I went sooo long without eating sugary stuff that the thought of eating it would temporarily put me in a bad, unenthusiastic mood and almost make me feel like i had a headache coming on. All i drank was water no juices. I got my sugar from eating fruit only. Once i started eating junk, that whole deal unravelled FAST and i found myself suddenly craving sugar. it took about 48 hours for all those YEARS of being repulsed by sugar to 180 itself. I dont think i can ever go back to those old days of hating sugar now because im almost 40, but the times that i truly hated the thought of eating sugary food, was between the ages of 18, when i started lifting and eating high protein and only wholesome meals, until the age of about 33. 15 years of no sugar. At about 25 i started really hating the thought of eating it. So maybe 7 years to de-program my brain's sugar craving.

UnknownRex So... you pretty much don’t eat for 144 days outta the year? I mean... maybe this isn’t a bad idea? There are a lot of places in the world that people go hungry like this bc they don’t have a choice. It seems like everything Ive tried (logging food, specific diets, going vegan) just trigger OCD in me to the point that it’s too distracting so I end up avoiding it altogether. Maybe this is the answer to my food issues..
@UnknownRex5 жыл бұрын
@@jsmithsemper4848 It worked for me, I lost 110lb doing it over the course of a year, year and a half. Been doing it for over two years now and plan on sticking to it. I feel better, I think more clearly and I enjoy life more. Not quite sure it adds up to a full 144 days of fastng, as a 48 hour fast is in my situation just "skipping 1 day". Since I only have 1 meal a day, skipping a day is the same as 48 hour fast for me. Ofc, I am not a medical expert, so I highly advice anyone to do their own research into it as well, and to very closly pay attention to your body an health. Over all fasting seem to work very well indeed, and I can personally recommend it. Also, I never once counted a calorie in my journy from size XXXL cloth to M. I did also cut back severly on carbs mind you. I avoid sugar like the plauge, and I avoid other processed food such as bread and pasta for the most part, though occationally I do indulge (but not in sugar). So that kind of aplified the fasting effects.
@jsmithsemper48485 жыл бұрын
UnknownRex First of all, Congratulations!!!! XXXL to M shirt size???? Whoa! That’s a significant chunk & truly amazing! I know you’re proud of yourself! That is awesome! I see this as being a sustainable way for me to lose weight. I lost 80 lbs in 2016 but now in 2019, I’ve probably gained 20 lbs back & it’s gonna take a drastic change in my diet to shock my system & drop the weight off again. I really want to lose 10-20 more lbs in addition to that. Trying all these different diets is just prolonging it. Fasting & cutting out sugar & reducing carbs sounds like the plan I need to get on. Just actually doing it & sticking with it will be hard. Do you have any tips or tricks? I tell myself that cookies & such in the break room at work have poison in them. 😂🤷🏻♀️it works most of the time. A lot of times tho I do like jocko says & justify eating garbage just bc I can. How do you stay in your fast without breaking it? I can imagine that after I start seeing results that will be enough to keep me doing it. Love to hear back from you, let me know!
@UnknownRex5 жыл бұрын
@@jsmithsemper4848 Thank you, I appreciate that! :) It might be a bit of ramble down bellow I now realize in hindsigt, but hopefully some if it will be useful! It does seem my error correction is not working properly, and my native language is not enhlish, so I apologize for that. For me seeing the progress really did help my convition to stay on the plan. And after a while fasting becomes more natural and the body adjusts your hormones (like the hunger hormone ghrelin, and the insulin becomes better as well) so that you don't really get hungry outside your regular eating hours. I find that keeping a regular window for eating and sticking to it really helps. Your body does actually respond well to a fixed daily routine like that :) In the beginign outside of the eating window if you feel hungry or "peckish", I would drink some water, coffee or tea. That takes the edge off and helped me lots to start off. Coffee does help with keeping hunger at bay as well, and I do drink that every morning due to habit. According to some it does not break the fast (as long as you use no added sugar or milk), and I find it tasts good as well, so it is a bonus :) I also tried to associate abstaining from snacking and bad food as a source of strenght and pride, and as such it was rewarding in itself to not eat it. Feeling better about not taking that cookie or chocolate than I would from the small dopamine rush of eating it. The interesting thing with not eating many carbs is that for me it kind of reinforces itself eventually, since the cravings fade over time, and now tha tmy diet is msotly fats and protein I feel more satiated and full for longer periods. If I do eat carbs now, I feel more quickly bloated and letargic, and I rather not feel like that. I do allow some slack on certian occations and social gatherings, like I may grab a beer or two if I go to the pub, but that happens very rarly so its not a big issue. The important thing is the daily routine, not to punish yourself for everything. What you do 80% to 90% of the time is what matters the most, the last few % can be some slack. And besides, since I don't "want" to eat carbs anymore, I can eat whatever I want when making food. One tip is to get to know your spices well and find a few really good healthy dishes you can make easily and fairly quickly. For me it is some chili stews and curries. Simple one pot meals that taste delicious with just healthy ingridients, nice to have on standby :) It is also imprtant to note that if you do have a bad day, and do break and indulge, to forgive yourself. It happens. Just say to your self "its alright, I will just continue to do the right thing from now on again". That way a small break does not shatter the whole thing, nor do you feel the need to punish yourself excessivley. We are all human, and sometimes shit happens after all. It is what it is, and we just move on and keep on sticking to the plan. What really got me started on the whole thing was that I just kind of got fed up with not feeling well and not beign what I thought I could be. I decided to start trying to just be better, and along the way I discoverd more and more things to do. I started by cutting sugar, then came the carbs, then I read about fasting, doing for a while one meal a day, then I started to include a regular 48 hours fast, and eventually a 72 hours fast once a month. Take time as your friend and perhaps ease into it. I would get comfortable with one meal a day first (or even say a 6:18 fast first) over a few weeks before doing a 48 hours fast, that way it will be easier for your body and easier to stick to. Sticking to the fast for me is kinda like a deal I got with myself in a way. I kind of mentally "schedule" a time where I fast, and I just gotta stick to that plan like I would stick to other plans. Like say studying for an exam or somethinge like that, but I usually have a reward like a good meal in the other end planned to look foreward to. Also food tasts delicious after a long fast! :) But over time, it becomes a habbit, so I guess what it all boils down to is that you gotta find some kind of reward structure in the bginning, rewarding your own good habits (with healthy rewards mind you! :) ), and stick to it for some time. Eventually your body adjusts and it becomes easier, and more ingrained in you. For me I still have some more slack on saturdays, like I may have some nuts and berris outside my regular meal (but only a couple of hours away from it so as to not deviate too much from my fasting).

UnknownRex Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me! Strong support has been EVERYTHING along my self-improvement journey. My retention of the knowledge I gain really only gets put into practice bc of the people that make an effort to have a dialogue with me! So I hope you know the time it takes you to offer your feedback & support is really really appreciated by me! Just today, I put on my shorts that were very loose on me last summer & this summer, I am filling them out again. 🙇♀️ Jesus take the wheeeeel, I am just so fed up with this being a major struggle. It overtakes my life & I’m right back at square one. I am EXACTLY where you were when you started. I’m VERY tired of not feeling well & beyond tired of not living up to being who I know I can be, just because of my stupid, unplanned food choices. I’ll look up the 6:18 fast to get started, thanks! I’m probably going to start with a rigid fasting schedule so that the habit will become ingrained & so that I’ll drop the weight. Designate Monday & Tuesday as my fasting days & then on the last week each month, Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday. What do you think? One meal per day is not going to be too much of a challenge for me, as that’s pretty much what I eat now. Other than that, I pretty much just eat snacks bc I know I have to eat or feel a tiny bit hungry or cranky. It’s just that I’m in a horrible habit of feeding at night bc that’s when my medication has worn off & my body finally realizes it’s hungry. I’ve always been a huge milk drinker but it no longer agrees with me so I can & have pretty much cut that out. Carbs are such a slippery slope. It’s seems like whenever I eat them, especially when I order food from a restaurant, the portion of carbs are always huge & starchy carbs seem to make me hungrier so I just keep eating them & then feel miserably full after that! That bloated feeling is so icky. You’re right! Sugar is a HUGE problem for me. It turns me into someone I’m not, like I become possessed by it almost. Exactly like little kids do! It’s so fucked up! I go into a shame spiral after I eat it, too. Every. Single. Time! The devil is on my shoulder telling me to “go get that gas station slusheeee, just doooo itttt...it’s only $0.79, & it’s so refreshing, & tastes like heaven & omg is that a sour lemon head flavor, LOOK AT IT just coolin over there in the corner, all that tangy cool deliciousness, bitch treat yo’ self!!!” Ironically enough, the devil on my shoulder’s voice sounds exactly like Jocko’s voice!😱😾😂😂Jocko & Echo are my precious angels from the heavens! They are on my side, they are NOT the devil! So that’s how I KNOW sugar is the devil in disguise! Talk about psychological warfare! When I walk past the sour gummy bears & all the different sweets in the store, my soul turns into a demon. I too, am a glutton for an Oreo mint chocolate chip milkshake from Cook Out. It’s just... those things should be illegal. I wish they’d just charge $40 for those damn things & I’d probably be less inclined to indulge. No... no I would not. I would still buy one for $40., who am I kidding here. My sugar demon is a crack head heroin meth addict alcoholic. Bitch is strong as hell!!!! So yeah. Fasting it is. I’m not loving how this weight gain has kinda just crept back up on me after I was doing so well before & truly enjoying the benefits of a healthier lifestyle & my fitness routines! I better grab the bull by the horns before it gets more out of control than it has gotten. Idk what happened, but I think I got depressed & now I gotta fight with my weight, once again, to get out of it. Im not a happy camper. 😔 I’m the only one that can fix it & I haven’t lost hope. But I better attack it before I lose hope. Even though I’ve been here before, I know too well I didn’t want to be here ever again. Anyways-- I’m excited to fast, it’s going to bring about welcome change & I will feel good again! It’s not easier said than done. It’s easy to get it back on track & I gotta just tell myself that. It’s not hard. We make it waaaaaay harder than it has to be. Especially those of us who are genetically predisposed to obesity. I don’t care what anyone says, some of us really do have to work harder at this than others. I believe Jocko of all people probably knows this struggle very well & is a good ally to have bc he gets it. There’s a lot of public figures who don’t understand the struggle because they have always maintained a healthy weight. But if it becomes a problem for someone once, it lurks & looms & threatens to rear its ugly head for the rest of our lives. Once I started Intermittent Fasting I stopped looking at food as good a bad, plus working out consistently .. I know chicken is better ice cream 😑 but I can eat both and still be a healthy individual, especially in 🇺🇸 Keep up the good content Jocko 👌🏻 San Diego Represent 😌💯

At 6'3" and 160lbs. I eat what I like, but I also make sure I eat nutrient dense foods as well. If I eat some potato chips, and then I also eat some broccoli and drink some V8 juice. Eat some Ice Cream, then I also eat some peanut butter.

Finally, Jocko said it, "I am not a human". Given his work spreading knowledge to the people he spent a career protecting, could he in fact be a guardian angel?

I did a 4 day fast earlier this year, felt totally normal on the last day i only broke the fast because i had to teach a children's class the next morning and I knew they would sense my drop in energy and rip me apart haha kids are like sharks they can smell the blood in the water.

I try to maintain a disciplined and balanced daily routine. However, on the days that I give in to tempting gratification, I also brainwash myself into believing that I'm ingesting extra energy. The day after always means extra roadwork ( a daily necessity that I hate), compound exercises plus super sets at the gym, which, for me, is a killer. Then I remember that I brought it all on myself because I gave in to temptation.

Kemp’s frozen yogurt in Houston anyway is low sugar or sugar substitute. And then you can always seek out raw milk and add Hershey’s sugar free syrup.

I did 72 hrs, had one bowl of Cheerios the 4th day, then did another 72 hours. Total was one bowl of Cheerios over 7 days. Hiked and worked out the whole time. Drank a ton of water. Lost 8 pounds. Felt great. Challenging week, though.

Great convo' guys... and some great tips! Only thing I didn't hear, and you might find helpful, though... Is how much BETTER some of those pleasures are after you've missed them a while. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" kind of principle(s) really can help. Honestly, think about this... If you eat a chunk of cake every day, then that cake loses it's meaning. It's not going to taste bad... but it gets to a point (like everything) that "It's just cake"... If (on the other hand) as much as you might like that cake, you only let yourself have it (maybe) once in six months... Just that one piece... then instead of wolfing the sh*t down like there's no tomorrow, and feeling guilty about packing on a half-dozen pounds a day... You take your time. You savor every morsel... meticulously study the particular flavor profile, even separately delight in the frosting as much as the cake itself. You think seriously, "Damn that was some good cake!!!" It works for just about everything, too. Less becomes more... more appreciated. More respected (especially those things you can make on your own). More enjoyed... and enjoyable. Eventually, you don't even really have to think about it doing less harm over-all, just by the virtue of eating less of it. ...and it's easier to drop the whole "guilt" part and quit being pretentious about motivations. Yeah, I eat cake once in a while. I can enjoy it once in a while. I just fail to see a point in turning cake (or enter your favorite guilt-food here) into an experience as cheap, available, and worthless as water. I like to ENJOY my damn cake. That's all. ;o)

I use to have 3 day cheat days, fri - sun, it was insane. Friday was glutton day and the weekend was left over ice cream or other junk. I was even beginning to let it seep into Thursday night as well, thinking "oh it's almost Friday anyways..." I honestly don't know what I was thinking. Now I have an ice cream allowance once a week, which is much more reasonable. what's interesting to note is, even with the dramatically reduced junk food intake, and increased exercise, I'm really not losing that much more weight... In fact, I feel like I had an easier time losing weight before, it honestly doesn't make any sense to me.

It appears, to me, that people that eat exceptionally clean refer to chips as “POTATOE chips” As though they’re so unfamiliar with normal chip eating behaviour that they don’t actually know the word for it

All I know is that we always had chocolate milk after cross country and there's this one called "RE-FUEL" which had that the time 26g casin so when I had an injury I would drink that about an hour before bed so the protein released with my HGH. Seemed to help, could've been placebo.
@Elgar3373 жыл бұрын
Make your bed in the morning. That way you set yourself up to accomplish more tasks in the day. Don't give in to the temptation of cheating. That way you shield yourself from future temptations. If you give in even momentarily, you have to treat it like you treated it the first time you decided to get your shit together.

9:00 there are some who say that its a good idea to eat something healthy before the event so you are not as hungry, and only eat a few of those unhealthy delicious snacks. I never could do it, buy still, wanted to share the theory for those more disciplined than me.

I would like to hear their thoughts on how to lead a blended family effectively, specifically from a stepdads point of view. I have all the responsibility of a parent but not the control etc.
@ib1ray5 жыл бұрын
Mutual respect and boundaries go an extremely long way but the parent has to be on board and that's not the case a lot of the time. I got lucky and the father wasn't involved with my wife's kids at all so she gave me much more latitude in handling the younger kids(3&4 at the time). The older kids(8&10) though I tried to be more like a mentor and guide them as opposed to trying to discipline them. Boundaries, though, are extremely important. My humble opinion. Good luck
