I'll add to that; Thile literally didn't know he would even be jamming with Joe and Corey until a few minutes before they went on; he didn't even know what song they would be playing. What you see is pure, raw improvisation between 3 incredibly talented musicians.

I finished watching Chris Thile playing Bach Sonatas, then changed it up with a mid-2000s Austin City Limits tape of Dolly Parton, and guess who is shredding mandolin? A babyfaced Chris Thile. He transcends time and genre.

This is hands down my favorite version of Dean Town, and probably my favorite thing I've heard out of Vulfpeck in general. I dig Vulf a lot, but I find that a lot of their music can be a little on the formulaic side, and Chris Thile adds this improvisational element to the equation that really lets the Vulf guys stretch outside of their usual thing. (And don't get me wrong, Vulf's stuff may be formulaic, but it's a damn good formula and I definitely dig their music.) Chris Thile really is on another level though. Man is a genius, and hands down one of the most versatile musicians on the planet. He was one of the musicians at the first GroundUp Music Festival (Snarky Puppy's festival), and within a 6 hour stretch or so I saw him do his own set, which was a straight-up bluegrass duo with Michael Davies, followed by sitting in with Snarky Puppy and taking the feature Cory Henry solo spot on Lingus, followed by playing a tune with Harry Shearer/Derek Smalls on his late night Spinal Tap set. He crushed everything. Man can play literally anything with literally anyone and fit in seamlessly and it blows my mind.

I always thought thought Dean Town was ripped from Weather Reports Teen Town - Jaco's basslines.
@rtw13133 жыл бұрын
I’m with you, Mr. Bressner (should have looked in these comments earlier). Bireli was Jaco’s guitarist back in the day and did this one some years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWXZgZmAmtN_n6s. Not a 1-1, of course, but I hear a fair amount of Jaco in Joe Dart’s solos. Maybe he will take out a fretless one day (if he hasn’t already).

They are an accessible “musician’s music” band... their technical prowess and groove is what attracts musicians to them, but none of their music sounds like it would turn off the lay listener, the groove brings them in too... all of that to say that it does not surprise me one bit that the audience is clapping on time - many in the audience are likely musicians too! If you see their MSG concert, Theo asked the audience to hold a droning C and it WAS. ON. PITCH!

Tripped me out when you said Ellicott City. Been watching you for a while a didn't realize you lived about an hour away (Harford County)! Love the videos. However, watch Woody's video on the dean town chords he wrote. He breaks down the chords, which are very clever. They're not all major. It's def F#m, C#m, E, B. More specifically, the exact tonalities reflect something like this: F#m13 (dorian), C#m11 (aeolian), E9 (mixolydian), B (Ionian). Don't believe me, believe the writer! Regardless, great video as always, Mike.

Mr Palmisano, I respect you greatly, and normally I don't have a dog in the fight as I've never played guitar, but I'm a percussionist, (well to be fair, more drummer anymore than percussionist as I avoid mallets and keys).... and the note change in the song, at least in the first measures you two were playing is definitely on the beat not the "E" of the the sixteenth note as you guys were playing it. It does have grace notes leading into the change later on in the song but it settles on the down beat not after still.... Respect the heck out of you sir, but as a stickler for rhythm it was actually making me cringe the way you guys were playing it... lol
