Thank you. I used to do a lot of vocal stacking, but honestly never really thought to much about adding distortion for a heavier sound. I guess I'm afraid I'd create mud, since I'm not really a mixing engineer.
@mammothaudioengineering3 күн бұрын
Totally understand, distortion can be weird in that way. I think if you treat distortion as a very last step, it can enhance a lot, if the song calls for it. Using a good distortion plugin with some EQ or at least filtering functions goes a long way, hence why Decapitator is such a favourite amongst many engineers. It allows you to cut out both lows and highs and distort only the midrange and that can be genuinely awesome for metal!

I started with an AX2, traded to an FM3 and now have the FM9. The only thing I noticed was the presets were more refined on the newer gear. You're right about the sound though. You can dial in a sound on the AX2 that will equal anything on the FM9. But the FM9 is a nice complete footswitch. Can't comment on the QuadC or Kemper because I've never used them, but they sound great when Kiko or Gilbert use them, so...I guess it really comes down to making money and feeding the kiddos.
@mammothaudioengineering6 күн бұрын
Agree with all that - the newer hardware makes things easier to use / dial in. The AXE2's UI is infamously bad, especially if you try using it without a computer. Units like the QC and Helix definitely fix that. Your point about the FM9 being complete also is a huge plus, given that most people will need some sort of footswitch to use it live. Hence, why I decided to get a Helix last year instead of replacing my AXE2's MIDI controller. I'll keep the AXE at home and use the Helix live.

This is why theoretical knowledge mixed with using your ears to listen are both equally important. They feed each other if you do it right, and it can create awesome things :) It drives me bonkers when someone states the key of a song based on the first pitch or chord and I'm like...Y'ALL, NO...that's NOT how keys work! I've found you can absolutely get into the weeds in either direction...either too much theory and you overthink what your trying to create with it, or it's all ears and listening and you have no idea what's actually going on theoretically, so if you did create something great, you have no idea how you did it and you can't recreate it. Granted exact recreation isn't possible, so I guess a better term might be consistency. With both theory and good ears, you can both create and know what's going on, which leads to more consistent output.

4:02, a good analogy for this is like in chess, only the grandmasters should be creating new openings, anyone else in that scenario would do something wrong and mess up. Essentially, unless you're really good, you should follow the already good openings.
@mammothaudioengineering22 күн бұрын
Yeah and there is absolutely nothing wrong with following those openings, or if we go back to music, taking a chord progression from a song you love and see what you can build from there! Great point.

damn, that GoT reference 😀 I've never understood the sentiment that knowing music theory would somehow disrupt the creativity. And I can't wrap my head around how that rumor has spread all these years. You would never think that knowing the rules of a language would somehow limit your use of that language. But when it comes to music, it's somehow a badge of honor if you're "self-taught" or if you don't know any music theory. Having said that, I really have to brush up on my music theory 😀 ALSO, what would be the most important thing in music theory to learn, if I want to get some riffs? Kinda sick of people telling me that I have 0 riffs. 🤣
@mammothaudioengineering24 күн бұрын
I cannot agree more with all that you said. I think the biggest issue is the idolization of people like Hendrix and Cobain for the wrong reasons. Assuming they didn't know music theory just because they didn't have a formal education is pretty short sighted. About your riffs issue: not much we can do. Only solution is to buy more guitars and hope that the pickups don't matter.

A few people have commented that they don't think BMTH are metal. For those people I have the following question: What is metal to you and why does BMTH not fulfill that criteria in your opinion? For a genre that prides itself on being welcoming, I would love to hear an actual explanation for the gatekeeping here. Genuinely curious!
@sammy-whirl8500Ай бұрын
I don't think metal as a genre has particular pride in inclusivity. That's a silly generalization. The problem with bmth is they're just kind of lame sellouts. I feel this way because their oldest material was more up my alley.

@@mammothaudioengineering I think Amo and That's The Spirit were far too experimental to be considered metal. Metal can be many different things I won't lie but I think BMTH have just moved too far away from anything resembling heavy metal. BMTH are absolutely trend-setters. That means many times they are going to miss because they're putting out stuff that is new and risky, so some people won't like it. Nex Gen is an album that hits at exactly the right time: it's cutting edge, and dropped at exactly the right time to be influential.

metalcore/deathcore is very much on the rise with bands like Lorna Shore, Slaughter to Prevail. If the argument revolves against stagnation then it is really more of an audience issue. There is plenty of creative music out there, just refer to black metal and it's insane amount of sub-genres.
@ozzer2010Ай бұрын
There great bands but nowhere near making metal/death core on the rise. They'll stay in their bubble.
@BMdegenАй бұрын
@@ozzer2010 heavier music is by itself in it's own bubble. I have no idea what metric y'all are using to weight success.
@mammothaudioengineeringАй бұрын
Success can be measured in numerous ways. I think one fair way would be impact in the charts. Years ago, somehow Whitechapel landed a top 10 billboard album with Our Endless War. I am not sure any deathcore or deathmetal band is doing that. But to be also fair here: I was not talking about the heavier aspects of metal in this video. Comparing a very pop heavy band like BMTH to Lorna Shore is just silly when the topic is drawing in more people from outside the genre. Very few people are going to cite as Lorna Shore or Slaughter to Prevail as a gateway band to heavier music.
@BMdegenАй бұрын
@@mammothaudioengineeringYeah, fusion genres like trap metal which got quite popular 5-6 years ago may be a way to go. Billboard though is a craaazy place with many one-offs, spotify metrics may be more reliable.
@mammothaudioengineeringАй бұрын
@@BMdegen Yeah, completely agree. I think just like in the 00s, when band's like Linkin Park incorporated things from outside of metal into their music, it's gonna be something like that. It just has to be done well, because fans and listeners alike can absolutely tell when it's done cheaply and without actual love for those outside genres. The craft around it is so important.
