I hope they will start development 2-3+ years from now. Otherwise, ANet might run into a problem, where they will spent two years on something (engine, assets, etc) only to find out that there are new tool, that can do the same.. but in matter of 3 months.

Extrapolating from that timeline, they're so early in the pre-production process right now that its unlikely there is anything interesting to see for anyone outside the studio. MMOs tend to take several years, like 5 at the minimum, to get released. I saw the open jobs on the Arenanet site and they're hiring for lead roles etc. - this means they're assembling a core team, they might have a rough gameplay prototype or something and some concept art on their walls - meaning nothing is done yet and they're still figuring out direction with GW3. It feels pretty obvious with Secrets of the Obscure that they're stretched rather thin and are concentrating their efforts on another project right now though. GW3 might be 6 years away from a release. For me, I am happy anyone is still working on a new MMO these days. We don't really have anything decent except GW2, FF14 and WoW and even that's debatable. Fresh wind with new gameplay concepts and all the great graphics that are possible by now is definitely needed. Although I find that GW2 has great gameplay, but it's starting to feel stunted by it's engine/dev power. It's poorly optimized and probably one of the major reasons they can't build cool new shit with it. Like isn't it just the GW1 engine with a few tuned things on top? That's about 20 years old at it's core. We all know how much has happened since then...

One positive to think about is it may not take the typical amount of time an MMO development cycle usually does if they're building it on UE5 and utilizing some new AI tech. UE5 also guarantees not just great visuals but solid optimization too. Definitely something to look forward to if it's in the works. Personally I'm skeptical but I also can't disagree that they're clearly spread thin based on the current expansion. Either the studio is tiny now or the majority of its resources are focused on something bigger.

I feel like it currently is not a safe bet to utilize it. There is some potential it speeds up some aspects of their work (concept art, grunt dev work, some story/lore) that they can use as a starting point to refine and correct. But if you want to deliver quality work you still have to rework everything any current AI puts out by a respective professional, making the time save smaller than most people think. AI has a lot of buzzwords around it. It's not the sentient almighty savior some people think it is.

GW3 has probably been in development since the release of End of Dragons if not earlier based on the slowdown in content. Would not be surprised to see a release in 3 year's time. Regarding Anet hiring lead roles. Leads frequently leave and need to be replaced and though internal promotions do happen, the preference of Anet is to bring in outside talent, since they don't want to remove a productive team member from their current role. Hiring a lead is not a sign they are building new teams.

Whatever it is, I imagine they want it to be played on consoles too like FFXIV as that's a big market they can't tap into with GW1 OR GW2 and probably why they want to use Unreal Engine (though that could just be because using an existing good engine is cheaping and easier than making your own). Maybe even mobile, but I can't see them going the route of something like Genshin Impact. I suppose they could, even though something like Guild Wars 1 with a summonable henchmen system makes more sense on mobile to me. I'll support them regardless. I like ANet and this game is 5+ probably close to 6-8 years out unless they are doing something weird like porting GW2 to a new engine which I suppose is posisble, so GW2 will get at least 3-4 more mini-xpacs I imagine and honestly I don't care about other MMOs. lol I LIKE GW2s non-gear grind end game.

Their using UE5 could be also due to NCSoft using it in their projects, i.e Throne & Liberty and others. They wouldn't be learning the engine from scratch. Additionally there is this new trend on using UE5 for future mmo due to it's easy optimization thanks to nanite/lumen and not sacrificing graphics in the process. But learning new engine, make internal tooling for it, workflows etc. will still take a lot of time, so I presume new game is maybe at best 2027 sadly, and even that is far fetched if they are creating everything from scratch.

Putting aside the issue of abandoning 10+ years of account progress, there's much opportunity in wiping the slate clean. I'm sure that if presented with a clean slate, ArenaNet would design a much better game that avoids many of the issues GW2 launched with or accumulated over the years, that are too deep to go back and fix. But I've no confidence that ArenaNet's views on design and lack of patience for sticking with established design has changed, and that's ultimately what caused many of these issues. As for account progress, GW1 barely had any so I don't think that comparison really helps. The better comparison is to people leaving GW2 and starting a fresh account in another game. I just returned from a ~3 year break since Champions and I never missed the combat, the story, the characters, the builds, anything like that. Well, perhaps the mounts. I'm excited for a Guild Wars 3 same as I was excited for a Guild Wars 2. It's notorious how hard it is to develop and add certain things in GW2 due to spaghetti code and how old the engine is so for this reason alone I think getting a GW3 is exciting. Now I certainly understand people feeling their game is getting abandoned and all the worries that come with it, I lived those to an extent with GW1 when 2 was announced but 17 years later and I still play GW semi-regularly along with GW2. Sure we might not get new stuff but the game is still here and even though the community has considerably shrunk there is still a die hard core fanbase that keeps the game alive. Now granted GW2 is structured very differently and they'd have to get pretty creative to make GW2 playable mostly solo like GW1 is now due to world events, no henchmen or heroes for instanced content, etc... In that same breath though in the last extra-life stream Arenanet did, Colin (I think) mentionned how stopping development on GW1 was a mistake as the two games are so different they could have coexisted and continued development on both... Maybe they learned from their mistakes and will do just that with 2 and 3, even if content for 2 would probably be smaller in scope. Heck I'm getting into hopium territory now but imagine if they also released a GW1 remake, we could have all 3 games running at the same time with different takes on gameplay and the world of Tyria.

I would love some RPG style games set in Tyria. It is such a rich setting that quite frankly is often limited by its aversion to a traditional questing approach. I understand that GW2 is built around Events and they work well for what GW2 aims to do, but the janky AP pseudo questing system is evidence enough that even Arenanet is craving more. A standard RPG in Tyria, built in Unreal Engine and so much more accessible to some of their newer talent would perfectly complement GW2. It would expand the GW community with a large portion of GW2's playerbase ready to jump in and once people finish that game and crave more, where do they go? GW2, which both helps player numbers and aids Arenanet massively because ultimately an MMO will always be more monetisable than a single player RPG.

Part of me really wants a GW3 but I know it won't be anything like GW1 despite that being a huge open niche in the market that they could exploit. I have had a few private discussions with Anet devs about this in the past. Understandably they were a bit vague with me, so take this with a grain of salt: The impression I get is that they have been working on a successor to GW2 for a very long time, but that there has been a history of scrapping and restarting the project repeatedly in a chase for perfection - and that this may have been part of why they experienced the big layoffs a couple years ago. Assuming any of that is true, this "announcement" doesn't really feel like news at all - more of a "yes, investors, this studio is working on their next thing rather than stagnating" throwaway - and "working on" is a far cry from "releasing", in any case. I wouldn't lend it any weight until we hear something more definitive.

My friends and I have all stopped playing GW2 for a variety of reasons, yet every other MMO we try is not as smooth, rewarding, or as classy as Guild Wars. Crappy MMOs come out every year and die just as fast, and massive companies have tried forcing MMOs that just have no soul to them. I think the tech and gameplay they've designed for Guild Wars is a pretty perfect balance, just the game is old and bloated with conflicting content and ideas now. Fresh start please! (also, no flame, but their story has been trash for like a decade now)

1) I'm not too sure we should be taking this as a mistaken announcement, more 'rough plans for the future' and in that respect did we doubt GW3 was going to happen EVENTUALLY? 2) I'm convinced the project they're currently working on is not GW3. Makes sense to work on a different MMO (Horizon is bookies fav) then invest that money and expertise in GW3 5-7 years down the line. I think GW2 is here for the foreseeable. 3) ANET do need to get ahead of this, this story has already taken off at rocket's pace. 4) I'm all in no matter what. ANET as a company have shown me over the years that whatever they work on is worthy of my time. Looking forward to ANY announcement to be frank.

I got downvoted on Reddit just recently for stating Guild Wars 3 should/could already be in development, and now look at us. I've played Guild Wars since Prophecies, and have been on and off playing since GW2 launch. The game is good. The story, albeit cheesy and making some upsetting choices (#SaveEir), is good. The Lore is amazing. The world is beautiful. So why are people so hard against Guild Wars 3, letting the developers expand their tools, their art, and the games development. The engine has limitations, to say the least. From CPU limitations, to graphical ones. Although Guild Wars 2 is beautiful, from Cantha to Kryta, From Elona to the Northern reaches, it's only beautiful because of the Art Team. They are quite visibly held back. Other MMOs, and yes we must look to it's competition, are getting Graphical updates. And although I will be the first to admit "Graphics don't make the game", it does have a factor. And when your game looks dated (yet beautiful), and other games also look beautiful (but not as dated), people are drawn to the shinier thing. Guild Wars 2 has been slowly adjusting to maintenance mode for a while now, and the yearly expansions sort of lead towards it. It honestly feels like they introduce new content just to abandon it. Dungeons, Raids, etc. With Secrets, and the new expansions coming this year and next, we very well could be looking at a trilogy that leads up to a Guild Wars 3, or announcement. My Guess is that they'll announce Guild Wars 3 after the next expansion, and the final expansion will be that "bridge" for us, which then leads to Guild Wars 3 in 2026/2027. No matter how you cut it. The Devs probably don't want to work on an "upgraded" Guild Wars 1 engine anymore, and with UE5 and it's forward compatibility is probably very intriguing to them, let alone the tools for graphics, lighting, shading, rendering, sound design, etc... The list goes on. I think we'll see adjustments to allow Guild Wars 2 events, and such to be completed with smaller groups over the coming years, and then we'll slowly transition into Guild Wars 3.

WP Its not just Anet but MMO player mindset to abandon the older game as there is no point in grinding for something with no future. I get lots of people would find it hard at first but I really think we should just rip the bandaid off and embrace gw3 if it ever comes because it would be so healthy for the game. I know so many people who no longer play gw2 because it's very dated, and I can't get any of my friends to start playing gw2 with me because the graphics look so old that they feel the game will die soon and it just doesn't feel good/immersive to be in the world when it looks so bad and there's also so many bugs with the spaghetti code at this point. It would bring so much new interest and relevance to have a more modern guild wars game. IF trhey are making a GW3, then they would account link like they did for GW and GW2 and any legendaries would be transfered no doubt as they did with armours etc from GW to GW2. This still means that for instance, to get ALL the pets in GW2, if I remember rightly, 4 are only obtainable in GW. Imo? I wouldn't say it means abandoning your GW2 account as they would, I am sure, make it worhwhile doing all of them in some way if you want to and so can still get Legendaries etc, that could appear in some way in the next so negating the need to abandon GW2. HoM was part of the linking and even in the Achievements (HoM under General). I wouldn't worry everyone, you do not have to abandon GHW2 at all due to the above for a "GW3" if there will be one (probably will be), hence why there is still a following in GW as they are linked but just different eras. Like an ancestor character to the new ones, which I think it was supposed to be. It will be a while anyway and yes, this does create a new scenario, another 250 years jump or more with new tech? Please don't worry about the money you have spent in GW2, like GW, the stories are very much linked, tied together and far too much loved to not keep them running.

I’d also be interested if that’s just how they’re referring to a visual update (would be interesting timing since Final Fantasy 14 is currently doing one). I’d also be interested if it wasn’t an MMO but still uses the world. Overall though without proper information I find it hard to get too excited or panicked. I still enjoy GW2 and the slew of characters I’ve made there, and I’ve still got plenty of projects to work on since I’m not super fast either. As a BDO player I can confirm google translate does not handle korean well. However there's always a chance and the optimistic side of me has some hope. The new expansion model is much less ambitious than what they were doing before and it doesn't even release with all of the features at launch. That could definitely be a sign of being strapped for resources because they're being diverted to something much bigger. If its true and they don't have anything substantial to show I doubt ArenaNet will respond to this. Also just throwing it out there but I don't think anyone in their right mind would bring this up in an investor meeting as sort of a silver lining to their financial situation unless the products release was imminent. Whether GW3 exists or not I think we can all agree it definitely isn't coming this year.

I'd much rather have Guild Wars 1 Remake than Guild Wars 3

Nah, GW1 is already a dead horse, we need something new in the IP to bring in new players in large numbers.

@@missk1697 mmos don't have the pull or popularity that they used to anymore. Most gamers play non mmo rpgs.

@@whyisthisathingnow... the beat rpgs are the ones who exist for literal century. wow and gw still hold the top tier. final fantasy is ok too but its not your classic MMORPG. we are all dying to get a new fresh MMo where dwva are not mentally retarded and do everything contrary to what PB wants

The obsession with UE5 is going to burn so many studios. I really hope Arenanet isn't one of them.

Also people sometimes forget how much time takes to make a game. Even if they already have the pre production done for Guild Wars 3, the game is at minimum 3 years from today if not 5

9:30 I think it would be a fresh start for development too. Using a modern engine that is well-known and not proprietary and not having a ton of crappy legacy development tools to deal with on the in-house engine could help their production process/speed as well. 10:14 I feel this too. People are so wrapped up in their "investment" in something like this, you had fun didn't you? Does the ceasing of production of a game invalidate all the fun you had IN THE MOMENTS between then and now? It's such an unhealthy way to think about and relate to games that way.

Good. Theres been technological advances in the last 10 years. Why hold the game back because of legacy choices? New game. Mounts as a core component build around. Better animations.. less sharding... actual RP support... What if they finally add Tengu after 10 years of being dicked around and teased? All the bullshit cash shop garbage won't make the game better.
