I have been a rebuilder for 35 years, and I have to say that you do a real good job! Back in the day it got so bad with part suppliers that I would ALWAYS measure my pump gears to make sure they were correct, and measure the depth of the gear pocket. "They" sent too many gears that were the wrong size. One story that happened to me, I was rebuilding a 325 trans in an eldorado circa 1979, and had to put new gears in it. They should have been .727 and were labeled as such. Put it in and it would have unexplained delayed engagements, falling out of gear, etc. I couldn't find anything wrong with it until I finally measured the new pump gears. They measured .721. Nice.

another brilliant education class from southpaw he is still the best you tube t400 mechanic ever, that fellow from precision is knowledgeable but you only learn very little about transmission other than problems and how to strip the boxes quickly, as a 52 year old qualified mechanic I don't really like quick work air tools tightening fragile thin aluminium components being treated that way.

When I made those videos, years ago, I had hoped to cover everything about that transmission. Unfortunately, I had to get it finished, and ran out of time to film more videos of it. I would love to pick up a TH400 that's not for a customer/friend, and film a whole series on it. It can be time-consuming to rebuild a transmission. However, it's far more time-consuming to film/edit/etc. But, I love sharing these videos with you all. It's a labor of love. Very soon, I will be starting a crowdfunding page, in an effort to generate the funds to pick up more transmissions that are not for resale/customers...but transmissions that will be used exclusively for video creation. Your videos are awesome...great help! Question...I'll be pressing-in a new TH400 pump stator shaft. Any recommendations besides aligning the oil hole in the stator shaft with the oil hole in the pump casting?...Also, when pressing the stator shaft in, I thought it may be a little luck for the fine splines of the stator shaft to align with the fine splines in the pump casting ID hole?...or will this engage while pressing-in without a problem?

That can of coors light is one of the most important shop supplies in any shop!! Best videos on a turbo 400 on KZbin!! Can you do some on a turbo 350???? There are a lot out there, but not as good as yours would be.

Thanks for the positive comment. There's a TH350 sitting on one of the benches in my shop. Kind of an odd one, too. The torque converter will not come out of the trans. The converter and output shaft will not rotate...appears to be locked up. When time permits, that TH350 be front and center of a future video. Happy New Year!

Hello, I really liked the explanation of the video. my th350 transmission, when I start the engine it makes a noise like metal hit, I changed the torque converter and the flex plate and it still persists. I took the pump apart and saw that the small gear has some movement. My question is do the gears in the pump make noise when they wear out? Thank you, I await your answer. i read somewhere about reducing the size of the feed hole for performance uses so that the fluid pressure used to fill thr comverter doesnt push too hard against the engines thrust bearings? whats your take on this?

ryan ridland Yes, you are correct…there are modifications that can be made to the trans. If a torque converter is over-pressurized, or overheated, it can balloon (or grow larger in overall size). This ballooning enables the “growing” torque converter to push against the thrust bearing in any engine; Chevy, Ford, Chrysler, etc. I will write an article on this subject, and put it on the Southpaw Auto Parts website. I was trained to replace the stator and tube as an assembly. Never tried to press one apart... The 4L60E, is another story (common practice to press the stator out, for replacement).

It's an arbor press. They're great for installing bushings, seals, and compressing clutch pack return springs. It drives the seals, and bushings, in nice and square. Here's a link to an arbor press. This one has a 12 inch working height. You don't want to go any smaller than a 10 inch working height....or you may not be able to fit all transmission drums into it. Great question. The pump moves oil. As oil encounters restrictions, and or dead-ends, throughout the transmission, the oil then builds pressure. The Pressure Regulator Valve (aka PR valve), keeps that pressure from getting too high. Oil pressures can get so high that the pump will self-destruct (there's other, less-catastrophic, down-sides, too). While excessively high pressures can cause problems, lower than needed pressures can cause problems, too. That's where the Boost Valve comes in. It works in conjunction with the PR valve. When needed, the Boost Valve raises the oil pressure. There are multiple oil pressures throughout the trans. One of them is used to apply the clutch packs (Line Pressure). If you're interested in learning more, and seeing how it all works, you'll want to check out the series listed below. The series is on the 4L60E....but, a lot of it can be applied to the TH400. Pump outer bushing and seal should be put in with loctite. Paint should be taken off the seal with a wire wheel before loctite.

Palmgren 3-Ton Arbor Press (12 inch working height): amzn.to/2Reqmyx ***Ratcheting style*** To all viewers/readers, if you're interested in knowing why I selected this arbor press, continue reading... I bought the press, featured in this video, from Enco, many years ago. I believe that they went out of business, or were bought out by a bigger company. With that said, I had to find another suitable option for you guys. This one I linked to above, also ratchets and has a similar working height(12 inches) The working height is the space between the ram and the table. The working height was an important deciding factor when I purchased my arbor press. HERE'S WHY: There are many other options for less money, but they don't typically feature enough "working height." In other words, there isn't a whole lot of room to place tall parts into the press. The pictures posted online make these presses look much larger than they actually are. EXAMPLE: The input drum from a 700R4/4L60/4L60E is roughly 7 inches tall. That's the aluminum part of the drum that would fit into the press, and does not include the input shaft length. Many of the less expensive arbor presses feature a working height of only 6-3/4 inch....1/4 shy of our 7" drum. THE WHOLE PICTURE: The press needs to offer enough room(working height) to fit both the transmission drum and the spring compressor. For my particular setup, stacking the 4L60 input drum and spring compressor together equals a height of roughly 9 inches. This easily fits within the working height of my press...which is 12 inches. QUESTION: While the 6-3/4" working height might(and I mean might) be adequate for the much smaller TH400 drums, why limit yourself from doing 4L60Es and numerous other popular automatic transmissions, that feature taller clutch drums?? Hi good sir I have a 98 Dodge Dakota that leaks transmission fluid out of the front of the tran really slow until it warms up and then it starts leaking a lot faster would that be the bushing on the pump that is out or the seal any information would be really great I am NOT a transmission person.

+Robert Simeon Sorry for the delay. Long story short, you will need reseal the entire pump. Chances are, it's just the seal....but it's always a good idea to replace the bushing when you replace the seal. In order to do so, the pump needs to be removed.

In my experience, the most common reason for a transmission pump to whine, is due to air getting sucked into the pump. This could be due to very low fluid level. This could also be due a worn out seal (one that lives between the filter and the pump...could be a metal clad seal, an o-ring, or a gasket.), that allows some air to be sucked into the pump. I'll share more info, as time permits...

Hello guitargube, Very clear explanations, but is it possible for you to confirm the measurements for each of the 2 small bushing ? I'm rebuilding my Daimler Double Six TH400 and I've made a mistake : I did not notice these two measures :-( Best regards

Are you asking about how far into the stator shaft these bushings need to be driven?

The front of the stator(splined end) is a depth of 0.228". The rear of the stator(pump rings) is a depth of 0.568". These were my original figures that I measured, before I removed the old bushings. You don't need to set the depth exactly to the specs listed above. Roughly 0.230"(instead of 0.228") and 0.570"(instead of 0.568") would suffice.

one thing i noticed you left out is that is you are using an after market pressure regulator spring. with the stock pressure regulator spring, there is a small horse shoe c clip that goes below the spring guide on the long valve. without this clip using a stock spring, it will lower the line pressure.

Great observation! I see what you mean. You are absolutely correct! In the event that the builder is using the stock Pressure Regulator valve spring(and not something supplied with an aftermarket reprogramming kit), the horse shoe clip must be used. Again, I repeat, the horse shoe clip must be used, for stock applications. If it's accidentally left out, then yes, the line pressure will be low...which will result in slipping clutches. Ultimately, missing this little detail can lead to BIG problems. In the event that the builder is utilizing an aftermarket reprogramming kit, like I was in this video, then follow the directions supplied with the kit...and use the springs that they supply. Great clarification inscoredbz. I'll update the video annotations/description. Thanks for your contribution! =)
