4:02, a good analogy for this is like in chess, only the grandmasters should be creating new openings, anyone else in that scenario would do something wrong and mess up. Essentially, unless you're really good, you should follow the already good openings.

Yeah and there is absolutely nothing wrong with following those openings, or if we go back to music, taking a chord progression from a song you love and see what you can build from there! Great point.

MixedInKey Studio. Tells you the key of whatever's being played into the DAW. You're welcome.

Okay, I am genuinely not sure if you missed the entire point of the video or if you're joking.

This is why theoretical knowledge mixed with using your ears to listen are both equally important. They feed each other if you do it right, and it can create awesome things :) It drives me bonkers when someone states the key of a song based on the first pitch or chord and I'm like...Y'ALL, NO...that's NOT how keys work! I've found you can absolutely get into the weeds in either direction...either too much theory and you overthink what your trying to create with it, or it's all ears and listening and you have no idea what's actually going on theoretically, so if you did create something great, you have no idea how you did it and you can't recreate it. Granted exact recreation isn't possible, so I guess a better term might be consistency. With both theory and good ears, you can both create and know what's going on, which leads to more consistent output.

damn, that GoT reference 😀 I've never understood the sentiment that knowing music theory would somehow disrupt the creativity. And I can't wrap my head around how that rumor has spread all these years. You would never think that knowing the rules of a language would somehow limit your use of that language. But when it comes to music, it's somehow a badge of honor if you're "self-taught" or if you don't know any music theory. Having said that, I really have to brush up on my music theory 😀 ALSO, what would be the most important thing in music theory to learn, if I want to get some riffs? Kinda sick of people telling me that I have 0 riffs. 🤣

I cannot agree more with all that you said. I think the biggest issue is the idolization of people like Hendrix and Cobain for the wrong reasons. Assuming they didn't know music theory just because they didn't have a formal education is pretty short sighted. About your riffs issue: not much we can do. Only solution is to buy more guitars and hope that the pickups don't matter.

I'm an atheist but I breathe music theory and I don't read music. Some people pick up theory and some don't 🤪
