amazing Videos, you explain it very good. I have a question. I am working right now on my TH400 on the forward drum and the shaft sits loose in the drum. It can be moved back and forth arround 0.13" . What can I do? Do I need a new drum? Thank you and greetings from Germany.
@SouthpawAutoworks
@SouthpawAutoworks 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the positive comment. I'll do my best to help you, but I need some clarification regarding the shaft movement. With the drum sitting on the bench, and the shaft pointing straight up, does the shaft move from side to side? Or is it moving up and down. Or both? I'm assuming that it's moving up and down (0.130")...but, almost every time I assume anything, it gets me in trouble. I just want to make certain that we are on the same page.

@@SouthpawAutoworks thank you for the fast response and sry for my english, I hope you unterstand it. Yes you assume it right, I am talking about the axial direction. I saw another video about the forward drum and the guy said never ever press the shaft out of the drum. But what can I do if the shaft is loose in the drum. I think welding is not an option. Here you can see a picture of the drum 1.bp.blogspot.com/-5kfQ5x_3X2E/YAruptw_cHI/AAAAAAAABxY/ypsFCZWuzgQdfafGGE_9rv2FXVP5fQ8qQCLcBGAsYHQ/s892/forward%2Bdrum.PNG

I really enjoyed your video!!!! You gave me the courage to break down and inspect both my th400 for a long to short output shaft swap. (The long was a fresh rebuild but I needed a short:(.) I could actually really use your advise... I installed the short output shaft and everything was going great... until the beveled snap ring just won’t sit in... just short of the clearance. I played with it and pulled it out and over and over it was short of clearance. The only difference was the output shaft from long to short... any help is much appreciated.

By the way the snapping I’m talking about is the one that pushes the drum over the reverse band.

Dude, that's awesome! 2WD to 4WD. To answer your question, I'll have to ask you some questions, first. Please answer all of the questions. Thank you. 1). It sounds like we're talking about the snap ring for the Center Support. This link has an image of a center support. shotgunperformance.com.au/shop/turbo-400-bushed-center-support-for-high-hp-for-pro-mod-drum/. Are you trying to install the snap ring just above the Center Support? Note: If, for some reason, the link does not work...get on Google, do an image search for "TH400 Center Support." 2). Did you replace any bushings, while you had the trans apart? 3). There are thrust washers, and needle bearings, throughout the transmission. They like to fall out of their "home" during assembly. What are you using to keep them in place, while you assemble the unit? 4). How are you installing the Center Support, and all of the guts below it? One piece at a time? Or are you installing everything all at once? 5). How is the trans oriented while you are installing the parts? Is the trans laying flat on a bench? Is the trans being stood upright? I'll have a better idea of what you're up against when I know more. Look forward to hearing from.
@jesussandoval4318

Southpaw Autoworks Thank you for the fast response. 1. Yes, I’m talking about the beveled larger snapring that holds the center support back against the output shaft steel keeper and thrust washer. 2. I did not replace any bushings yet... but since I took it out multiple times (due to the slight clearance issue) I did notice the thrust washer had stress marks on all 4tabs so I ordered the thrust washer set from your link. (Now I’m waiting a week for arrival so I have time to figure this out.) 3. Normally I would be installing everything vertical, but since the thrust washer tabs would keep falling out I did it horizontal... I did not feel any separation of the output shaft to center support... once I seen the whole unit set back in and visually seen the tabs and thrust washer set back through the governed hole I turned it vertically and try to see if I could jiggle it in.(I initially forgot the thrust washer and keeper and it seemed to fit perfect, but then seen them on the bench and removed the unit to install them... that would have been ugly) 4. I’m installing the whole center support to the output shaft as a unit... I had removed the long output shaft via the snap ring and replaced it with short(all in all took 5min) and then had tried to install it right back in... at one pint maybe the drum/center support separated from the rest just ever so slightly (1/2”) so I sort of pushed them back to get her... didn’t seem as though it would hurt anything. 5. Initially it was upright... but the thrust washer keep falling off. So I went in carefully horizontally and seemed to have no issues until trying to install the beveled snap ring (bevel facing out towards the grunt pump) and noticed the clearance issue. 6. Thank you so much... The output shaft went in easy and the snap ring fit like it belonged. I appreciate your help.
@jesussandoval4318

Southpaw Autoworks also I just wanted to add since the rebuilt transmission (the one with the long tail) had just been rebuilt I did not take anything apart. All I did was remove everything in order. The older transmission I did take everything in A part to inspect as your video showed. But I did not use anything as it was more of a learning. The only thing I replaced was the short output shaft on the non rebuilt one to the TH 400. The original short shaft TH 400 was a 68 Firebird and the newer rebuilt tranny was out of a 69 grand Prix with a 455 in front of it. I hope this helps... and thank you sooooooo much!!!

Thank you for addressing my questions. I appreciate you being thorough. I've read both of your responses. Regarding # 3: You can use Assembly Goo (Linked in the video description) or petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to hold washers and bearings in place...while you stack guts into the vertically-mounted transmission. I prefer the Assembly Goo as it doesn't melt so easily during the summer time, like Vaseline does. They make a Blue and a Green Assembly Goo. The blue is great for lubricating lip seals, assembling pumps, and also holding needle bearing assemblies/washers in place. The green one is more tacky/sticky than the blue stuff. Good for holding heavier objects together. Regarding # 4: I'm having trouble understanding how exactly you're installing the guts. I wish I had a video on how to install this. Here's a video I found. It's not complete, but a start. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqG5mGt_fa6ja6s. Regarding the Origin of the output shafts My Thoughts: 1). It's possible that you could have a needle bearing assembly (bearing and two races) installed upside down....doing so creates interference, as opposed to endplay. There's a 3-piece needle bearing assembly that lives between the output shaft you replaced, and the ring gear that lives just above (or in front of) the output shaft). It's possible to install this bearing assembly incorrectly. 2). It's possible that the Low Roller, One-Way clutch, is not installed all the way...creating an interference fit. Here's what I mean by that... The rear band wraps around a drum that's called the Front Planet. That drum has a one-way clutch housed in it (Metal rollers that have springs that are accordion shaped). The Center Support has the inner race for that one-way clutch. The Front Planet and the Center Support must be, for lack of better words, mated together. Hold the drum, and push the Center Support into the Drum, while rotating the Center Support. The Center Support should lock one direction (clockwise/counter-clockwise), and freewheel (or spin) the other direction. When doing this, you may notice the two parts come together. Even a little bit, may make all of the difference. 3). There's a selective thrust washer (3-tang) that lives between the Output Shaft and the rear of the transmission case. There are 6 different thicknesses ranging from 0.076" to 0.116". All transmissions parts are built to a tolerance...a minimum thickness and a maximum thickness. Your new output shaft may be thicker than the original one. Measure the thickness of the thrust washer at the rear of the case. What thickness is it? Note: If you don't know how to use a dial caliper, to take fine measurements like this, here's a video I previously made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3OuiYJvoZllorM

Why are two tabs on the steels have a "V" and the rest don't?
@SouthpawAutoworks
@SouthpawAutoworks 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why the manufacturer/engineers did that. Honestly, it's not very useful for this clutch pack/transmission. The Low/Reverse steels, in a 700R4/4L60E have a "V" in one of the tabs, too. However, this one is useful. It's used for locating purposes. Those steels must be clocked in a certain direction...or the steels will not fit into the transmission case.
