I spent 25 years+ doing that, other than a few simple songs I could play all the way through that didn't have much lead/solos. I had fun, but didn't really progress and never felt good about my playing. About 5 years ago I decided I was going to learn a full song and focused on Welcome to the Jungle - amazed myself. Once I'd done that I taught myself lots of solos like Smoke on the Water, Stairway to heaven, a load of ACDC, Beatles, pretty much all the classics. I feel like I wasted 25 years - I've improved more in the past 5 years than in all the rest of my guitar playing time. Riffs are great to learn when you're starting out, but to really progress you need to learn full songs.

Iron Man and smoke on the water were the first 2 songs I learned. The person who taught me back in high school had an ability that I have seen only a few times since. He could hear a song and then play it back note for note. But he could care less about his talent. Hated when we would be at a party and someone would want to see him do it. I on the other hand had to practice practice practice to get something new learned. I was so jealous of his ability and questioned why God would give this talent to someone who didn't appreciate it like I would've. But in time I became a better player. I still couldn't do his parlor trick but I began to write my own and he was merely a monkey copying what he heard.

Also need to build my calluses more. If I can do that I can get these chords down entirely in no time I figure, and then get some songs to play
