Hi Michael, me - old guy from germany, I follow your clips for some time now, but I never saw you soooooo touched and "open/vulnerable" as in this clip ... I have tears in my eyes - because of your incredible choices (most of which I didn't know until today) but also because of your "feel" ... I am so grateful ... thanks a lot ... and keep on to music 👍🏼

Norah doesn’t get enough credit. She literally had the highest-selling album by a female artist in the 2000s (Come Away with Me) on a flailing Jazz label and managed to cohesively meld jazz, pop, blues, easy listening, soft rock, and country influences into her distinct smoky sound. Her podcast Norah is Playing Along is great and a testament to her versatility. She’s also not just slow songs either. Her songs Happy Pills, Chasing Pirates, and Everybody Needs a Best Friend are good examples of different moods to her music.

I saw her in the same sized venue, on a small college campus with great acoustics, from the 4th row and it is hard to top that. I had just recently seen Joan Baez in Oxford, MS; Bonnie Raitt in Starkville and the same week, Sheryl Crow in Biloxi @ Hard Rock. I had great seats in great venues, but it’s hard to beat legends like Joan or once in a generation talent like Bonnie, but Alison Kraus blew me away, even after those excellent testimonial-level displays of crazy, God given talent, in Arkansas. I had chills and I cried. And then I cried some more… By far, the AK concert rem😢ains my all-time favorite concert. I’m lucky to have seen these icons in small venues. Literally awesome. Susan Tedesci is easily the top of my must-see list of female artists. They are all underrated, but it’s especially so for Susan. I expect it to be a life-altering, soul stirring, profound experience with depth and resonance. Who is at the top of your list?

Outstanding list. I can't argue with any of the choices. Thank you in particular for including Susan Tedeschi. When you say that's who you'd see tomorrow - I had the joy of seeing her (and the TTB) live this year. What a hidden (from many people) gem, and YES great guitar skills. I would have chosen her playing Do I Look Worried. What all these amazing women have in common is not just great singing ability, but deep musicianship and instrumental talent. Music is so much an organic part of who they are - not just something they do. It's a soulful experience to listen to them. GaGa sang it best - I was born this way.

So fortunate to have been at Tedeschi Trucks' premiere concert in NYC at MSG in 2023 and will see them again this year in August in CT where I live. Michael...I was gonna call you out and say how dare you not place Alison in first place! Then I saw Bonnie there and thought, yeah, you nailed it. I remember being about 14 years old and riding in the back of my parents Mercury Cougar. Playing in it's cassette radio was Bonnie's Luck of the Draw. Riding around in that beautiful car and hearing that beautiful lady's voice coming from the rear speakers was life changing. I remember just staring out the window and getting fully immersed in her voice. I love the entire album, getting jazzed up on some of her songs and almost breaking down with tears, especially when listening to I Can't Make You Love Me. Michael, I also noticed you getting teary eyed here in the video. I get it man...just an incredibly beautiful and heartbreaking song at the same time. Bonnie's story telling is like no other and gut wrenching at times, particularly when she says, "I close my eyes, then I won't see, the love you don't feel, when your holding me", it just tears me up every time. This is why we all love her. Thank you for doing this video, couldn't agree more with your choices.

Love all your picks, Alison Kraus and Susan Tedeschi especially. So fine, so emotionally driven, you can’t help but feel moved with their delivery and the quality of musicians they choose to accompany them is beyond excellent! Great Video, thanks

I would have loved to see Whitney Houston sing the National Anthem. When I heard her sing it when I was a Marine over in Desert Storm. I stood in my uniform and cried tears of joy. In my humble opinion, this was her crown jewel. On that day, her voice was perfect for this occasion: Respectfully yours, Steven Olson SSgt USMC

I kept trying to put Whitney in there too, but she's not a musician. I'm not sure about her song writing either...what a voice though!

Wonderful compilation! I agree with all. Saw Alison Krauss & Union Station, Bonnie Raitt with Bruce Hornsby live a couple times. Magical. There's no substitute for live performances by artists of this caliber. Tedeschi Trucks is on my list for a next live show. Got to see I Pity the Fool live!

everybody is putting great artists forward in the comments which is wonderful. i love that you put lady gaga on here who has successfully navigated various genres and worked her butt off to be where she is. great list. another great artists who has done the same is Pink. doesn't get as much love in the states as overseas but she has done some really good stuff.

Damn, Mike! THAT is MY list! Lady Gaga seems to be an outlier, but that woman is a musician, a writer and an artist. Highly underrated by so-called 'real' music-lovers. And then to top it off with Susan: I was almost afraid you'd skip her! Great list, great video. And as always: keep up the good work.

I think that among working musicians, Gaga gets a lot of respect for her talents and determination.

First of all, great video, thank you. Every time I hear that Bonnie Rait song the volume is cranked and the chills follow shortly therafter. Bruce Hornsby’s piano only makes the song that much better. Sheryl Crow is my night on the town; immensely talented and I love her voice.

Hi Michael I can’t argue with any of your picks. It’s your soul being spoken to and transported. Thanks for sharing your favorites. And thanks for asking us to open up a little crack and share with you and with each other. For me it has to be Patty Griffin. It could be so many songs but I’m gonna go with “Shine a Different Way”.

I saw TTB in Berlin in 2022. They are not as well known in Europe as in the US and play much smaller venues, which makes the experience of seeing them better still. I imagine it was similar to seeing Derek and the Dominoes in the early 70s - small place, intimate and amazing. They were incredible. You chose a great song but there are too many to list! I am looking forward to live-streaming their performances at Red Rocks at the end of this month as I live in Switzerland and won’t be in the area! They are a truly awesome band and when they play live they are on another level. As you say, in a different league to anyone else live at present.

I was in a Virgin Records store in Vancouver BC in 2002, and I heard something playing over the store’s PA that stopped me in my tracks: Alison Krauss & Union Station Live. So good…I’ve been a big fan ever since.
