I have one of these Starfires. Fortunately, it is in very good shape and does not need repair. I first saw a Starfire played by Dave Davies of The Kinks on Hullabaloo in the mid 1960's. Many years later, when I saw mine hanging on the wall of a local guitar store, I bought it on the spot!

A buddy of mine owns a 1966 Oldsmobile Starfire in the same exact color.... this guitar would look great on the parcel shelf 😀

I really enjoyed your video - I did a very similar job on a 1972 double cut Starfire ( think 335 style ) , and it's now my favourite squeeze. I look forward to seeing the next installment 😃

Man you're correct,there is'nt any videos of the guild starfire neck resets. I needed to see this! I have a '61 Starfire 3 on the bench (dinning room table) now repairing all kinds of damage. No frets or binding on the neck. Wood busted out of the sides of tbe neck where the binding would go. It's originally an Amber but someone painted it red. Burn through's on the veneer's where it was sanded. A pickup needs rewound. Man! I may need to give you a call!😊🎸

Thanks for sharing those photos at the end. Uncle Larry has some high praise for these guitars. Definitely worth the time and cost to bring it back to life.

I always think of Greg Brown playing the riff from “Going the distance “ when I see an old Starfire. Definitely underrated guitars imo

Yep, Greg was Cake's original guitarist, and his main guitar was a 1965 Guild Starfire III, exactly like the guitar you're working on. Wow she saw Cake last nite? What a weird coincidence lol. I really enjoy your videos brother, you do beautiful work. My 68 Hummingbird is ready for a neck re-set & I'm pretty sure it also has a brace starting to work itself loose- as certain low notes will have a hint of a buzz. I'd also like the bridge pad replaced or overlaid with maple or rosewood & have the bridge slotted so I can use non-slotted pins. I'd love for you to do the work. I'm a ways from Nashville though- all way up in Washington. Do you take in guitars from out of town?

I think of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead’s first album.

I love these guitars - they bring up raw, chimey guitars - Kinks, Cake, The Spinanes, but are expressive enough for space rock and even jazz - Jim Hall used one of these pickups in his guitars for years.

They had lots of leftover tags, and used them until they ran out in perhaps ‘69 or ‘70.

Jerry Garcia played one briefly, in 66 or ‘67.

Are those tuning pegs original? Can’t see any other holes (plugged or not). I have a ‘71 F-112 with similar cheap looking pegs; makes me think those could be original?
@harpethguitar
@harpethguitar Жыл бұрын
I think so , yes, they looked original
@rubercoober
@rubercoober Жыл бұрын
Yeah, those are original. Guild cheaped out with import tuners in the later 60s, these and the crappy import strip tuners are both pretty common for this era.
@llmontyll
@llmontyll Жыл бұрын
Yes, I understand they were original and common starting in '66 vs. Grovers up to at least '65. Volutes were also added around this time.
@vayabroder729
@vayabroder729 Жыл бұрын
@@rubercoober Gibson was on that bandwagon too; look at the cheap strip tuners on late ‘60’s SG Specials: almost the same type. Which is why many got switched over to Grovers and Schallers back then. Pete Townshend with The Who switched them to Schallers.
