I've told my wife often that, like the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead were as much a jazz band as a blues/rock band. She finally believes me after all these years. Jerry at his best. 👍

I think Mayer is just playing sober... Jerry was in outer space plucking away at the stars floating around in his head. Sometimes those stars were well within reach... other times he would miss by light years. I will take that fleeting comet any day over the structured tonal commonalities Mayer delivers. Don't get me wrong... Mayer is a fantastic player! I just don't think he is as fearless and willing to reach for those out of reach stars as Jerry was. Great dive, bud!

Jerry was a once in lifetime person and musician. Beyond unique but certainly unique. Mayer is talented, cocky, strives to achieve but Jerry was so special that words fail. But I like Dead and Co and once in a while Mayer and Bob and the boys take you there.

Michael was worried the video was too long, us Heads wished it was longer😆 lol. This tune is so special and went through so many stages of development in terms of sound and dynamics (and of course the tasty solos😋). I hope we get more of these videos. Its such a great community of Heads on the Tubes💚. Always a pleasure David✌.

Great explanation!! Then the second solo section it goes to Emaj7// to D/A/. Of course it changes over the years and the coda they did in the early 70's in the last jam is so spicy as well. One of the best is dp 31 8/6/74, the coda jam starts around the 10;10 mark.

You blow my mind, again and remind me that I'm barely scratching the surface. I love the channel, all your videos, and you courses. What little I've barely been able to check out, thus far. Never been a Dead fan and barely been able to listen to them much. But I'm definitely becoming a fan now. Your reaction videos are like non other, available on KZbin. Great Reaction bro!!! Man I can’t stress this enough… it would make my year to see Mike react to the a cappella group the Pentatonix! Many people react to them, half non-musicians and half vocal coaches. Now I know Mike isn’t a “singer” per say, but that’s not why I want to see his reaction. It’s his knowledge of theory that really peaks my interest. For all of the things the Pentatonix are good at (singing, harmonizing, performing), the most underrated is their attention to detail when arranging music. Pleeeease Michael I will pay money to see you react to Pentatonix - Evolution of Michael Jackson! Then maybe Sound of Silence if you’re so inclined. Michael has such a good ear for music and insight into structure… it would be legendary 🤘😎

Thanks for this dissection, Michael! Jerry was probably the most "nuanced" player ever for me! So subtle, in a world of crash, slash, and burn guitar all around him. He wasn't ever scared to go way out on that ledge and "hunt" (your term) his way back. And he wasn't scared of pushing the chord structures, even to the point of dissonance, to emphasize certain passages. Perfectly imperfect! Details, man!

Soooo, Michael....after taking a deep look into one of the best improv platforms the band ever had......and your mentioning you had this tune tucked away for awhile now.........(insert question). How did Jerry get so fucking good?! What's your take on it? He's from a time from when guitar players had to slow down records to learn them! No internet for lessons, no "deep dives".....what was it that made him soooo freaking amazing on the guitar? I mean here you are....a pro.....studied....and we can see that this is NOT so easy to pick through! You said, this is a very tough song. What's your take on his level of playing and the way his mind worked??? He seems to have been sooooo unique in his approach to playing.
