We play popular modulation effects in a simple band mix
Life too short for long KZbin videos? ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ info below.
In this video Dan and I play some of our favourite modulation effects in the context of a simple guitar, bass and drums mix. We’ve covered all of these effects in previous videos, but here we offer some inspiration and ideas for your own playing.
The specific genres and playing styles won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but we hope you can extrapolate into situations that suit your own approach.
Enjoy the show!
Massive thanks to Dougie Mussard for being such a wonderful human and even better drummer.
What happens in Mick’s second jam where he goes to wet/dry with the OD and fuzz?
Okay, so the wet/dry effect is almost totally overshadowed here by the fact the fuzz and the D&M swap order. With the fuzz straight after the guitar, it’s seeing the relatively high impedance of the pickups and volume control. When I hit the wet/dry switch, we’d forgotten that Dan had re-ordered the board for his flanger demo… ergo the D&M comes before the fuzz, meaning the fuzz is now seeing the relatively low impedance of the D&M Drive’s output. Confusing, but it does illustrate why you usually want the fuzz straight after your guitar!
How did we record the band?
Drums are mic’d Glyn Johns style (Neumann TLM102 as overheads), plus an extra snare mic (Beyer M201) underneath. Bass is DI’d via an Ampeg SVT DI (bass rig below); guitar cabs are mic’d with Austrian Audio OC18 into Meris 440 Preamps, plus our stereo room mics (AKGC414XL). There’s plenty of spill all around the mics in the room.
Everything hits our UA Apollo interfaces for recording and I mixed it (Mick here) using Universal Audio Luna.

It would be far too easy for new viewers to put you both in the ‘KZbin gear demo camp’, like so many other KZbin channels. But this is where you both absolutely shine - in a live environment with human interaction and volume. It’s clear from band mixes like this, and from every other band mix you’ve ever recorded, that you’re both stellar musicians with a heap of lived-in real world experience and creativity. I know it’s been said multiple times before, but please just record the album/EP! We’ll all buy it, listen to it and love it, regardless of how many imperfections you think might be recorded and captured on tape for eternity. I work in healthcare, and when you see people at the end of their lives, they never regret the things they have done or the mistakes they made, but they do regret the things they didn’t do. So please, from all the regular viewers of the channel, just record the damn album already so we can all help push you to No1! Great episode and love the show as always!

Pre- this golden age of pedals, all my gain was from an amp with no effects loop, so no choice but to put it first. I must be old. Try this: put the phaser first in chain at 1/2 o’clock and you get a semi cocked auto wah tone on solos.

My journey with you guys has been like a gear masters class over the last few years. Each semester just dives a bit deeper into the subject, and moves ever closer to application rather than simply pontification stage of things, just like any legit academic pursuit should. I’m loving getting to hearing you guys play. Your great players with unique voices, and that in and of itself makes for a worthy viewing. But having made the educational journey with y’all over the years… to see regular application… it’s great. Great video. I put a lot of my modulation effects before drive. When I saw Rush in the early 80s, Lifeson's modulation sounds were more "chewy" as they were going straight into cranked Marshalls. Later he was using them further down the chain and to me it had more clarity but was a little sterile. And thanks Dan, you have inspired me to pull out my scratched by wonderful BF-2 Flanger this weekend!

Not related to this episode but have been watching and learning from you guys for years. I finally set up a wet/dry rig and love it. So I went back to your episode years ago and discovered my problem. The tremolo side of the Flint and the Lex were out of phase with the rest of the rig. When I flipped the phase on the Big Shot with those 2 pedals there was the answer. Thanks for enlightening all us pedal geeks.

Delightful work, friends! Great to see the Retrosonic Flanger back on the boards. I've been using that similarly (and on nearly identical settings) to replace my Analogman Chorus and it's been fantastic. Would love to see some British-sounding amps in future full band episodes. The DR and Two Rock sound great as always, but I'm beginning to miss the Matchless!
