I think he tried this type of shell back in the 80s in the shop I worked (Drummer Only). We had some Ayotte Custom draum snarest with such thick shells. Same for the trick with loosening the bottom head screws. You can get very cheap snares to sound pretty OK and playable that way. Somewhere he gave an interview about his experiences at the Drummers Meeting in Koblenz where he met Jim Chapin. Exciting times. I remember him coming by train and carrying a sampler in a 19 inch 5 units rack strapped to a wheel cart. Remember, this was 85. Not many drummers used such things in these days. Even with 22 he was ahead of the game. I later taxied Gary Chaffee and Steve Smith. Gary was shut up by Steve as Gary only talked about Jojo.

"...then I try to play it [the snare drum] well, which also is kind of important." Hilarious, and spot on.

Yeah, you're right. It takes a lot of practice and dedication to get a great tuning by ear in different pitches, and even more to tune really fast and still have a consistent sound. There're some shortcuts, but that depends on what the drummer is comfortable with and the equipment he/she has. As you said, the list is endless.

If 2¢ was worth $37 in change from the most interesting man in the world, Jojo's 50¢ is worth $925. Which is oddly around the price of this drum... Coincidence? I think not!

Most of the people like to reach the same tone in each lug to have a consistent tuning in the snare and it takes a lot of time. There're some people that use tricks, like Benny Greb form example, he detunes the 2 lugs that are closest to his body to gain a fat backbeat sound in tiny snares. That kind of trick lets you tune faster and get other types of sound. Just try to focus on the overall sound (like Jojo on the video), sometimes tuning lug by lug doesn't get you a great snare tuning.

Interessting... if you would buy this snare in germany, it would be about 650 usd or about 830-890 Euro.

A lot has to do with head choice and what pitch spectrum you are tuning the snare to as well. As well as wires, the type of wood, the rims... the list is endless. ... for me, though, if I want a fat sound, I always strive for the least ring... knowing how to tune the heads to different pitches helps with that. And I tune low...
