Incredible how tape echo units are so sought after now and how the price had gone up so much. Back in the late 70s and early 80s the Maestro Echoplex would sell $60 in the used market and $200 new. Back then, everyone was getting rid of the tape echoes in favor for the digital rack mount delays. Good thing I kept three of them in my collection, but regret selling one in the 90s for $90.

I realize this is an old thread but I have to say this when people compare then and now prices. $200 in 1972 is equivalent to $1350 today. $60 in 1972 is equivalent to about $400 today. Add to the fact that the originals are not as plentiful &”$800-1000 is about right for vintage equipment.

If you just want a delay pedal, you can easily and should look elsewhere. Sounds great, looks great, but $900 for a delay pedal?? Only rich folks and rock stars will be able to afford it. Not to mention, that tape will eventually wear out and/or break. That'll be even more $$$. At least you'll have that sweet natural delay sound while you're living in a cardboard box by the river.

I agree. it's because echoplexs use 1/4 inch tape compared to this one's 1/8 inch cassette tape. keep an eye on ebay or Reverb.com for an echoplex around $500 bucks. orbit electronics does a full overall for $200 something. then you have 'thee tape sound' and hundreds of dollars left in your pocket!

the sound quality is not on par with the 1/4 inch tape echos. if you want this sound look up the 'space case tape echo' that uses cassette tapes. you would never have to worry about not being able to find replacement cartridges. I still can't get over how trex justifies a $900 price tag when the competition offers better sound quality for that price range.
@arensel848 жыл бұрын
+skchalivetlnd last I checked the space case starts at $500. the piece of mind in never having to worry about replacing the tape cartridge is indeed a great selling point for a true tape delay, albeit lo-fi tape sounding repeats.
@harrymerchant89447 жыл бұрын
Yes it is and clearly from what you are saying you haven't been near one. I have one, and have owned many older tape delays and sold them all due to the massive hassle with noise and breakages. This one is way way better. It works every time, the quality of the feedback and the diffusion of the delays is excellent as is the overall sound. I also use it on analog synths, damn damn brilliant!..

@pickle9658 жыл бұрын
+arensel84 True, but tap tempo on a tape echo in stomp box format is pretty sweet.
@arensel848 жыл бұрын
+pickle965 I agree. however, they really should have gone with 1/4 inch tape like all the famous echo chambers. the 'space case tape echo' also uses 1/8 tape but let's you use real cassettes. this way you never have to worry about trex discontinuing their proprietary cartridges. space case also starts at $500.

That awkward point in history when we slowly realise that stuff from the past that was clunky, mechanical, expensive and unreliable wasn't, in the grand scheme of things, all that great all the time. It's just that we like things from the past because that was when we were young and the world was supposedly, a better place, or we are young and oldies tell us things in the past were better, and we believe them. We pretend that listeners will be listening out for a delay that is slightly different than another delay and judging things on that basis. Or even hearing it in the first place. "If only I had different gear, people would like my music more and I'd have a lot more fans." And now companies like Strymon can make a really decent fist of replicating that nice, but old junk, at a relatively cheaper price, with lots of other fantastic fancy shit, what the hell is the point of producing one that doesn't have all the good bits about the old ones, like tape size, but has all the crap maintenance and cost insanity and doesn't do half the stuff that an El Capistan, Timeline or similar can do. If you can plug into the past, you can lead some people by the nose.

Strymon El Capistan still sounds far better for far less money and you don't have to monkey around with actual tape and tape heads. To each his own, but this thing looks a bit gimmicky to me. They could have just done a 2016 version of the original Echoplex and maybe a handful go people would want to buy that. Just like some will shell out serious coin to get a Fender Reverb unit (or Dr Z Z-verb)

If you think the tea Rex replicator does analog?? It has a digital potentiometer chip inside of it. Fast clock I haven’t found it yet but I’m pretty sure that digital digital chip means a fast clock. Tea Rex will not write me back about it. I called Larry he didn’t know anything he told me to call tea Rex in Holland. These type of brushless Dc motors. It’s recommended that they have at least a 15 kHz pulse width modulation wave to control the motor speed. I am really not into all these high frequencies. Digital need some serious help using analog filters that are at least 16 Pole. The digital LSB must be chorused with 30 analog vibrato machines from 1 to 20 Hz. This will make the digital LSP into well I won’t be telling you because none of your people exist and I’ve never met any intelligent people in my life that even know how to do any math or anything and all you guys are a bunch of robots that are not susceptible to electromagnetic frequencies that make me puke and cannot hear infinitely high frequencies but I can and I can easily explain to you why and I have never met anybody that’s intelligent in the entire world and I figured out digital and analog and you people are false advertising you told me you promised me that the high frequencies were filtered out from the digital signal. This is a complete lie and people have no idea what you’re talking about and what’s happening in the higher parts of the spectrum. If you have an oversampling Digital filter then all of those 6 MHz sample rate harmonics are going to continue up to the slew rate of the opera probably in the gigahertz range. I really need to talk to somebody who actually knows something about the frequency spectrum and I have never seen anybody on the planet that knows anything compared to this guy name Markus. Everybody hates Markus. They also turn the other way. The high frequencies are gone. What are you people dreaming. If you think there’s a tea Rex replicator sounds analog, sweet dreams baby
