Standing at a staggering height of 8 foot and 11 inches, Robert Wadlow is the tallest person to have ever lived. Sadly, his life was cut tragically short when an infection led to his death in 1940.
Our editor-in-chief, Craig Glenday, investigates whether we will ever see the likes of Wadlow again, towering over the rest of humanity. The world's current tallest person, Sultan Kosen, stands at 8 foot and 3 inches and science enabled the Turkish giant to stop growing.
Why won't we see anyone taller than Wadlow? How has science advanced to mean that the record for tallest ever human will never be beaten?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At Guinness World Records we want to show that everyone in the world is the best at something, and we’re here to measure it! Whether you’ve got the stretchiest skin, know the world’s smallest dog or want to create the largest human dominoes chain we want to hear about it.
Here on the Guinness World Records KZbin channel we want to showcase incredible talent. If you're looking for videos featuring the world's tallest, shortest, fastest, longest, oldest and most incredible things on the planet, you're in the right place.

Random fact: Male neanderthals stood on average 5’5” while female Neanderthals were 5’. Having to hunt predictors bigger, faster, stronger, and more dangerous while meat eating dinosaurs could eat you an an appetizer. In comparison that’s like you going up against a giraffe (which resembles a long neck dinosaur then a chicken does) or an elephant or a hippopotamus (hippo) without any guns just a spear, a slingshot, maybe a torch, and any other weapons you/ they crafted at that time.

My mother (1926 - 2019) grew up in the same neighborhood of Upper Alton (Illinois) as Robert Wadlow and went to the same schools, although were not in the same grades. He was never treated as a freak in his home town and was a gentleman in every respect. Mom told me that Robert never failed to say Hello and chat with her in the neighborhood and he dealt with his disability as best he could. My father and my paternal grandfather both worked for International Shoe Co. in nearby St Louis (Missouri) which made his shoes.

He really couldn't feel his feet and legs anymore. That's what ultimately caused his death, the braces he wore rubbed on one of his ankles causing a blister. Since he had little to no feeling in his legs by the time he discovered it, it was too late and infection set in. Doctors did all they could for him but due to the time period they didn't have the proper equipment or technology to save him and he died from the infection that ravaged his body. It's sad and unfortunate but at least he will always be remembered and admired due to his size and friendly nature.

I owe a lot to Robert Wadlow. When I was 11 and then 12 I was constantly reading the Guinness book of World Records and came upon his story. I must have reread it dozens of times, noticing in particular his height at his various childhood ages. He was taller than me at age 12, but only by a few inches. The book claimed he had Gigantism, which led me to my doctor and saying I think I have Gigantism as well. Here I was, a 12 yr old girl and I was already 6'4". The last inch I grew happened over only 6 weeks. I went to my Doctor who laughed at me saying " You're tall because your father was tall.". My father was 6'5" full adult height and male...how much sense does it make that I would "naturally" be 6'4" at age 12 and female ??? My mother had to raise her voice quite a bit with this Doctor ( wondering still if she got her medical diploma off a cornflakes box ) so finally this doctor did consent to take some bloodwork on me. Well, a couple days later, now I was being called in for an Xray of my head. Jee whiz, well the blood work was this, a test of my growth hormone level. Normal was ( I don't know what units they were using then ) 0-5, iffy was 5-10, and here my result was 42.5...suddenly the doctor wasn't laughing anymore. The Xray was reviewed by an endocrinologist at the local University and in the pituitary area there was a hazy area all through it, indicating a tumor. Guess what, just like I guessed, I had Gigantism. I went through hell and back with about 30 CAT scans, piles of Xrays, blood tests, poking, prodding etc etc and then the hell surgery ( that would take pages to describe the painful hell that was ) to remove the tumor through the back of my sinuses. If it wasn't for Robert Wadlow's story getting me on the right track of what I had, I would have grown goodness knows how tall and had no life. An extra special THANK YOU to Dr. B.K. Weir who did the surgery under a microscope and it never grew back.

Yup, we've always listed Angus MacAskill as the tallest "true" (non pathological) giant, at 2.36 m (7 ft 9 in). Born in the Western Isles of Scotland in 1823, died in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1863. Neil Fingleton's the tallest I've met with no known condition contributing to his height; I learned from him never to compete with a true giant in a drinking game - the boy could sink those pints in seconds, like he was taking a shot!)

Andre the Giant had a difficult time living at the size he was, and he wasn't even 7'6", and he lived in the mid-20th century. I can't believe how hard it had to be for Robert. Great video. I have been following Robert Wadlow since I first saw his picture in a Guinness book from the 80's. Some of the footage you showed in this video is completely new to me. Kudos.

Note a giant over 8 feet tall could not perform any strength training as person would immediately suffer s heart attack. Human heart isnt built to maintain true giant, over 8 feet, stature past age of 35, if u add weight training in mix 8 footer or over dies immediately from heart failure. Any person over 8 feet is either walking w/ clutches, in a wheelchair or in very rare case full leg braces that are extremely uncomfortable. Robert didnt want to use crutches I think because that would have made him appear sickly or entirely unhealthy. But if Robert would have used crushed there would have been a chance for him to live 5 more years to the age of only 27. In those extra 5 years Robert was averaging growth of 2 inches per year w/o very possible growth spurt. There would have been a viable reason to have officially measured a 27 year Robert at 9 feet 10 inches tall. In order to attain that age of 27 at almost 10 feet tall Robrrt would have had to accept a life of mostly not going out on tour but almost always being bed ridden which is not offer any quality of life that he did have until Robert died at 22. Imagine Robert is only person who could have possibly approached 10 feet in height. 9 feet in height will never be approached again.

1:48: Actually, the tallest woman that's ever lived was a girl named Trijntje Keever who grew to 254cm (8'4"), as far as I know properly measured, until she sadly passed away at 17 years old. This means that she was taller than Robert Wadlow at 17, so realizing that she could've rivaled his height is crazy!

The majority of the tallest people who've ever lived have suffered with an overactive pituitary gland causing the continued growth. These days this kind of issue can be easily cured but there are still some folks in the poorer regions of the world where getting help is much more difficult. Being very tall has so many negatives on the human body which is such a shame for people who aren't able to get help early on in life.
