Pentatonics were my lightbulb moment back in the 60s. I didn't know it, I was playing along with ten years after and later found that I was playing pentatonics

Another great one, very useful. Your chord- scale connector video was a major breakthrough for me and it changed a lot. But honestly I have lightbulb moments in every of your lessons.😁 I have made a huge step forward since I´m watching your videos! Thank you for that!

Well explained Blue. I wish this video was available when I was a beginner would have saved me lots of time. I think triads and their relation to caged is what gave me my best understanding of the fretboard.
@GuitarLessonsVancouver Жыл бұрын
Thanks Charles! I agree triads are so useful. I should do another one on triads eventually.

Great lesson as usual. The most impactful thing I ever did was to memorize the notes on the 5th and 6th strings and the first and forth pentatonic shapes. Plugging these 2 shapes in for minor or major opens many doors!

For sure that helps so much. Well done 😎

This is excellent Blue....thank you. I'm plotting the patterns of the Major 3rd and the minor 3rd as well, and once I get them completely sorted, I'll move on to other intervals. My lightbulb moment was when I discovered the natural minor scale, and all the doors that opened up for me. I still can't use it properly, but it has many ,more options for bends etc etc
@GuitarLessonsVancouver Жыл бұрын
Thanks @realjumper! That's a good plan. And yeah, playing the full minor scale gives some really cool extra character :)

I created my own map and I keep improving on it. It was a very significant game changer for me. Basically thebkeybis to reduce the visual data you need to process in order to re allocate the mind resources towards idea generation and expression (finishing touch.) The way guitar is too often thought leads to data paralysis. Instead we want an ideas diarrhea. You do a great job by the way. I grabbed a concept from you to add to my own stuff. It was an automatic fit, ready to implement. Great site.

Thank you! That's a good idea. I agree, the fretboard and guitar needs to be learned in "chunks" not all at once. It's too much all at once and then we don't retain it.

Hey Blue and all! 👋 This is a great lesson! Use that major third, and that major six to bring out that minor pentatonic, /minor blues scale… This really adds feeling through those passing notes! Thank you!

By knowing the note patterns on a guitar neck scale I can work out what the notes are on a piano keyboard faster than remembering where the notes are on a keyboard. i.e. (For me) it's quicker to work out the major third of Db on the guitar neck and transpose that to the keyboard than it is to remember what the maj third interval is for Db ... that's because the guitar 'map' doesn't change shape (unlike the scale maps for a piano keyboard) ... really helped me with learning to play piano and know what keys match the notes in the scale and key centre)

As always simple and perfect thank you. For me, the light bulb moment was the time I realized to learn scale I can change minor and major pentatonic by adding 2 notes to make other scales/modes I just need to remember where 2 notes are, and during soloing use that for example in Dorian I need to know where 2 and 6 are in minor pentatonic

Excellent lesson. I've been having light bulb moments from you and some other teachers on how to mix minor and major pentatonics. That really started to open things up. I just received my copy of "Guitar Soloing Like a Pro" yesterday and I'm looking to doing a deep dive into it.

Hi Blue I find your method of teaching is very clear and hits on details that click with my way of thinking thank you for the great videos. Do you think touching on how to develop rhythm would be a video you could make? this is where I struggle the most I think. I am seriously considering purchasing your books.
@GuitarLessonsVancouver Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Let me think about how I can do a video on that. Some topics don't always work well on YT. Rhythm is something easier to work on with a teacher, My strumming book has lots on that subject, or do you mean specifically rhythm in solos?

Yet another GREAT video, Blue! 😊 I'm sorry that I'm not a patron right now, cuz I'm going through a ruff time with dental stuff... due to an unscrupulous dentist. (Actually, he USED to be a dentist, but was unlicensed when he did my implants, and he screwed 'em up (and me) BIG TIME. So, I'm paying out the wazoo to get it all fixed! (But, as a result, he's PERMANENTLY UNLICENSED NOW. ) 😅 Sorry to burden you & yer fans with all that, but I'm announcing it to the WORLD!) 😮 Anyway... GOOD JOB, BLUE! 👍 👌

Thanks you!! Sounds like you had a terrible experience with the dentist. Sorry to hear about that. Glad he's not in biz anymore! The Patreon will still be there when things settle down for ya :)

You are presuming that everyone has the same capacity to visualise - and that is an error on your part: that is analogous to assuming that everyone has the same capacity to be good at learning a language, or good at maths, or has a capacity or proclivity for learning about other subjects and learning in certain ways. I have tremendous difficulty picturing / visualizing the pentatonic (and most other patterns / 'shapes' on the guitar neck), and have been working on it for years - literally. While I am making progress, it has been very, very slow, and I know other people who naturally absorb this kind of information because they absorb visual information quickly. Conversely, I have always learned languages very quickly, and know others who do not have that capacity. I think you would do well to not make these kinds of assumptions - they are not useful, and reflect only one way of teaching.

Have to admit I was totally confused by your video so I wandered over to your website and took a look at the spread sheet, makes more sense now. Am I correct that once you get to the D string, the next major which would be on the B will be 3 frets up not two do to the B string tuning?
