Bukka White's slashing slide figures and pounding chords are capable of generating a high level of excitement, capable of leaving dancers joyously exhausted. Yet there is also a sensitivity and a sense of dynamics to his music. Bukka's lyrics ran the gamut from the perceptive to the surreal. The combination of these two voices places Bukka squarely within the blues tradition and in his own unique niche.
In this lesson Tom Feldmann takes you through 10 of Bukka White's tunes. Starting off in Vestapol tuning you'll get his right hand, train beat picking down pat with Special Streamline. Next you'll learn to master playing in Cross-Note tuning with Jitterbug Swing, Aberdeen Mississippi Blues, World Boogie and Sic Em Dogs On.

Tom, Booker stayed at my place in GR,MI in 1971 & 1972 . He taught me to play slide. He had me play mandolin on stage w/ him. You play as I do, but he played inDm. You're doing a great job representing his style! Jimmie Stagger

The rest of the Open D tunes in the lesson are in Dm (Crossnote) but Streamline Special doesn't require that tuning. Not saying he didn't play it in that tuning, but the song does not benefit from being in Crossnote like the others do.

I love this lesson. Tom's technique is excellent but he picks out the bass very precisely which sounds great and I enjoy playing it his way but if you listen and watch BW playing this the bass is quite "strummy" rather than so flawlessly picked. Funny thing is both ways sound so good I don't know which I like more.

Great....I bought Fahey's book on Patton way back when I had to mail order it from Britain...and I wore it and the Yazoo double album out. I learned a little about his style from Grossman's Elektra album and Oak book but never really took on the bottleneck stuff. For a future project maybe...how about Charlie McCoy's "Last Time Blues"?

Dr. James Santiago Calderon, MD Ph.D. retired......shrink turned back to my real love.....sophisticated fingerpicking guitar. I aim to get more of your DVD lessons as well. Your Robert Johnson set is AWESOME. It's so much better than finding scratching recordings and figuring them out WRONG!!

man the bass line you're showing us at first and the one you play when you add the high E and B string is not same, you do not always hit the A string for your bass line and it messes up the entire strumming pattern you gave us before, i am struggling here. But hey who am i to complain, thx mate for the lesson

Check out my new favorite guitar player, Luke Winslow-King - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aH-uZH-Gd8l4nNU. Only person I've heard play Bukka White. He does it on electric tunes too and gets a great sound. I think the secret is you only use thumb and index finger (without a pick).
