Charlie was an American singer, musician & songwriter. His career spanned over 5 decades. His music covered a lot of different genres including southern & country rock, country, bluegrass, blues & gospel. He was best known for this number-one country hit "The Devil Went Down To Georgia". Some of his other songs were "Uneasy Rider", "The South's Gonna Do It Again", "Long Haired Country Boy", "In America", "The Legend Of Wooley Swamp", "Still In Saigon" etc.

This was recorded at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, a summer venue in Upstate NY. The back of the concert hall is open and there is a huge sloping lawn where people could also sit. I guarantee the lawn was packed because you can hear the fans screaming from their lawn chairs. Been there many times with my daughter to see the ballet.

Saw Charlie live many times from the 70s on. Last time I believe he was 75 years old and still bringing it hard to the extent that he literally shredded his bow on the ending solo of this song and actually went to a second bow to finish it - at 75 years old!!! He was also as good a guitarist as he was a fiddler, although he’s best known for his fiddling. You have to check out Long Haired Country Boy, Drinking My Baby Goodbye, The Legend Of Woolley Swamp and Still In Saigon (tribute to Viet Nam vets).

I was in the US Navy’s Nuclear Power Program and was finishing the last 6 months of a two year training program, learning to operate an actual submarine nuclear power plant called S3G that was built in Ballston Spa, NY and I was renting a mobile home in Saratoga. My car had Florida plates on it and when I parked and got out, a girl pulling in beside me said “you must really like Charlie Daniels to drive all the way to upstate NY to see him”.

I saw Charlie Daniels Live about a dozen times here in NY. Country Rock, as we called it, was a huge genre back in the 70's. Charlie was still touring up until his death in 2020. His music is amazing and his lyrics are profound. Some of his music is brilliant story-telling. Others are powerfully patriotic. RIP Charlie, and thanks for the music.

Charlie Daniels said Bob Dylan made his career. Dylan had a series of dates booked at a recording studio. The/an intended guitar player wasn’t available on the first day in the studio and Charlie Daniels filled in. When he was leaving (apparently obviously not coming back) at the end of the day Dylan asked the producer(?) where Charlie Daniels was going. They said he was just a fill-in. Dylan said, ~”I want him here”. Dylan then put Charlie Daniels’ name in the liner notes of the subsequent album (apparently Dylan was somewhat known for detailed liner note credits). Charlie Daniels said that really boosted his career.

Charlie was told by a famous violinist (not sure which one), that there is a great difference between a fiddle player and a violinist. So, Charlie played a classical piece on his fiddle (violin - it's a fiddle for certain kinds of music and a violin for other kins). At the end, Charlie asked, "now, can you play fiddle?" The other musician had to concede that Charlie was the better musician.

Massive hit in the 1970s. I went out and bought the 45 RPM single to it and played it a lot. People would recite the lyrics to it sometimes as well. You heard it on the radio all the time. He's got a lot of great songs. Another one of his that I really love, probably even more than this one, it's called Long Haired Country Boy. It's got a totally different vibe. It's so laid back. But it's funny. And it also says some serious things as well but does it in a funny way and that's another one that's just really fun to sing along to. We used to play it in my honky-tonk band and it was a big crowd favorite.

This genre is Country Rock. Bluegrass is acoustic string instruments - guitar, violin, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, standup bass fiddle, no drums or electric guitars. Completely different sound than country rock, whose songs often have crossover success between both the rock and country charts, as this song did. Would enjoy seeing you react to authentic bluegrass though.
