I'm an electronics designer and I've always wanted to make a new mechanism for MIDI-guitar where it's basically a real and complete guitar, except that the fret board and strings are used as a "switch matrix" and it uses special pickups where they have individual outputs for each string. When you press down on string to fret it, it'll tell the brains through that contact that where it's been fretted and if there's a signal on the pickup that's strong enough, it's counted as "note on". Thus there's no issue of being out of tune since all that matters is the signal going over set threshold and depending on if it's fretted or not defines it's pitch. The processors today are so cheap and powerful that it's quite easy to do very complex and good algorithm for midi translation unlike back in the 80's...
