I've been playing Floyd for 10 years obsessively, and I just realized that the most important part of his tone is learning to use the whammy bar almost everytime he holds the bends up to get his sound bang on. Especially if this song, but even in his huge bends in Time or Another Brick....if you havent tried it out yet, trust me.
@2112Relayer4 жыл бұрын
I noticed in a live video that David used the whammy bar for the vibrato on this song. It was a later video from a solo concert, so wasn't sure if it was something he switched over to doing as he got older or if it was played that way originally. In my opinion, it's the only way to reliably hold those bends and apply the necessary vibrato.
@goldenultra3 жыл бұрын
Bend and use Whammy at the same time it sounds like Gilmour would try this at the very least. He probably has tried everything else.

I have to say, out of all the guitar teachers on youtube you have to be my favourite. Always concise and to my knowledge, one of the most accurate. I also really enjoy how you show what the musicians do in live recordings. Cheers
@ChristianRThomas6 жыл бұрын
These are really good lessons. Though I am a beginner at guitar (and am ignoring the opening solo for the moment for that reason), I design speakers for a living, so can't be said to be a beginner at music. What sets this apart is that these lessons actually sound like the original music - which I tend to know by heart. It makes life so much easier when what you are being taught lines up with what you know, and then you just have to produce that yourself. And this also goes for all the little inflections and nuances that you know are there, which aren't scooted over or missed, and that adds up to a much more 'musical' result - which also keeps you on the right lines.

Gilmour, you broke my high e string.
@willhart98346 жыл бұрын
The Man You need extra light strings. I use Ernie Ball "Extra" (not "Super") Slinkies as many musicians use because they are highly bendable and stay in tune very well once they are broken in as any strings. Although he uses his signature brand of GHS Boomers which are only like $6
@ltxr99735 жыл бұрын
I find it impossible to play Gilmour bends with light strings. You always have to bend them so far with less tension.

Loved the lesson! This proves how cool Dave Gilmour is. You don’t need to be a shredder and death metal player or whatever to be good (like how loads of people are obsessed with shredding). All you need to have is soul to wow the crowd.

For me, most of the guitar riffs I see and listen to look complicated and difficult, but are really not that bad when you try and learn them. When I first saw this video I thought I'd never be able to play it, but after a few hours today I just about have the opening. Now some will get it in a few minutes, but for me, I'm stoked.

Thanks for the lesson! the opening solo is easy to play but hard to memorize... I'll have to play it over and over many times haha
@linda_guitar88696 жыл бұрын
Memorizing stuff is my difficulty too! I signed up to play this whole lead part, in November, with a musicians' collective that does different cover shows every month. I'll give myself a couple of weeks to decide whether I can actually memorize it all by then, so that if I have to back out, there will be time for someone else to learn it. (Some of the guys in the group already know it, anyway. We did a Pink Floyd show last year, and someone played it.) I had already learned most of SOYCD when I was in college, so this will be a matter relearning it. But .... the old memory cells just don't work like they used to!
