In my area the 4WD versions outnumber the 2WD versions by a considerable amount. Plus locating a 2WD model that is available is rare or expensive. I had purchased a 4WD 2001 Suburban for 1k, and I drove it home. I had purchased this vehicle to perform a LM7/4L60E conversion into my '68 C10 2wd pickup. The engine runs strong and the transmission shifts flawlessly. I have watched many videos on the disassembly of the 4L60E transmission, but this video is by far THE best video on disassembly and reassembly.

Holy Cow!!! That was a superb walk-through! Very easy to understand, and follow! The only problem I could see if you're looking for any constructive feed back, is that the focus of the camera never quite came all the way into focus at some points. I'm sure you are already aware of that though. However, I was able to figure it out with no problems nonetheless. I had a practice transmission to play with. I had one given to me that had been sitting out in someone's yard for like 8 years, so the pump was quite a bit more stubborn to get off. I just kept working it back and forth with deep creep though, and it eventually surrendered...lol. I did have that solenoid clip fly out, and hit me right square in the nose...lol. I'm fine, but I learned right quick why you need to hold your thumb or finger over it...lol I am going to have to actually do the full rebuild kit on the actual one in my truck, so I'm going to look to see if ya'll have a walk-through video for that. I sure hope you do. If so, can you link it to me please? Thanks a ton guys!!! I know that is a lot of work, and poor souls like me really appreciate it more than you'll ever know. The constructive feedback is appreciated. Andy and I were in a big hurry to film this one (running out of time), and it definitely shows in some parts. Having a transmission to practice on is awesome. Great learning tool. Regarding the pump, or the transmission for that matter, sometimes you gotta show it who's boss. ;) Unfortunately, at this point in time, I don't have a rebuild series on the 4L60E. But, I definitely plan on creating one (basic build, performance build, etc.) I really appreciate you sharing the Southpaw Autoworks KZbin channel with your S10 group on FB. I do got a question, how do you get the front drum out if it's stuck? The band is not in it but I can't pull the front drum out. I'm thinking maybe it's hung up on a friction plate.
@SouthpawAutoworks2 жыл бұрын
The Input Reverse drum (front drum) has a clutch pack that’s splined to the Input Drum (rear drum). Yes, it sounds like a clutch is hanging you up. You can grab the input shaft, and pull out both drums, at the same time (this is the most common method of removal). Should come out with ease…seeing how you already removed the 2-4 band.
@SammuelG2 жыл бұрын
Well what had happened was... I put it all together, and the torque wrench I was using for the pump bolts malfunctioned, and I over-torqued one, and it broke off. So, I had to take it back out to get the broke bolt out. Which came out very easily. But now the 3/4 clutch pack drum is like stuck... The input reverse drum came out fine. Maybe the assembly goo, on the little brown rubber spline bushing has it hydraulically locked in?
@SouthpawAutoworks2 жыл бұрын
Bummer about your torque wrench. Glad the bolt was an easy removal. I've had the Input Drum get stuck before. But, it's only happened after a 3-4 clutch failure. When the clutch pack gets burned up real bad, it can weld itself together, and get stuck to the 3-4 clutch hub...making it hard to remove the Input Drum. However, you're dealing with a brand new 3-4 clutch pack...... Based off of the info that you provided, the Input Drum should come out, without any trouble. You could carefully grab the spline part of the input shaft with a pair of vice grips (or slip-joint pliers), and use that to rotate the drum back and forth while you pull. Pull, rotate, and wiggle the input shaft, all at the same time.

Once you removed the input drum and the band, followed by the yellow snap ring, could you slide the output shaft out the rear without further removal of the planetary front hub and the rest of the internal parts? I am thinking of trying this myself and the less have to dissemble the better.
@SouthpawAutoworks3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching so closely. Really appreciate your input.
@SouthpawAutoworks3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, it can be done. In the video, Andy removed the entire rotating assembly, simply out of habit. Even though it's not necessary to remove all that we did for an output shaft swap, we believe in going above and beyond. Typically, we would "peek" at every clutch pack (and of course the band) while we have a transmission opened up. If there's a problem, or gonna be one soon, we want to know about it, right now. Nothing worse than having a "come-back"...especially one that can be avoided. To gain access to all of the clutch packs, the center support, that's lugged to the transmission case, needs to be removed. This way we can inspect the Low/Reverse clutch pack. While we are in there, the hard parts (gears, etc) can also be inspected. A little extra effort goes a long way. ;) Thanks for dropping us a line! You are appreciated.

SOUTHPAW!!!… thank you , thank you! Perfect “fit for purpose” video … sooooo many of us changing our 4wd to a 2wd. For our LS swaps … I do have one question. When changing from 4wd to a 2wd … is there anything special wiring wise that has to be addressed for proper VSS signal to communicate to the wiring harness coming from the donor vehicle ? Being that it’s a 4wd
@SouthpawAutoworks3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that I fully understand the question. I hope what I wrote is helpful... On stock 4WD vehicles, the speed sensor harness connects to a speed sensor that's mounted onto the T-Case (Transfer Case). On stock 2WD vehicles, the speed sensor harness connects to a speed sensor that's mounted on the 4L60E extension housing. The electrical connectors are the same for both 2WD and 4WD OSS (Output Speed Sensor) harnesses. A stock vehicle should have wiring provisions for the OSS, and should be able to physically reach either the T-Case (4WD) or the extension housing (2WD)...whichever is installed....I understand that you are aiming to install a 2WD. There's an early and a late style extension housing...and there's also an early and late style speed sensor. Early VS Late: If the 4L60E has a case and bell housing that are all cast as one piece, that's an early style (4 bolts to connect extension housing to case). However, if there's a case and a separate bolt-on bell housing, then you're dealing with a later style (6 bolts to connect extension housing to case). Early Extension Housing: amzn.to/30IH3LQ (paid link) Early Speed Sensor: amzn.to/3x7R8NQ (paid link) Late style Housing: amzn.to/3FzTok9 (paid link) Late Style Sensor: amzn.to/3xf13kT (paid link) DISCLOSURE: 🕵 As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Awesome video. But having done this before. None of the internal case parts have to actually be removed to swap shafts. It's only the c clip that holds it. Pop the clip. Drop the shaft out the bottom. Then twist and reinstall the new shaft. Then clip it back into place.

Thanks for this great video. At 13:36 in the video he takes out the snap ring that holds the output shaft in the transmission. Will the output shaft come out of the back of the transmission at that point? It looks like it will to me so it looks like that's all that needs to come out. Is that true? Thanks and God bless you all!

Great instructional video! There are so many that fall short. One question; you explained about carefully removing the pump gasket material while the trans was apart, but it was not replaced when reassembling. Is this gasket important?
@SouthpawAutoworks2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the positive feedback! Much appreciated. The pump gasket is very important. Leaving it out would result in multiple oil leaks (internal)...major problems. At 33:58 it shows the pump gasket being installed.

I'm not a transmission expert but hope to learn enough to repair my 4L60E problems. I'm confused how can you tell if TCC is locking on 1994 Astro van or 4L60E of that year? And my transmission has no or sluggish downshift when towing and I have replaced a number of powertrain management sensors with new ones. I won't have time to work on my project until later this year. In future videos maybe you can show how to road test for TCC lock up and no or sluggish passing gear problems that could be vehicle or engine or transmission and difficult to diagnose but can find clues via road testing. I think your videos are on topic and with good talking points and photographs about key points and the speed of the information being presented is about right so Kudo's. I think my 4L60E problems are minor but I hope to ferret those out in future. Here is link to my video logs that are crude for lack of editing skills. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJKVm62NrNeZlcU
@SouthpawAutoworks Жыл бұрын
When the TCC is applied, the RPMs will drop, ever so slightly. It can be hard to detect. Here's one way to check... With the vehicle cruising down the HWY, steady speed, slight grade, hold the throttle steady, while gently tapping the brake pedal, enough to activate the brake lights. If the TCC is working properly, the engine RPMs should increase when working the brakes. After letting off of the brakes, the engine RPM should decrease within 5 seconds. The PCM is constantly watching the brake sensor. When it sees that the brakes are applied, it instantly turns off the TCC...resulting in the RPM change.

Thank you for all your help. I have replaced my sunshell and torque converter in my 4l60e on my 98 tahoe. All seems be fine, sorta.... In my driveway I have run it thru all the gears and it seems fine. When I go from Reverse to Park I hear a thunk. It does go into park but should I be concerned? What may be my issue? Update: The 98 tahoe seems stuck in 4wd low. I need to figure out why, ever see this? UpdateII. I took the front wheel off the ground and looks like there was some tension. Now it's in 2wd High and so far seems good.

Do you use any sealant on the pan gasket?
@SouthpawAutoworks Жыл бұрын
We will use spray adhesive to stick the pan gasket to the pan. However, we do not use any sealant (Silicon, RTV, anaerobic sealer, etc). Spray Adhesive: amzn.to/40JQ1lj Note: We use it to stick the gasket to the pan (not the trans case). Removing the gasket (down the road) from the pan, is a lot easier than removing it from the trans case. DISCLOSURE: 🕵 Links provided are affiliated links with the associated websites. Great video. As a carry over I would like to see a video on installing a late model Corvette differential on the back of a 4L60e making a very short mid-engine power package with a SBC or an LS. I saw a show where that exact thing was done for a sand rail but I can't find any type of adaptor and if you found one what it would take to install it. I'd love a mid-engine S10 with a IRS.

i wonder how much you charge to swap a 4wd to 2wd 4l60e transmission
@ericsscout Жыл бұрын
Just came across this as I have a swap to do. Question is if so many pieces went back in before the output shaft goes in, is it necessary to take those pieces out before the ouput shaft is pulled?
@SouthpawAutoworks Жыл бұрын
It's not necessary to remove everything shown in this video. However, once the output shaft is removed, there's. a possibility that a thrust washer, or thrust bearing, may fall out of place, causing reassembly issues. When time permits, we will update this video, to reflect this.

What is the smooth silver looking sleeve on the 2wd shaft you removed? @ 17:10 in the video. It's not on most of the 2wd shafts I see for sale.
@SouthpawAutoworks2 жыл бұрын
That's the Output Shaft Sleeve. That sleeve contains an O-ring, at the open end of it. The O-ring installs inside of the bore (inside diameter, as opposed to the outside diameter). The O-ring seals against the machined surface on the driveshaft yoke. The sleeve is a press fit on the output shaft. It can be removed/installed (carefully) with a hammer. Extremely helpful. Thanks! Can the rear output shaft be pulled out without removing the center support and rear planetary gears?
@SouthpawAutoworks3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, it can be done without removing those items. In fact, it can be done with only the removal of the input sun gear (front) and the yellow output shaft snap ring (Obviously this statement assumes that the pump, input/reverse drum, 2-4 band, and the input drum have already been removed from the transmission).
