Guiomar Novaes plays Beethoven "Les Adieux"

Superb! The most satisfying rendition of 81a I've yet heard. I've studied and performed this work, myself, over a period of 55 years, and used this very recording as a role model in my student days. It wears extremely well, and has only increased in stimulating greater love and understanding for this very special work with the passage of time. It's so full of fine, beautifully wrought detail, wonderfully well-thought-out phrasing and subtle dynamic gradations it takes your breath away. Novaes was one of very few who could enchant ad dazzle at once. She managed to be brilliant, insightful, powerful and extraordinarily endearing at the same time.

My piano teacher recommended that I listen to Sra. Novaes 30 years ago, but I couldn't afford to get her records back then. I know why she loved her so much. She was magnificent like my teacher was. I miss you Ms. Moot.

Novaes was a player who never needed any performance practise lessons as we find it so necessary these days... She did her own performance practise in the extremelly deep relation in she had with the music and author she played. One can say whatever one likes abou her, but out of style, be it Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann or Chopin, she was never! There is not a note that does not belong there when we hear her playing, great!

I have a mint-condition 1962 record of her playing the Tempest, Moonlight, and This sonata (thought it was the Waldstein, but my memory was off). Anyway, this is a great recording, but not the one I have, which is a shade faster and seems more natural and more heart-felt. Anyway During the school year, I would fall asleep listening to this, much to my brother’s aggravation. Years later he told me how much he liked it!
