I remember when Jimi said some Strats won't intonate And I thought , perhaps ? But since that magazine read I have reset 5 strat bridges back further So that they would intonate Filled the original holes and set it back a smidgeon to a smidgeon and a half further That is after removing the useless springs on the low E and the G string bridge saddles And it still won't intonate

I like when top E string is like 3-4 cents flat fretted at the 12th ..BUT.. it's 3-4 cents sharp fretted at the 3rd.. so you know it's dead nuts at the 5th and 7th...or like daddy always says, "Good enough for the girls we go with son!" Lol

Intonation is generally not an issue with the guitar - it is a setup issue. I have rarely come across a guitar that could just NOT be intonated. Certainly sometimes they don't come out of the box properly setup or intonated, but that is typically on the lower end of things. Literally every Schecter I have bought new is setup really well out of the box and the intonation is typically spot on. Setup and intonation should be something every guitarist learns how to do - it is straight forward and there are tons of tutorials on KZbin to teach you. It will save you money if you don't need to pay someone else to do it - and I do guitar tech work as a side gig!

I loved my first electric. It was an SG copy body with some cheap strat style neck but it would not stay in tune. I borrowed some money from my parents & bought a Les Paul style guitar. I was 17 at the time & I still have it. I'm 52 now. This guitar is just an absolute freak. It has T Top pickups from an older Les Paul but also has insane sustain. I got lucky

You hit the nail on the head! Intonation is one of the most important things on a guitar. I have had acoustic guitars that had bad intonation and I wasn't even sure how to fix it. Another thing I always wondered about is where do you start with the intonation? What I mean is do you start with the high E and set it at 24 and 3/4 and go from there or do you go to the low E and set it and go from there? If you follow me. 🧐 This was a great video for the fact that it had great information and you're playing was really good I can tell you like this guitar. You got me thinking hard about one of these AIO Les Paul guitars! I like flashy guitars too most of my guitars are pointy BC Rich guitars Dean Razorback & Stealth guitars. I like cool graphics And I really like the abalone, It looks kick ass on the binding. That is a great guitar for under $500!!!!!♥️ But yeah everything you said was right on point Thanks again Max and I'll see you on the next video. Btw my bass player in my band was asking me if I ever heard of the band Hellion? And I said yes and I know a couple of the songs from the '80s. I appreciate and respect the amount of effort they put into intonating and fine tuning the guitar before shipping it out. I also find intonation to be critical for superior sound quality and playability. However all the hard work they put into fine tuning their guitars at the factory will eventually fly out the window when a new owner decides to change the strings, change guage, adjust the action or truss rod. It'll never be the same unless we have a mr Jinn in our pocket to intonate the guitar every time we change something. Dont get me wrong, I respect the extra effort that goes into making sure there guitars are perfect tuned before being sent out.

I have a pair of Fireflies (Guitar and Baritone) and a Fender Squire Tele that showed up with mediocre setups.I also have a Schecter Custom C-5 bass I have been playing for 15+ years and Ibanez Artcore AFB-140 bass I've been playing for 10+ years which also needed intonation work. Very happy that I found out about intonation through you, Ted Woodford, Guitar Geek, and a few other guitar channels I watch. Learned how to do setups myself through videos here on KZbin and now all my instruments are *perfect*. Sadly, in the process I found out the bridge on my acoustic Alvarez bass is lifting off the sound board - that is something I'm going to take to a Luthier to have repaired.

@@LibertyDIY First I noticed a super high action (Unplayable after the 10th fret, and I'm used to high bass actions) after a well needed restringing. I was looking at sanding down the saddle after adjusting the truss rod to its limit. Then I looked closer and noticed 1/32 to 1/16 of air gap under the back side of the bridge. Sadly this bass sat for a long time without being played and I didn't know/have the forethought to downtune it. Also, the guitar shop I bought it from had it hanging on the wall for 4-5 years (Unbeknownst to me) before I bought it.

Edited: You asked what was the worst itonated guitar it was a Squire I had from the 90's best intonated guitart I bought off the shelf was late model Gibson that came Pleck'd from the factory. It was really amazing and how low I could get my action without buzzing I had to raise it becaue it was too low. Hell I couldn't even get my fingers on the strings.

You asked for it - I recently tried a used Gretsch Guitars G2210 Solid Body Electric Guitar (because of unusual pickups and vintage color). They have since upgraded this model with a $100 price increase that includes Inconel Pickups and a bone nut. I hope they corrected the intonation issue - bridge location on the solid body on the earlier model is just a little off. Because it uses a wrap around bridge instead of a traditional Tune-o-Matic bridge and tail piece the intonation is set by adjusting only a single screw (two total) at the end of the bridge. There are no individual saddle adjustments on the inexpensive bridge. So you adjust the screw by the low E to set intonation hoping the A and D strings are intonated properly. And you adjust the screw by the high E to set intonation hoping the high B and G string are intonated properly. The saddle that is part of the bridge is supposed to be designed for this method of intonating the strings. But because the bridge is mounted slightly off the screws are just not long enough (have micro allen heads to at least make it easier to adjust them). But I went to the hardware store and they had slightly longer stainless steel screws (an upgrade) with the allen heads and now I am still slowly trying to get it set - tuning string, adjusting screw, re-tuning string pitch then checking for intonation at the 12th fret. As I typed earlier above I hope someone at fender/Gretsch works with Quality at the manufacturing plant in Asia somewhere to at least have corrected this issue on the upgraded models. And a related issue is that these have a set net and the bridge that has to be lowered to low to get good action of a les Paul style guitar because the cavity on the body was not deep enough by a mm or 2 mms or the thickness of the guitar neck where it mounts to the solid body was too thick by a mm or 2 mms. Thankfully because of the wrap around bridge volume is not impacted as it would be on a true tune-o-matic bridge and tail piece (it would impact the bend angle of the strings (shallow angle) between the two pieces if bridge has to be lowered next to the body within a mm) One would think after they made one or two they would check action carefully and make necessary corrections to their jigs and fixtures that cut the body and neck before making a run of 500 or more and shipping them to their vendors warehouses. and correct the drilling location of screws on saddle for the bridge. One would think Fender/Gretsch would catch this and have them shipped back!

I bought the Wolf 335 iteration about 4 years ago. AIO did a fantastic setup based on my specifications. Upon receiving it, everything was perfection. The folks at AIO are first class and I never would have tried them, much less had never even heard of them, until I saw you review one back then. One more extremely important point to consider when setting the intonation on any electric guitar, which is almost always overlooked, yet impacts the guitar's overall intonation greatly is PICKUP HEIGHT. If a pickup is too close to the strings, it's magnetic pole pieces will pull on the strings in such a manner that anomalous strobe tuner readings will result when using a clip on tuner, strobe spectrum display tuner, or stomp box / in line plug in type tuner. Whenever you have the proper amount of "relief" (back bow) in your guitar's neck, yet the individual notes appear to bounce back and forth from sharp to flat to sharp again as you check each individual fret position going up the neck, that will be a clear indicator that your pickups are having a little fun with you. Don't pull your hair out (mostly because the older you get, the harder it is to re-grow it), but mainly because you just simply need to back those pickups away from your strings so they aren't being quite as magnetically affected. You'll be amazed at how easily your guitar will now be to intonate.

No guitar has perfect but we try to get it as close as we can. That’s why Steve Vai has frets the are compensated. It’s pretty interesting if you check out his guitar video. Some people tune their guitars to split the difference like James Taylor. Tim Pierce actually tuned his guitar specialty to be perfect around fifth fret to get the Micheal Jackson black or white riff sport on for the record. It’s why some people say the guitar is an imperfect instrument.

My secret weapon is a Telecaster. It has a longer scale length than an LP-style, stays in tune forever, and the intonation is excellent all the way up and down the frets, and it’s not really affected by how hard I push on the strings. This is impressive considering that it uses the old-fashioned barrel-style saddles. All other guitars sound out of tune to me.

Most guitars, especially anything coming out of Asia, are going to need a set up job to get proper intonation. It's not just the bridge saddles that need adjusting, it's the nut. The action at the nut is always too high and all of the notes at the first fret are sharp. Also, I've found that many Epiphone guitars simply cannot be intonated properly. The bridge is not far back enough to get the 12th fret octaves in tune.

I bought 2 of these model guitars around 8 years ago when they were called WOLF 🐺. Same place. I believe made in Korea by World Instrument Co who makes ESP LTD if not mistaken. Really nice guitars with black ebony Fretboards. Pickups are a bit microphonic for my taste, but an easy swap. What bridges are used on these ? Could you tell me the maker of the Pots, and if they should be replaced ? Would you change the Bridge and Tailpiece ? Thank You ! I just got a Peterson Strobe Tuner HD to tackle intonation so this is nice. ✌️

The worst intonation I ever saw was on a brand new guitar where it was about a quarter-step out of tune by the THIRD fret. Took it to my guitar tech and turns out the neck had to be shimmed. And this was not a super cheap guitar - around six or seven hundred dollars from a fairly well known brand.

I have a question about AIO guitars. I have 4 or 5 of them. In particular, I have 2 neck through Tele models. They later came out with a Tele with a humbucker in the neck position and I had to have it although I already had a Tele with single coils. Now the older Tele with single coil pickups is a Wolf and has paw print inlays on the neck. A nice touch in my opinion. The newer Tele with the humbucker in the neck is a AIO but also has paw print inlays on the neck although nowhere does it reference a wolf in any way. So my question is why does the AIO have paw print inlays?

An Ibanez JS700. It was so bad I sold it. Could not be corrected without modification and you just don’t plug and drill a Joe Satriani model. The guy I sold it to was a cowboy chord only player, so it was fine for him.

Instead of telling people to find someone that knows how to check the intonation, why not just tell them how to check the intonation. 😁Get a tuner, hit the 12th fret harmonic, then hit the open note, then hit the fretted 12th fret note. Those three should be the same. If the open note and the harmonic note are the same, but the fretted note is sharp, either loosen up that death grip you have on the neck or lower the action. If the open note is sharp compared to the harmonic, the string is too long, so adjust the saddle towards the nut. If the open note is flat compared to the harmonic, the string is too short, so adjust the saddle away from the nut. You could make a 15 minute video demonstrating that.

The worst intonation I ever had was when I knew nothing about scale length and tried to turn my squire strat into a "bowed guitar" by placing an arched piece of wood in front of the bridge... it also made the action terrible.

FYI, a guitar's intonation is GREATLY Affected by string(s) age/condition. If your guitar sounds like it's out of intonation and the strings are old, then its time for a new set of strings. One of the factors that determines a strings intonation is the string's overall diameter. Corrosion, gunk and even fret wear all contribute to poor intonation. The very first step to checking your guitar's intonation is installing a brand new set of strings. Also, if you find its only one string that is out of intonation, it is probably the string you are playing most often! I'm kind of surprised MAX didn't mention this important detail concerning intonation!
