It seems like a car is always healthier when its driven constantly. Its when they are left sitting around that kills them. Proof of this is seen in the diesel transport industry. Semis frequently go for millions of miles. Granted a diesel engine is a far more reliable design, but I dont see diesel cars and small trucks doing this. My rule is two weeks. I have always seemed to keep about half a dozen vehicles around (im a mechanic) and I have noticed if they sit there parked it will kill them. Always start them up, even if they arent going to be driven, and warm it to operating temperature, run through the gears, and flip all the switches and they seem to last forever.

@holdenkilgore70039 жыл бұрын
My car is 40years old and I bought it in horrible condition, it's still a piece of crap and needs a full restoration soon. The only reason I kept it is because I love it to death and it has cheated mechanical logic weekly. If I run it for 30 minutes a day, and give it a rest day once it has a major problem (over heating, won't go into high gears, etc etc) it'll run like a champ when I need it to. So far I only put $2000 into it, which was the original purchase and I just let it fix itself because I'm broke. The joys of an old Chevy....
@Bronywithguns8709 жыл бұрын
Josh Denham Yeah Im having to deal with this sitting problem myself. My mom gave me her 1970 Chevy Chevelle Malibu and it sat for 5 years doing nothing in the driveway. in 2013 I got just enough money to get a set of new tires for it to roll around on and we got it running. 2014 rolls around and we got it tagged and took it our for its first drive in 6 years and it felt great just to be riding in it for the first time since I was almost 6 (im 17 now). I got my license last year and Ive been driving it to and from school and work for the past year. Letting a car sit is worse than beating it and now I've had to replace the brake booster and master cylinder, fix the headlight wiring, replace the heater blower motor and now I have to replace the heater core. Soon I'll have to figure out if I have rot holes around the windshield and back glass cause it leaks a little. So... DONT LET A CAR SIT. IT WILL MESS UP THINGS FASTER THAN YOU THINK AND IT WILL BE TONS OF LITTLE THINGS YOU'LL HAVE TO FIX.

I find it really hard to believe a person can put almost 3 Million miles on a single car without a complete rebuild multiple times over.
@looncraz8 жыл бұрын
+kellerr13 It has had two rebuilds. The first wasn't necessary, supposedly, and was performed at 680,000 miles. The second was done at nearly 2,000,000 miles. The engine design was very simple and robust - if any engine could do it, it's the Volvo B18. It also helps that there is a large support network for owners since so many are kept around and so many people have restored others. My 240 Volvo, prior to being destroy in a crash, had 268,000 miles on it with the only repairs being the intake hose and the engine harness. Nothing else ever went wrong with it in its 19 year life. My current Volvo is 20 years old with almost 200,000 *hard* miles on it. Transmission gave up the ghost about 20,000 miles ago, but that's it. Car has never not started, though I had a ruptured heater hose (brand new hose, no less) cause a pretty serious overheat which resulted in a headgasket replacement. Recently the rear main seal started leaking - which figures, because I had it replaced with the transmission... so I decided to just opt for a full rebuild (did the work myself, so not too expensive, just time consuming - but I love to tinker). The engine was nearly pristine, but I'm glad I did the rebuild as there was debris clogging the oil intake tube and numerous valves were leaking (I trusted a shop to do their job right when I had it machine, but they did not - should have checked their work...). The car should last another 20 years now.

Some people do get attached to a particular car without having any intention of it. 7 years ago I bought a 1990 Honda Accord for $2000. It was well taken care of, I'm the third legal owner (in a way, second owner due to my parents having it in their name for about 6 years and then they put it in my name. They did that to help me keep insurance costs down by them being a multi-car owner) and I love the car. It's got over 300K miles on it, it still runs fine...needs some repair, but it would still be a good reliable car. I would drive it across the country and back. I recently got another car and I cannot seem to get rid of my Honda. I would rather continue making insurance payments on it than get rid of it. There is so many good memories good memories attached to it. Other than general maintenance, I haven't had any issues with it. The person I bought it from is a family friend and he kind of regrets selling it because he's gone thru two or three cars since I bought the Honda from him. If I had the money to fully restore it, I would. I wouldn't care if it cost $10,000 to do it, I have just been so happy with that car. My dad thinks I'm crazy for keeping it because he doesn't see any dollar value to it but it's not the dollar value to me...it's the memories, the reliability, the places I have been with it...it's not JUST a car to me..

@@kingprone7846 Could be but I run inexpensive all seasons on my Prius which is also rather low-powered although not this low-powered I get about 50,000 miles out of them. There are some 80,000 mile tires and I guess if you drove very very gingerly perhaps you could squeak that much out of them. I use my car for work I don't have time for that shit. Time is money I have to get places. So I tend to beat the crap out of my car. I've actually had really good luck with the Sentury branded tires from Discount Tire. I think I'm on my third set, at $42 a piece they're pretty good bargain they have decent grip decent wet and even decent snow when the treads still deep. but I live in a very hot dry climate so I don't really have to worry about water much so I tend to run mine down well below the wear bars also unless I'm coming into winter time or the rainy season when they happen to be worn out. Actually I know a guy who runs a set of these on a Tesla Model 3 performance he used them as his road trip tires and he actually had pretty good luck with them too. If you need a cheap set of tires that are halfway decent they're worth a look.

I dont belive this . classic cars only go up to 100k miles then reset. After that.
