It's not like they are giving you a super hot deal. Just Like WOW gave you all the Previous Expansions Free. This is the normal for all games to do as no one is going to purchase each and every expansion and all of your older expansions are worth less now after so much time has past.

it`s not the question which expansion to buy, it`s only the question when can I buy both - no doubt, if you like the F2P version of GW2 and you want to stay in the game the two expansions will become a must-have, first HoT and than PoF or both together as a bundle, there`s nothing to think or discuss about it, it`s the same with other popular games and their available expansions, if you like the game and you want to carry on you`ve to get the expansions, end of discussion, it`s as simple as that :D ....and we all don`t have to sell the car, the house or rob a bank to get the money to buy these expansions, on the other side if you have a family and/or friends put these expansions on your wish list for your birthday or for christmas for instance I`ve started the game when there was no F2P version and I`ve bought HoT + PoF because IMO GW2 is worth it, you get so much interesting content and you need both expansions to get the best out of it and out of your characters, to get the Revenant, both elite specs for each character/class, every achievment, the glider, the mounts (best I`ve seen so far), a lot of free extra maps and so on, the game has so much more to offer than the jungle or the desert, there are map events on nearly every map (see event or boss timers in the internet), there is PvP and WvW, two sections totally different to the rest of the game with their own special play style and their own fan community - paying money for these expansions is the only real money you`ve to spent to be successful in the game because GW2 is not P2W - tbh I wouldn`t be happy with the limitations of the F2P version in case I like this game, that`s only the start of a big adventure and of one of the best MMOs on the market not only because of the mounts or the unique combat system

First go to lvl 80 as f2p and try pvp and group content on that tier. One can actually do a lot. If you want pvp f2p tier is sufficient to have a lot of fun.

If you are looking at this game as a new player or a returning player, get both packs. It is WELL worth the money. I am one of the casual but dedicated players in the game. The amount of new content from maps to mounts to just a ton of new monsters to fight! Hope it helps!

I'd say if you can only afford one, get path of fire, that way you will not only get the mounts, maps, specs and all, but you will also get the next batch of living world maps as they roll out for free with the purchase.

As a f2p players for more than 4 years, I would recommend buying the expansions asap if you are f2p who wants to buy expansion. It's very time consuming and hard to earn gold without trading post and mounts to help travel through terrains. Also you can forget about levelling disciplines since you need a bunch of materials and without trading you won't get any near even 100 levels.

Both GW2 veterans and newcomers seem to think that GW2 without mounts is terrible even though the game has been great without mounts for many years. We've been spoiled with the mounts but I don't blame Arenanet, the mounts are great, but it is kinda sad that having mounts from the start is just expected now.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the Specializations (Reaper mostly), Heart of Thorns would be useless, in my opinion (Meguuma is torture). But mounts change everything and Path of Fire's spes are good too so, I would say it's PoF or nothing. So maybe keep the vanilla game until you get bored or aren't surprised by anything anymore then get PoF and if you still want more, HoT. (Edit : it's the opinion of a chill player, some may prefer HoT maps and events or don't like the mount concept which makes exploration way easier)

New players dont misconfuse Demo and full game with f2p and p2w As someone who had 500 hours as a f2p, i can tell you that it gets boring after like 200 300 hours, because when you decide to go for something greater and see that what takes you 20 hours of farming and 120g for paid players its just 60g and no farming, or if youre thirsty for pvp wvw you will be outclassed 70% of the time, and you cant even do Raids even if you wanted to. So its fun as long as youre learning, once you learn the basics you need an expansion to improve, otherwise youll be outdated outclassed and way behind in basically everything.

tbh buying the expansions is a good move you get access to moutns (running might be fun at first but it becomes tiring after couple hours of playing) you get access to glider (bye bye fall damage) you can access to areas which are level locked (like lion's arch, the story quests won't take you to lvl 30 to enter this zone To continue the story, you have to do some farming to reach the level) you get more bank space (trust me, you will need it, stuff will start stacking and you'll have nowhere to save them unless you sell some to save some space) you get your hands on more content because why not but most importantly (imho) are the mounts, makes life easier you can still rent some mounts in certain areas for 1 silver per hour but once you dismount, you have to go all the way back to the npc to have the mount again (you don't pay it again until the one hour passes) which is tedious thing to do, and you can't take it with you to other zones. if you touch deep water you dismount, if you do any mount ability you dismount, if it takes too much dmg you dismount. It's not the greatest thing but i can be a bit of help. So getting one through expansion is better and really worth it (you get HoT for free when you buy the PoF)

For the map of HoT, there are more then 4 new maps after new season released, but you need to play the story line of new seasons to get into the new maps. It is a little bit inconvenient, especially the map-unlocking of each character is independent. If you only want to buy 1 expansion, buy the PoF first. Bc if you play Hot without mount, you might lost your interests very soon. The difficulty of HoT is really high and not kind to solo player who is collecting Hero Point alone. Not only the HP is deadly hard itself but also the process you trying to get a HP is a deadly challenge too. If you play HoT with mount, that would help a lot and then you can really enjoy the beautiful maps. To the profession, in my personal preference, Revenant: PoF > HoT Mesmer: PoF = HOT > Free Necromancer: PoF > HOT > Free Thief: PoF > HOT > Free Engineer: PoF > HOT > Free Guardian: HOT> PoF > Free (but PoF ver. is good too, I just prefer longbow a little bit more....) Elementalist: HOT > PoF > Free Warrior: HoT > Free.... really no interest to play the PoF ver. so I don't know ;p

I think HoT story is superior to PoF story by far.. Mostly because of the Sylvari twist. But this Living World Story season, that is currently in progress and which is placed after PoF is the best LWS season and maybe even better than the DLC stories. But that's just matter of taste..=D

Path of fire has fun and useful content, and mounts are a game changer Heart of thorns is horribly tuned and frustrating to solo (which you will be doing since a small percentage of the already dwindling player base spend any amount of time in there)

If you are wondering, here is my honest opinion - I played on a seperate account for years, but took regular breaks and only played once or twice every year, taking breaks in between. In 2017, I made a new account, and got two characters to level 80. Since many things were locked, I did things like fractals, but wanted to do raids, which is why I needed an expansion pack. If you are going to buy one, *BUY BOTH*. I currently only have HoT, only buying it as I didnt have enough money, however I shouldve waited till I had the money to buy both. I got an easy 300-400 hours off the F2P game, as I played very casually for a couple years, but only really started playing around the start of 2019. Overall, buy both if you want to stop playing F2P, but if you dont have the money or dont want to buy anything, just keep going F2P. You miss out on some things like raids, the stories and new maps, etc. I found myself enjoying Fractals greatly while still being free to play.

pay for the expansions, they aren't expensive and you get MORE content than what most AAA games are pumping out. Personally i wish that GW2 would adopt a more frequent expansion release schedule ala ESO and WoW. i feel that while the Living World seasons are great (which i haven't reached yet) i have heard alot of the same concerns that it isn't enough content to keep people playing. i love the game and i'm just getting started so i have ALOT to do lol.

I do agree. I hoped for more expansions in a shorter period of time. Guild Wars 1 used to pump out an expansion every 6 - 12 months. Those were amazing! Living World Story is great but yeah, the replayability of the story and the map is rather low. Look at the HoT maps. They are still well populated to this day. LS maps tend to slowly decline in players over the months. However, if you really want to participate in a meta events on those maps, you should not run into too much trouble. Just did the Thunderhead Peaks meta event. Still super populated!

Living World is enought content for people like me (doing story, then maybe some achivments but slowly). Constant expansions would mean lowering their quality. If we look closely every expansion in GW2 gives something big - HoT new class and gliding - PoF mounts. What does expansions in other games do? Gives new map? Rise lvl cap making all your gear worthless? Since GW2 developers decided they won't rise lvl cap past 80, they need something different. It demands time to do so. PS LS2 maps metas are often densly populated, LS3 and LS4 same. I never ran into empty map in afternoon. PoF maps on other hand - well it happens.

The main reason why they did this with PoF and LS4 and the next LS5 was because at that time a good majority of the people who worked on GW2 and HoT + LS3 were moved to side-projects, these however failed in the eyes of NCSoft which is the reason why there were layoffs in the first place (it's not their fault though, the "heads" in ArenaNet basically "forced" them to work out of GW2). Basically GW2 was about to go on semi-maintenance mode after PoF for like 3-4 years with Living Story updates, this however might no longer be the case since some of the people who worked on these side-projects are back to work into GW2. That said I expect a 3rd expansion maybe on 2020 or 2021, after that I think the game will definitely end and they'll work on GW3 instead.

You can also craft a Legendary weapons that were available at lunch as a free2play account which adds another tons of hours to your free to play game. However, its a grindy but its a content you can do while waiting for sales for expansions :) I own all the expansion but I always get scared by the amount of content tha I go to play some singleplayer game xD

I played free to play for a while and while enjoyable too, both expansions add alot more content especialy if you like the story of gw2 i would suggest getting both. Alot of the reasoning is also because of things like elite specs revenant new goals to work towards that you cant witout expansions such as certain legendary gear, raids and alot of other stuff. also mounts made completing maps alot more enjoyable for me because its faster to get from area to area and also easier to grab some of the vistas. And thats about my two cents on it, if you like the game as f2p you will love the expansions. Keep up the good work Kyosika !

I love how Tangled Depths is a con for HoT. Just "Tangled Depths". I've been trying to do map completion for TD. It's the worst map ever and I'm not even a new player. I hate it.

In my opinion, I had the most existential crisis between HoT and PoF, but I just picked the HoT because the elite specialization (more because the Cronomancer \(≧∇≦)/ ) are better than PoF. After 2 years I picked the PoF

I tried a f2p acc, and it is so bad compared to an upgraded account. Definitely go for an expansion, preferably both when they are on sale, since they both give pretty cool stuff. Altough if i had to reccomend one id say go for path of fire, because of mounts and a better story imo + it is easily done solo, unlike hot which is pretty hard to solo for newer players. Heart of Thorns has cooler maps, metas, and better masteries in my opinion

Thanks for the great review! I just started playing GW2 and steam sale is about to end in a couple of hours. I don't think I can hit lvl 80 right away; my concern is would I have access to new skills or builds if I buy the expansion now as I level to max? Or, the new skills/masteries/builds (not sure if I got the term correct) is just accessible after doing some quest starting at lvl 80 and thus, a need to buy the expansion arise? Tbh, I'd like to buy it now since I always have hard time rebinding skills or something like that. I honestly don't want to experience drastic change of my skills and keybinds at max level where I have to relearn my character all over again due to the new specializations(?)/skills. On the other hand, if I bought it now, and if new skills/specialization is not accessible until I reach lvl 80, I might just buy the expansion on the next steam sale, which is, damn, next summer again. If you get the expansion, you will just start at level 1. If you use your level 80 booster you can get up to 80 without any effort. If you want to get into the game, I'd say, play the core game first with or without the expansion. If you are level 80 and beat the story of the original game, move on to the expansions!

Great vídeo. I installed the game last night and I'm giving elementalist a try. I play Neverwinter as my main MMO but as it's not in a great shape right now (and the devs are working hard to make it worse, apparently) I'm looking for some other soul-eating grind. Are healers needed in the game? Or are there any healer classes at all? Ty.

In end game content there are always healers. It's usually in the form of a Ranger (Druid - You need the expansion). It's not as grindy as other MMO's though :)

I used to play GW2 and stopped a little before the release of HoT. I just got back and started from the beginning to be sure not to miss anything. I remember that before HoT there had been a huge deal of storyline leading to HoT story. So my question is how big is the story of living world season 3?Do we need it to unerstand PoF storyline?

Don't worry! What are you a charr, human, asura or something else? There are some great armor combinations out there. Have a look at gw2style.com/ or the official Reddit? There might be something for you there!

I'm certainly a bit late to this video but I really appreciate it! Thinking about giving the game a go, see how far I get and if I end up enjoying it, I'll definitely buy the expansions when I've got the spare cash. That being said, is there the prospect of a new expansion coming out soon and if so, should I wait until it gets cut down in price or bundled in with the other expansions?

Hey! Thanks for your comment! Glad you've enjoyed it! The expansion will most likely launch in Q3 of 2021. But that is just my guess. I think you can safely buy the expansion bundle now. It will take a while before the new Expanion, End of Dragons, will be reduced in price.

You need at least one character at level 80 to unlock the mounts on the pof maps. Once you recieved them you can use them on any character at any level! I really recommend buying hot + pof, they are both absolutely worth it!

Standard edition should do! You get both expansion for the price of one. You can pick up the more expansive versions if you want more cosmetics but that's up to you. Can a f2p account buy the digital deluxe upgrade from the gem store? It's a little pricey but it could be a way to remove the restrictions without committing to an expac... Also you can still find physical copies of the Heroic Edition on like eBay. THAT is the authentic release experience lol

Im f2p player, the answer is: YES, u need expansion. TP restriction is the worst, all of core spec is boring without elite spec (imo), small inventory bags, cant convert golds to gems, and some crafting materials are locked behind expac. I prefer hot because i like most elite spec it offers+access to LS3 maps. The only thing i like from pof is mount (a must for meta farm if you use spec that doesnt have speed boons/blink)

If you want to buy ALL expansions for the lowest price possible you'll have to wait a few years. The Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire expansions are now bundled into one. So for about 30-40 dollars you have access to both expansions. End of Dragons will be the price of a full game. If you enjoy the game, it's best to buy both expansions now. You can play through them for a bit before End of Dragons comes out :)

As a free to play player you only have access to a limited amount of builds. With the expansion you can turn your ranger into a Druid and support your allies as well. I think that if you only play PvP the expansions do add value but not as much. If you play PvE as well, then yes, get the expansions 100%

Most people seem to agree that expansions are totally worth the money but it's best to wait and not buy them until you've reached the end of the core game first. It's best to not skip story or leveling and there is no reason to get the expansions before you know you want more. :)
