I turned my kids to Rush. I took my boy to couple of Rush concerts. In one concert there was a man with his son standing up on balcony to right of stage . Neil sent his sticks to the kid at the end of the show. No one noticed that ... I think we were in San Antonio. Some lucky kid.

Rush broke out in Cleveland on WMMS when I was a tween so they were dominant in the soundtrack of my life; and all their lyrics about the struggles to find yourself, to come to terms with life, science, technology, art, commercial culture, with a common thread of the theme of personal and artistic integrity running through all of that work ... well ... it formed me until I was at least 20; so watching you react, it accesses all of that for me (mirror neurons?), and I feel things I haven't felt in 40 years ... The beginning “ominous’ feel is them describing musically the gathering clouds. Then the gentle part is when the clouds break and shafts of light start breaking through the clouds (those shafts are called Jacobs Ladder due to the Bible I believe). No matter how technical they were they were ALWAYS subservient to the story of the song. Showing their skills was incidental.

The whole PW album is a killer and this is just another masterpiece, a lesson in how to build an atmosphere that perfectly matches the subject matter. Theres never been another group like them nor will there ever be Dream Theatre exist because of Rush

@@scottshields113 Is it me or Neil Peart's playing was better in the 80's than in the 2010's? I know his playing was stiffer and less articulated, but his groove was more interesting. In the 2010's his playing just felt more mainstream and less artistic.

@@alexis-llemay8064 I think his eighties catalogue is his most interesting. He has said himself is when developed confidence in his playing. His control and precision and not overplaying is on a different level than anyone then in rock drumming. Plus his lyrics were best then and really mixed well with his rhytym approach. But later career after Freddie his mindset changed in approach to timing. I do think his feel improved but at the cost of his more methodical composition. Plus he was getting older so besides the rigorous demand playing at that level he was always searching for something new to try or improve. But come showtime. He still gave it all to his performance. Thats what I did like about his later drumming

If you are already blown away by these guys definitely go back a bit..Hemispheres, 2112, Farewell to Kings..Alex is so underrated, Geddy is a madman..singing, playing bass and keys with his feet with his Taurus pedal. So when you hear keyboards and bass at the same time..its live not overdubbed. And Neil...what can you even say about that man? Like you said in another video...they can switch up tempos and time signatures and you dont even notice it...unless you are a musician. I can go on forever. Im 54 and they are the reason I started playing guitar. They have so many amazing songs you will never get tired of their music. 19 studio albums, 11 live albums..crazy. Thanks for the reactions I dont know why older fans would talk shit for you liking them..thats stupid.

This is all that was left of Hemispheres. That particular shuffle they create in the 7/8 part in the C section is inhereted directly from the sweet-ass groove after the guitar solo in LaVillaStrangiato (the nuances are best heard on the studio version). Nowhere else in rock and roll can this type of groove be felt.

Man, does this track tell a story. What a denouement from the 7:00 mark on. The song builds to a wonderful crescendo and drives home its point with gripping repetition. Rush is once again on top its game with this great song.

I am one of those '40 years guys' and I am ecstatic that the younger generations are joining in on the ride. Have fun with the rabbit hole that is Rush. My only sorrow it that you can't experience Rush live. It's an experience that will last you a lifetime. I did it 4 times since 1976, and each is an indelible memory I still carry today. A lot of people will recommend checking out their stuff from the 70's and early 80's (which is still worth doing), but honestly to get the best appreciation for how they grew as performers and musicians, you can't beat anything from the Snakes and Arrows Tour (2007) and newer. I honestly think musicianship wise they peaked on their final tour (2015). They aged like fine wine, and the maturity they played with in the latter years of their career is basically unrivaled by anyone in Rock and Roll. Thanks for doing all of these reactions!

One of the great things about Rush is, and this is what I mentioned in the Natural Science video, they can play the same thing a few times in a row but the drums will do something different each time and make it sound unique, keeping the interest.

Another Great choice. Thanks for sharing. I'm not a musician but I loved Rush so much that I bought a cheap Casino keyboard so I could play Rush songs. I finally figured this 1 out a long ago. Also I remember I was delivering pizza one night way back in 80s and I was in black part of town. I was listening to this very song around 7:50 min. there were some old men standing on corner talking. As I got close they listened and then started to dance and gave me a very friendly look smile and wave...they loved it. Left an impression on me. Like good music has no border etc.

I live in the high Sierras, and back in the late 60's/early 70's it was a pretty isolated area. Rock and roll was hard to find. You had to wait until after dark and hope a good station out of Sacramento would have their signal bounce on clouds and get in here. Rush was unheard here. I found them by having a friend come over and ask me to listen to them, and then teach him how to play "Xanadu" on the guitar. In listening to them, and learning the song, I became entranced by their music. When I read the album notes I was blown away to find they were a trio! A power trio in the strictest definition. An amazing band then, and still as strong, as masterful, today. Seeing them live was an experience I'll never forget, and I have seen thousands of concerts over the years as I was a stagehand in my working years. Now, retired, I still feel like I did the first time I listened and enjoy watching younger people "discover" the band. Long live Rush!

The heaviness in the beginning is like the "thunder clouds" brewing into a storm, then the middle part is the parting of the sky revealing Jacob's Ladder. The dream theater groove (before there was DT) is interesting as Ged and Alex throw an extra note in there making into an odd time signature and Neil does his thing, but it still sounds smooth, and most people wouldn't notice. That is the beauty of Rush, sneakily complex but listenable.

My favorite rush song has to be 2112. An amazing 20 minute song that feels like 2 because of the way it sucks you in. Plus if you aren't a huge Metallica fan, you might prefer the Megadeth. On the album Rust in Peace the lead guitarist Marty Friedman proved himself as one of the most technical and melodic guitarist in and out of metal.

The Permanent Waves tour was my first Rush concert. Over the years there have been a few live recordings of Jacobs Ladder. I have to say my favorite is from the R40 tour. The bands maturity and technical skills really shined on on this song.

These reactions just make me smile ... my own reactions are similar, even after listening to them for more than 40 years. I first saw them live for their Permanent Waves tour. I had the flu and could barely stand but after listening to the album nothing was keeping me away. I went on to see them every year for over a decade, from sophomore in high school all the way through university and beyond. I think I saw them live about 20 times before the new music died with the Professor (RIP NP). It's great to see that so many decades later they still cause the same gape jawed amazement I felt watching them.

Thanks for reacting to Jacob's Ladder. This one grows on you with time (at least it did with me). As you become more familiar with the time signatures and figure out what they're doing, you can begin to anticipate what's next. The 2-5-3-5, 2-5-3-5 beat pattern in the beginning is one of my favorites ever from them. And the lyrics, (though they are few) really paint an awesome picture of a passing thunderstorm and the contrast of the storm's energy with the sun's energy. This song is for all of the storm chasers and weather nerds out there. Personally, I really love the sort of classical Spanish scale progression during the "storm" with just that little extra half-step note/beat in the walk down. It reminds me of a bull fighter, in the ring with a bull, trying to avoid being gored, but too enthralled by the adrenaline rush to leave the ring. Must be how storm chasers feel, when they're dancing with an EF4 or EF5 in Tornado Alley.

I was able to catch their Clockwork Angels and R40 tour, and it was amazing to literally see the age of people from 6 to 60+ there! When you get to 2112, I think you will enjoy "The Discovery" for sure. When you have gotten your fill of the early stuff, make sure you don't forget their new offerings such as Main Monkey Business, Hope, or The Garden! Repetitive is good as long as things are continuously building or evolving, which Rush does very well. There's a long repetitive section in Cygnus X-1, but it works well because it's constantly evolving.

Hey Tim.......I am thrilled you and the younger generation are discovering the mind blowing abilities of these three musicians. You have listened to many of the longer songs......and there are a few more for you to review! The obvious longer ones left are Hemispheres (18:00), 2112 (21:00), The Camera Eye (11:00) and Cygnus x-1 (11:00). They actually play Cygnus x-1 and Cygnus x-1 book 2 (Hemispheres \) back to back on the Hemispheres Tour of 1978-79. 30 minutes in a row. They close the 1977 album A Farewell To Kings with Cygnus x-1 (song about a journey to and through a black hole) and at the end of the song the enter the black hole......The next album, Hemispheres 1978, they open the album with them coming out of the black hole into an 18 minute plus song. The songwriting and musician ship is so far ahead of its' time and so much more complex and involved than virtually any other band ever. PLEASE review one or all of the above.......Hemispheres album is the one with La Villa Strangiato. Only 4 songs on that album........legendary.

What I've always enjoyed most about this song is after the "light streams down in bright unbroken beams" part, Neil's drum pattern is never the same twice. The interplay between snare and kick drum is the stuff of legend. Have listened to this track for forty years and I still get goose bumps during that part of the song.
