71
@mslman71 10 жыл бұрын
Guido Warnecke Guido, thanks for the quick reply. This seems to me like a practical solution to a situation where it is probably not technically correct to do so (unless I'm missing something in the regs), because even on short final with IFR cancelled you are still not able to maintain VFR (missed or not). I wonder if in this case you could run afoul of an official should he be in a particularly nasty mood and hanging out at this non-towered airport. I certainly don't mean to be argumentative only generally curious about that blurred line that exists between regulation and reality. That is, I'd say it's a largely academic exercise. Either way I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. Your cool and methodical approach to managing the aircraft and crew is definitely worth emulating.

Guido Warnecke Hi Mr. Guido, I really love your videos, I am curently studying for commercial license and your videos are really inspiring me. I have a question, as you mentioned once cancelled IFR, you could not maintain VFR, than my point is, if perhaps you would be in go-around, what happens then? Would you quickly make an AFIL for the return to approach/alternate airport? Thank you for your answer.

Another Great video Guido!!! Thanks for bringing us along and pls keep'em coming!! Roughly what is your touch down speed in the Citation on this flight?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The touchdown speed is calculated for the weight. We touch down at Vref, a speed 30% above the stall speed for the actual weight. This is different to a light aicraft e.g. a C172 which you "hold" until a stall occurs (stall warning starts to beep). In this flight - at max landing weight - the speed was 106 knots. Great video as always, just curious, the trim wheel seems to be moving on its own around 20:15, I assume the AP was off and neither pilot had a finger on the trim switch, just curious why it was moving.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 жыл бұрын
Well spotted! The Citation V has an auto-trim system coupled to the flap motor. When we move the flaps from 15 to 35 degrees, the trim is actuated when the flaps go through 20-30 degrees. This eliminates the trim changes that would normally be required when setting flaps. When we retracted the flaps after landing, the same auto-trim is activated, only in the other direction. Thanks for watching my videos & happy landings, Guido PS: although I understand and respect the anonymity of the web, I would appreciate if you could write your comment with your clear name - it's just more personal. Thank you, Scott. The cockpit is ok once you are seated, getting in and out is a bit cramped (or I should loose weight...). The pilot seats are not really comfortable. This aircraft is designed for the passengers, not so much for the pilots. Flights are short though, never above 5 hours, typically 2 hours. So no problem. Happy Landings, Guido
