Thanks for checking out UM. I'm their FoH engineer. I would like to point out a out a few things you'll find interesting. From 3:36 to 11:30 is improv. It was based around a riff that Jake brought to soundcheck. 90% of that was created from scratch in situ. Also, thanks for the complements on tone. You're hearing the live board mix without any post processing (aside from KZbin compression). The band uses a talkback mic system to discuss cues, keys, song selection, etc., in addition to their "Improv Sign Language for Musicians".

Before I saw Umphreys, a friend of mine told me this: "One guitar player is one of the best guitar players I've ever heard live, and the other one is light years better." I was like "OK, you have my attention." I've been a fan ever since, and my wife loves them even more than I do (her license plate is "UMPHMG"). Love this video. Great reaction. I think all Umphreys fans had that same reaction at some point.

Having seen a few of your vids over the last couple months, and knowing your tastes and also knowing Wizard Burial Ground, I was pretty confident you were going to lose your shit. And you did! And it was delightful to watch and share in your joy. Brought me a couple tears of joy. Also, I think this vid gave YOU a chance to shine, with your metal chops. And YOU did shine, too! It's impressive to watch someone pick up on something as tricky and as fast as this piece of music so quickly. Nice work! And then as a bonus we get a message from sound man Chris Mitchell, within hours of you posting?!! And then Ryan Stasik replies in a thread?!! (Michael, not sure if you caught that yet- probably not. There's a comment on this vid that says "Phish is fun, but Umphrey's has my heart" and Ryan Stasik, who plays bass, jumps in to defend his band against fake news click track allegations in that thread. Please get your facts straight before attacking musicians and band people! Or better yet, don't attack musicians and bands! MUSIC ISN'T A ZERO SUM GAME!!) Says a lot about your channel right now, and also says a lot about Chris MItchell, Ryan Stasik and the Umphrey's McGee family in general. They care. A whole bunch. And they work really, really hard at it. I was supposed to go see UM tomorrow night in Oakland, near where I live now (I'm originally from Maryland- cool to see a MD guitarist representing Michael) and this vid helps ease the sting a little from the cancelled show. Keep up the excellent work sir! Good luck with the kids over the next couple weeks and hope the distant future is less chaotic than the immediate future. They actually Played this song in a Borders Bookstore in 2007. Talk about confused customers. Discovered them early in my guitar playing development when I was in high school 2005. First time I saw Jake live I couldn’t believe my ears. Chicken pickin to Van Halen shred to reggae breakdowns in a single song. Seen them over the last 13+ years and I’ve never not left a show blown away grinning ear to ear. So glad they are getting the recognition they deserve.

This WBG is my go-to when I really need to go there. I love my Dead, Phish of course. But as a younger jam band fan, just turned 30, Umphreys will be the band I grow up with & be "my band". Umphrey's does jams a little different. More like directionally inspired improv. They have certain hand signals to communicate to the members when someone is leading. They also talk into their monitors sometimes. And then Jimmy Stewarts are another variation of jams they do sometimes. This WBG is so beautiful it almost makes me tear up sometimes. I couldn't imagine witnessing this live. It's about as perfect of a 1st jam section as you can get, in my opinion.

I saw UM in front of 10 people at the Fox theatre in Boulder around 2001 or 2002. One person left bc they couldn't handle the avant garde nature, and one other left bc they fell into a rail and broke their nose from groovin so hard..then there were 8. True story!

Awesome, Michael, thank you! The section starting around 10:15 is all improv and culled from past improvs - not part of Wizard. The night before, 5-3-14 was the UMBowl (5) at the Capitol Theatre, where they experiment and write during experimentations with past improvs.
