Coming up… Another helping from Two of rock and roll’s greatest storytellers. Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman wrote the biggest 60s and 70s hits when they were part of the Guess Who...They had already had a couple of hits with These Eyes and Laughing when they released a monster record in the early 70s American Woman that included two #1 hits and a top 5. They were American Woman and No Sugar Tonight and No Time. Randy Bachman wrote a dear john letter to his girlfriend and decided that it might work as a song so he put one of the most recognizable guitar licks to it that he admits he lifted from another band of the time. The story of a 70s rock standard is told by two legends next as well as a run-in with a legend when he was a kid next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. Stories and history you won’t find anywhere else. Today we’ve got the tried and true, one of the best storytelling duos of the rock era on a classic song that we all know by heart. It’s Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman formerly of the Guess Who… the vocalist and guitarist who wrote some of the greatest classics of their time and were almost vastly underrated.
It’s the story of their top 5 70s smash No Time.
It came from their classic 1970 album American Woman. It’s such an iconic riff. The song started out as a Dear John Letter also we get the story of how an unplanned jam session that the band was riffing on to pass the time in between songs at their live show became the impetus for the classic record. We also get an amazing story about Randy’s meeting with destiny.. when he met a trailblazer as a young kid and the impact it had on him as a guitarist. Always entertaining with these guys. Let’s get into it.
How crazy is it that Burton Cummings who’s one of the greatest rock singers ever and Randy Bachman who is the only rocker besides Paul McCartney to have a #1 hit with two different bands are not in the rock hall of fame? Word on the street is that The man behind the rock halls scheme hates them and along with Grand Funk Railroad, Motley Crue, and Phil Collins will never let them be inducted. It’s insane.
Make sure to Leave us a comment about this double-sided song and about the Guess Who with the great duo of singer Burton Cumming, quite possibly the most underappreciated singers of the 70s, and Randy Bachman who would go on to form another multiplatinum juggernaut in Bachman Tuners Overdrive or BTO for short… What are your memories of these songs and bands?
