Matt Sweeney hung with Motörhead's late, great Lemmy Kilmister at the icon's favorite LA haunt, the Rainbow Bar & Grill, for one of the British legend's final video interviews. Lemmy lived and breathed rock 'n' roll, but as his impact and influence on the genre and all of its wild offshoots-heavy metal, punk, rockabilly-makes clear, his legacy goes deeper than that; Lemmy WAS rock 'n' roll, and a huge part of that was his never-say-die attitude and rowdy musicianship. Ever the gentleman, after a drink and a game of video poker Sweeney spoke on his love for the the signature Rickenbacker bass guitar, auditioning for Hawkwind, his mother's love for lap-steel, and how seeing the Beatles for the first time changed his life-and by extension, changed rock'n'roll forever.
After the interview, Lemmy’s farewell to Sweeney was “It’s good to meet someone who gives a shit.”
Heaviest Guitar Moves episode for sure.
Original Air Date: September 14, 2016
Matt Sweeney, host of Guitar Moves, is an NYC based producer (Joanna Sternberg “I’ve Got Me”) and composer (Superwolves, Chavez, Red Dead Redemption 2). His guitar playing can be heard on records by Adele, Johnny Cash, Endless Boogie, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, The Desert Sessions, Iggy Pop, Tinariwen.

It is hard to describe how it feels to see Lemmy like this. Underneath the hair dye and rock and roll clothes was an old man with failing health. This is the first time he ever looked… frail.

@@evaplavalagunahe lived a hard rock and roll lifestyle for 55 years before this. It's a wonder he made it to 70. His lifestyle would have killed most people by their 40's or 50's. Tough old bastard.

@@Charlesbabbage2209 Simple as cancer. Anyone whos seen it knows what it does to people, even if the personality is bright it can make the strongest person look like someone you could knock over with one of those japanese hand fans. Reality is in this footage the man was terminal and at the end stages. All things considered the fact he was even up and out of his house is remarkable

I was lucky enough to see him play three times with Motörhead. Even got his bass pick framed when he threw it out into the audience. Was in 2005 when Lemmy was still at the height of his badassery. So sad to see him like this, but awesome that he was still smiling and uniquely Lemmy Kilmister right to the very end 🤘

Even in his worse states, he was so much more aware and ambulatory than Shane McGowan toward his decline. So, what was the confounding variable? Heroin? Kilmister was famously anti-cocaine. Anti-Heroin. Both men were heavy drinkers and LSD and cannabis users. Any med students want to weigh in?

"Seeing Lemmy like this is sad" is one way of looking at it. Kind of like a "glass half empty" thing. Another way of looking at it is to be thankful Matt was able to get this last interview for posterity.

@@danielstoddart You can also look at it like an inspiration. When you see larger than life guys like Lemmy or a Johnny Cash who are struggling health wise, yeah it is sad, but it's true to life as well. When I see videos of Lemmy playing those last shows, despite dying of cancer and whatever other ailments were affecting him, is inspirational.
